Sephora Fairytale & My Boyfriend's Jeans Contour Eye Pencil Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Sephora Fairytale Contour Eye Pencil
Sephora Fairytale Contour Eye Pencil ($9.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “golden green.” It’s a blue-teal with green and gold micro-shimmer. This shade was only semi-opaque when applied, and even layering by doing multiple passes didn’t quite intensify it to really true-to-pencil color. I wouldn’t recommend wearing it on the water line if you have sensitive eyes due to the amount of shimmer in it (and I don’t think it’s touted as water line safe). It lasted well for nine hours on me (not the 12 hours claimed), and by the twelfth hour, it was thinner than it was when I had initially applied but I didn’t see smudging or a lot in the corners of my eyes. Make Up For Ever #52L doesn’t have the golden shimmer. Urban Decay Junkie seems a bit darker. MAC Undercurrent is also darker. See comparison swatches.
My Boyfriend’s Jeans Contour Eye Pencil ($9.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as an “electric blue.” It’s a bold, brightened blue with violet shimmer–it almost looks more like a cobalt blue, but it’s very rich. I don’t have anything quite like this in my stash. This was mostly opaque in a single pass, and it was buildable to full color with two passes. I’ve worn this a few times since getting it, and it wears well on me for nine hours but does start to look thinner after that (but no smudging). Urban Decay Chaos is lighter. NARS Rue Saint-Honore is much darker. See comparison swatches.
I did want to mention that of the five shades I bought, three of them had the tips half-way broken when I received them. The first one I thought maybe was my fault (taking the cap off too quickly), but I was really careful with the rest, and I still had two more that were like it, so I’m not sure if there’s a quality control issue with respect to that or just bad luck.

I have 4 of these Sephora pencils now (though neither of these colours) and I cannot get over how good they are. They’re a bit more expensive in Canada (what else is new) but still really good value. They are several bucks less than my previous favourite good value pencils by GOSH. And the colours are out of this world gorgeous (I have Surfer Babe, Tango Night, Driving in Malaysia and Galaxy Girl; all have glitter but it’s such pretty glitter and keeps the pencils from looking too “heavy”)
Nice! So glad you’re really loving these – and so funny that they’re cheaper than GOSH!
Did any of yours have broken tips, by chance?
No, they were all perfectly pristine. Did you get yours in the mail? I wonder if maybe they melted or something. I got mine in-store and, as I say, all of them were perfect. I do find they are quite soft though and I think they’re going to need more frequent sharpening than other pencils.
I did, but they didn’t seem melted – same softness as they are now as when I received them!
I love these too and mine weren’t broken either, maybe you had a bad batch ? I have the most gorgeous lilac/pink/violet color, will check out the name 🙂 Thanks for everything you do Christine !
My Boyfriend’s Jeans look gorgeous! I actually just picked up Sephora’s Nano Liner in Lagoon because I wanted a blue liner for summer…now I want MBJ too! Thanks for the swatch Christine.
No prob, Eileenie!
ooooh Pretty!!
Christine – my Diving in Malaysia had a broken point. I purchased that in store.
Thank you for sharing, Kristin!
It’s a bit strange, but I’ve been really drawn to blues lately, so I’ll have to check these out, especially Fairy Tale.
Wowza, those swatches look pretty convincing to me! Look at the pigmentation.
I just had a makeover and the artist put Fairytale on me. It was like one of those Disney moments with little birds surrounding you and chirping and the skies opening up. What a great color! I bought it, of course, and I have worn it a few more times and it is the ONLY liner I have ever worn that Did. Not. Move. Usually my liner smudges in the outer corners of my eyes and makes it look like I’m crying liner – not this one. Sold. I’ll buy more colors. But Fairytale is beautiful on (for reference I’m pale, red hair, light brown eyes).
YAYYYY!
I really have been impressed with the Sephora Collection liners lately!
(Cue high pitched scream) ITS ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE JUNKIE! IT’S ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE JUNKIE! I LOVE my Junkie pencil!!!! I got from their Electric eyeliner mini-set and I loooove it so much. Someone remind me: Is Junkie part of the permanent pencil line? I probably won’t buy it if it is, because now I have a near-perfect dupe ;w; Thank you, Christine!!!!!
Junkie is part of the perm range 🙂
Christine, I think all these makeup companies keep making more and more teal eyeliners just for you!
LOL!
I scrolled right down to the swatches and said to myself “Hm these are like UD’s Junkie and Chaos except a bit lighter/darker” then I saw that you said the same thing in the review! Your review methods are rubbing off on me 🙂
my boyfriends jeans pencil is awesome! i actually use it to draw on my brows to match my blue hair and it lasts all day with no primer,i thought it was the same as nyc moody blues but its not,lol
What color are your brows naturally? Mine are pretty much straight up black and I’ve tried just about everything to be able to have brighter colors show up. I have lavender and some pastel pink bangs, so obviously, black brows are pretty harsh in contrast!
Talk about timing. I recently discovered these WONDERFUL items at Sephora two weeks ago. I’m hooked. I bought three and I want all of them. The black pencil I have stays on my waterline. Not for 12 hours but for about 8 or 9, which is BIG NEWS for me because the entire eye is slick and no make up stays on there. I feel the quality of these pencils rival Urban Decay plus they are half the cost. I’m even eyeing the chubby pencils for eyeshadows. The colors are so vibrant and they stand out on my brown skin tone. I am a fan!
Nikki, the chubby shadow pencils are outstanding. I bought quite a few of the UD 24/7 shadow pencils when they first came out and the problem with them is they set way too fast so you cannot blend them at all. The Sephora ones remain blendable for a while after you apply them but they do set well and don’t crease (and if you want to be doubly sure, just put a bit of primer underneath). I love Sephora’s jumbo liners; it was my satisfaction with them that compelled me to try these skinny liners.
I’ll definitely check this out for a waterline pencil. Nothing stays on mine for long. Could Sephora Contour finally be the answer? Thanks! And, I agree with Mariella. The chubby pencils are terrific.
love the Fairytale one!!
Love My Boyfriend’s Jeans. I was looking at these in Sephora, but I couldn’t decide on a color.
My Boyfriend’s Jeans is stunning! I’m slightly terrified of bright blues like that, but I may have to make it work!
I have the one in Banana Split and it is just awesome. Love adding a yellow liner to my look especially when I wear yellow.
Ooooh, both of these make me happy!! I think I will pick them up this weekend! Thanks to the previous poster who left feedback about the sephora pencils working well I her water line, I’ve tried a variety of pencils, gel liners and the like, and I haven’t had much luck with anything staying in my water line….I will def try the black one in my water line and see! Thanks for the review, Christine!
Hi Christine, how does My Boyfriend’s Jeans compare with UD Deviant and TT Glamorous Thief?
Purpler than both, closer to Glamorous Thief than Deviant, though!
Do you have any looks that feature the teal liner? I’d love to see how it looks on you. In addition, you make some of the most beautiful looks I’ve ever seen. Just thought you should know. 🙂
Thank you, Jenny! I don’t really post… looks? any more, because I don’t do many cohesive looks any more, lol! I know I’ve worn it in photos for swatching, but I can’t remember something specific.
