MAC x Nicki Minaj Collection
MAC x Nicki Minaj Collection

MAC x Nicki Minaj Collection features two lipsticks that were created by Nicki Minaj along with 18 lipsticks (a mix of repromotes, permanent shades, and new, limited edition shades), six lipglosses (mix of new and permanent), and eight lip liners (from the permanent collection) to round out a collection of “bare, brazen basics.” It launches in-stores at select locations and online on the 21st. All of the products I have are swatched below but for the full list of shades, read this post.

I still can’t get past Too Faced Liquid Lipstick Color Granny Panty. It’s a cute color but I refuse to buy it. like who the heck wants to wear that.

“Oh girl that lipstick color is too cute, what’s the name of that?”
Me: “Granny Panty.”
“. . . . .oh”

Yea no thanks!

I know, Nancy. These sorts of names and the drug and violence related names really annoy me because they’re not cute or funny or clever. And you have to wonder where it will stop….a lipstick named “Turd” or a UD eyeshadow called “Gang Bang” (or does that already exist?)

Seraphine Avatar

Don’t give them any ideas…LOL!!!!

The color of the product is the most important thing, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend my money a product with a disgusting name, just out of conscience.

Sometimes a name can even be part of the buying decision, even though that doesn’t really make sense in reality. For example, I just HAD to own Urban Decay’s lipstick called 1993 because it brought me back to one of my favorite time periods of my life, when I wore colors exactly like that.

And then there’s my favorite Colourpop Ultra Satin shade name. It’s not gross like Roach or Derriere, but it’s a little embarrassing to have to say “Dopey” when someone asks what I’m wearing. I like to think it refers to one of the Seven Dwarfs, although they don’t have lipsticks named Happy, Sneezy, Sleepy, Grumpy, Bashful, or Doc. (Though, that might make a very cute 7-piece set!)

Exactly. Backdoor by another name. I did have a flashback chuckle about Are You Being Served? and the London Derrière. (Londonderry Air). Nothing like Brit comedy.

I’ve never been a fan of the nude lip look. I know many will disagree with me but I honestly think everyone looks better with a bit of colour on their lips, a bit of brightness. It’s like Nancy T said the other say about looking sick and not in a good way. I think a nude lip makes people look like they’re not feeling their best (in literature, the cliche often used to describe someone who’s about to faint or has heard bad news is “the colour drained from her lips”)

Nicki is a rapper and she’s famous for her ass. Have you seen the new Rake It Up music video or even listened to any of her music? I’m not quite sure what you expected out of the names… personally, I think they’re all hilarious! I definitely want to grab myself an Age/Sex/Location ?

AlohaDreamKitchen Avatar

Ah girls, you’re so funny! And I totally agree regarding the names. Wish I didn’t read about the French meaning but good to know 🙂
Christine, thank you very much for being so prompt. You’re a wallet saver as always. It would have been quite owerwhelming without your insights!
Could anyone please suggest a dupe for Shy Girl or Ravishing lippie that is not Cremesheen? I’m allergic to cremesheens but love those understated colors on me so much.

MoMerrell Avatar

Half o these will not look right on my dark skin and the darker colors are just bleh and dupable. I do like the names though; Age/Sex/Location ha…

I’m a bit surprised at how many *very* light, even pale many of these nudes are. Wasn’t expecting that.
I do see 3, maybe 4, that I’m going for! Nicki’s Nude, Nude Lipglass, Among The Fireflies and Mmmm are my favorites.
BUT. I have a serious issue with some of the names of others that seem to overly sexualize WoC. A Girl’s Got Needs? Easy Babe? And the worst offender: Derriere. Basically, a lipstick called A$$!

CL Avatar

Well, they’re the same ones who thought it was okay to use “bitch” in the name of a recent palette. I hope those end up in a landfill, or sold for a buck a piece somewhere.

What about ‘Orgasm’? “Super Orgasm”? “Better Than Sex”? “Underage Red”? “Deep Throat”? “Asphyxia” to name just a few?

markiebamboo Avatar

Are they deliberately trying to shoot themselves in the foot? None of this is remotely exciting. May as well pick up a strawberry, rub it on your lips and call it a day. At least you can eat the strawberry after.

Valerie Avatar

Lipstick name “Derriere”, in brown color. These days, you can be sexy only if you wear dirty attitude and lipstick!

Other colors are pretty lovely though!

Deborah Avatar

Names of cosmetics don’t bother me in the least. Wondering what some think of ‘Orgasm’? “Super Orgasm”? “Better Than Sex”? “Underage Red”? “Deep Throat”? “Asphyxia”? to name just a few.

