Round-up: MAC The Matte Lip Collection Overview & Thoughts

MAC The Matte Lip Collection

MAC The Matte Lip Collection is supposed to launch online on May 28th and hit stores and counters on June 11th. According to MAC, all of the new/rereleased shades are being added to the permanent line. Six of the shades are Retro Matte, and the rest are Matte. Retro Mattes have a much drier, thinner, and stiffer formula, which makes them harder to apply directly from the tube, and they tend to be rather drying (in my experience, of course). Mattes have a heavier consistency that’s a little thicker and creamier, so they tend to be more forgiving and apply more evenly, though they typically don’t wear quite as long as Retro Mattes, they are often not as drying either. My personal favorites were Velvet Teddy (A-), Matte Royal (B+), and Men Love Mystery (B+).

We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Gosh, these look so amazing, I bet they stay on for like…forever!!! I so wish my lips wouldn’t decide to go all sahara desert on me everytime I so much as look at a matt lipstick 😀

Either way, I was hoping, Christine, that maybe you could recommend some coral lipsticks for me. I’m looking for something like in this picture http://taylorpictures.net/displayimage.php?album=3225&pid=179456#top_display_media

I’m really sorry if I’m bothering you with that, it’s just so that I don’t know many good lipsticks myself and I trust you, a random person on the internet, more than I trust these sales ladies ….there’s history there 😉

A kiss on my list for: Men Love Mystery, Whirl, Instigator, Stone! Possibly D For Danger, too. Even though I’ve always wanted Ruby Woo, I know I already have some truly great reds in Maria Moretti, Russian Red, Damn Glamorous, also a Nars Cruella mini.

I think I “need” Men Love Mystery. I love the Matte Royal and it looks amazing on you, I just don’t think I’d actually wear it if I bought it. I’m considering Heroine and Pink Pigeon as well. Guess I need to ask – Do I really need more pink lipsticks? (Kind of a rhetorical question bc the answer always ends up being “yes” – LOL)

They look good for the most part, but what’s up with matte not actually meaning matte these days? A lot of those look like they’ve got at least a little sheen. I mean, I get that they’re more moisturizing, but let a girl choose! We’ve all got lip balm!

All that aside, thank you so much for reviewing all of these shades! With Mac being so hit-and-mostly-miss these days, having your reviews to refer to means a lot, especially with more unique colors.

Perhaps it’s because the matte finish you get with a liquid lipstick has changed the idea of matte? Most regular matte lipsticks aren’t so flat that they look like most matte liquid lipsticks. MAC Retro Mattes are closest in a solid form, but their regular matte range has always been like this – e.g. Please Me, Velvet Teddy, etc. have been around for maybe a decade or longer! I think a lot of them look pretty matte, especially when you’re not viewing them super up-close (see full face photos). These aren’t moisturizing, though! About half are a little drying, actually 🙁

My pleasure! xo

I can see some nice shades there! Stone and Persistence look very beautiful! I’m glad MAC decided to make this matte collection permanent. I would have loved if they would have made the matte lip collection from a few months ago (pander me, fashion revival…) permanent, too.

Well done again! *clapping* Are you ready for another massive release? 😉 50-200 products max in the most likely LE game? Haha! 🙂

It may creep silently, but its existence can be felt can be felt like an anvil to the head! Keeping my fingers crossed for you that only a few companies do it! 😉 lol
