Tom Ford Boys & Girls Lip Color Sheer ($36.00 for 0.07 oz.) just released with 25 shades. They are “clutch-sized,” which is code for miniature, though they are actually a better value (from a price per ounce perspective) than the brand’s full-sized offerings. The collection itself also features 25 shades in the Ultra-Rich formula, which I’ll share shortly!

Also, a big thank you to Beautylish for supporting Temptalia’s endeavor to swatch all the things and sending one of each shade for swatching. 🙂

First Impressions

The formula is supposed to have a “semi-sheer effect” that can be worn alone or layered. They are sheer to semi-sheer with a few with more medium and/or buildable coverage. The consistency was lightweight, emollient but not too slippery for the most part, and comfortable to wear. Swatching 50 lipsticks back-to-back is no small feat and really makes it glaringly obvious how comfortable a formula is (or isn’t) and my lips are no worse for the wear today. I don’t imagine that these will have stellar wear–two to three hours based on preliminary testing. They are vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

I bought TF Theo when it launched two years ago because the color was so beautiful, but I’ve hardly worn it because the formula is really drying for me (and I wear liquid mattes and MAC Retro Mattes no problem!). So it would take an awful lot for me to consider getting another Lips and Boys lipstick. These colors are all… let’s say uninteresting to me, and I would imagine very dupeable at a lower price point for someone who did want sheer, pale frosts and dense shimmers, or semi-sheer reds and plums. Didn’t MAC do basically this entire launch a while back? I’m mildly interested that Tom Ford continues to express such an appreciation for frosts, but honestly I think this collection is going to be a hard pass for most.

Yes- there really is nothing here that i don’t see being replicated well and ad infinitum at a significantly lower price. I can have my preschoolers make super cute specialty name labels if that’s what catches your fancy!

Lena and Isamaya might be interesting as toppers for a full-coverage formula. Ingrid is pretty.
For the price, I can’t see myself purchasing any from the sheers collection.
Kudos to Beautylish for providing you with every color; that’s awesome! (Can’t wait for their 2018 Lucky Bag!)

Nico looks amazing. I really want one of those red-brown/green duochrome lip colors and this one might be it. MAC’s On and On got such a bad rating…

I cannot believe that you were able to try so many colors in a row. I often envy your job, but today was a daunting task! Even Tom Ford would be tough to swipe on and take off over and over 50 x. Thank you for doing this with the entire line. Your swatches and opinions are the best!

My honest opinion? These all look awful. Barely any color pay off, way too sheer, boring… nope. Not good TF. I feel when the boys first started, everything was good but now it’s gone downhill.

So this is what it’s come to. Miniature is now “clutch-sized” and costs $36. Nope. I work waaaay too hard for my money. Thank you Christine, you are a trooper! I appreciate your reviews, if only so that this proletariat may be shocked by the Emperor. Louboutin, I’m looking at you, too. I would get a full sized McGrath over these any day of the week, since I think it is not particularly hard to get a decent sheer formula lipstick. Mattes are the true test, and what I would shell out the extra dollar for.