I was waiting for these swatches because in Germany we can already buy this collection. It came out the first of September I think. And absolutely no swatches in the internet. So I did not know which lipsticks to buy (I did not want to try all the lipsticks in store).

janine Avatar

I’m pleased with what I ordered earlier today Pinkprint and those 2 glosses. I own creme d nude and it’s lovely. Nudes are very dependent on my skin tone some I loved in the spring I couldn’t wear in summer. The darker ones are great for fall.

M Avatar

This is underwhelming, tbh. Most of these look like generic nudes that myriad other brands already produce… not really anything special in finish or undertone to make these worth getting excited about, IMO.

In the tube, Japanese Maple looked promising but the actual swatch is SO sheer and disappointing, the colored shimmer flecks barely register…

18thCenturyFox Avatar

I got the two SE ones and I think they’re lovely. This is a Nicki Minaj collection, names any less risqué would be seriously dissapointing. Can you imagine if she had her actual druthers on naming these items? *Clutching pearls*

Your poor lippie!

Jen Avatar

Lots of super light shades. I’m still not getting why Nicki would allow her 4 lip colors to be combined with a collection that has nothing to really do with her? Did Mac need her to sell this or the other way around or was it MAC thinking Nicki’s nudes are hard to wear for many, so they combined it with some new, permanent, and repromo’d nudes so more people would have options?

Anyhow despite that I early access ordered “Mmmmmm” “Age/Sex/Location” and “Baby’s Alright.” I feel like those three will be very popular, especially “Baby’s Alright.”

Kayla K Avatar

I think the combo was because MAC needed her name to sell this collection. Quite a few of these are existing permanent shades or repromotes, and everyone already knows MAC makes lipsticks (including nude shades), so you would think that people would’ve already purchased them if they wanted them, no? But I guess the big guys sitting in offices at MAC were like “nudes are really trendy right now, what can we do to get people to buy our nude lipsticks en masse?!” “Well, hey, POC keep complaining that it’s hard to find a good nude, so what if we partner with a really famous WOC and let her make a few shades and then just take the rest of our nude shades and throw them at people?” “Sounds brilliant!”

Names do not bother me, finding great yellow brown and peachy brown lipsticks, however, is becoming increasingly difficult. For redheads with hazel brown or brown eyes, for whom these colors are the most flattering, this collection is a long time coming. I realize that these colors do not look good on all complexions, but they did a good job of mixing in some pinky browns, pinky nudes, and plain pink. So, there seems to be something for everyone, and some difficult to find colors for others. I own MAC lip pencils in Spice, Hover, Stripdown and Boldly Bare. . So it seems that I am adequately equipped for this collection. I t would be great to see some blushes and eyeshadows to compliment this collection. I am looking forward to trying : A girl’s got needs, Derriere, Easy Babe, and possibly Gossimer Wing for a little sparkle. I hope they will be in department stores to swatch. Although MAC’s website has a very generous return poicy, and I am out of my favorite liner, Dipdown in the pot. So a shopping trip for fall colors is in my future. Hope everyone finds something that flatters them in this collection! I may buy doubles of Derriere!! Not for the name, but for the unique color that reminds me of a long discontinued sheer lipsitck of Nars called Corinthe. A Nars SA told me it was her redhead color, just before it got discontinued!!!

Brian Avatar

A name I roll my eyes at wont stop me from buying if I like the color and think I will get use out of it. I also appreciate that there are some harder to find tones in this collection. I have to say scrolling through the comments I’m surprised to find such strong negative opinions over the name derriere and then the same people proceed to type out much worse and talk about dirty jokes they are amused by.

Nicole Avatar

How come no one is stating the obvious! Why are none of these colors swatched on anyone of color???? Nude for who? You’d think being as Nicki is a person of color she would help to highlight the lack of make -up especially in the nude category or foundation category for those who have brown skin, and while collobrarating with anyone would address said issue and at minimum swatch someone with brown skin. Gag. I’ll save my money for that reason alone.

kellly Avatar

They look really pretty in the photo but looking at the swatches, I don’t think any of the colors would look good on me. They all seem light and the dark ones seem to orange-y brown for me.

Sarah Avatar

Easy Babe looks like kind of lip color I’ve been looking for recently — light-medium brown without rosy undertones

Not a huge fan of Mac’s formula (tugs at lips during application, patchy), but I’ll at least check this one out in store

Anna Avatar

In Europe we can buy the collection since 1th of September. I bought only one shade (playing koi) bc I have so many nude lipsticks from the permanent line. (I am NC20 -25). In my opinion almost every shade has a very close dupe in the permanent line.
