Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm Review, Photos, Swatches
Revlon Whimsical (115) ColorBurst Lacquer Balm
Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm ($8.99 for 0.095 oz.) is a newer lip color release from Revlon. I picked up a couple of shades from my local drugstore a few weeks ago, but it seems these are permanent as they’re available online. There are ten shades in total. The formula is supposed to have “high shine with balm-like moisture.” They are twist-up jumbo-sized pencils, so no sharpening is required. Though they seemed almost semi-sheer when swatched on the skin, they’re actually quite pigmented on the lips. They have a moderate level of shine, and they feel like a lighter-weight lip balm. I found both shades I tried to be somewhat hydrating–not quite as hydrating as the best lip balm but comfortable to wear. They had a mint scent and slight mint flavor.
Whimsical (115) ColorBurst Lacquer Balm ($8.99 for 0.095 oz.) is a medium-dark, subtly cool-toned pink with a luminous shine. It had semi-opaque color coverage and was mostly even. It wore well for four hours. Charlotte Tilbury Velvet Underground (P) is more matte. MAC Pleasure Bomb (LE, $15.00) is matte, redder, brighter. Guerlain Illusion (660) (LE, $35.00) is darker. Revlon Sorbet (P, $7.49) is similar. MAC Lickable (P, $15.00) is slightly pinker. See comparison swatches.
Vivacious (120) ColorBurst Lacquer Balm ($8.99 for 0.095 oz.) is a pinky-red with subtle warm undertones. This one had a less glossy/balm-like finish and more of a satin finish. It was very nearly opaque on lips, though, and it lasted for almost five hours. Charlotte Tilbury Velvet Underground (P) is cooler-toned. Tom Ford Beauty Aphrodisiac (LE, $49.00) is slightly pinker. MAC Impassioned (P, $15.00) is a touch brighter, more matte. Guerlain Gigi (P, $49.50) is similar. Guerlain Gourmandise (P, $49.50) is warmer. See comparison swatches.

Both of these are so pretty on you. Going to try a few out myself. Thanks for the review!
Thanks, Camille! I’d love to hear what you think after you’ve had a chance to try ’em!
Wow! I gotta say, drugstore brands are really stepping it up– especially in the lip-color department! Revlon’s lip butters won me over, and now these look wonderful too! That second one is beautiful!
Vivacious is definitely a showstopper!
I love your hair in the photos! and omg Vivacious is so gorgeous! i have 2 of the original balm stains I need to pick these up!
Thanks, Barbie! 🙂
Great review! Whimsical looks a lot like Mac Purple Rite on me. It’s gorgeous!
Possible dupe then! 😀
Cute shirt!
Thanks, Clio!
I need them both in my life! Like right now!
I hope you can try them soon 🙂
You look beautiful in those pictures! I love your top and Whimsical looks great on you.
Thanks a lot, Agata! 🙂
Whimsical looks pretty similar to Guerlain Illusion in your swatch gallery comparison. I should seek it then 🙂
It’s a good option for something more affordable! 🙂
I’m a little surprised they released two colors so similar in an LE collection, but they are quite pretty. I didn’t get any of the lacquers, but I picked up two of the matte shades and LOVE THEM. I like them even more than the original formula, which I only used once or twice before giving away. Here’s to hoping they make it to the permanent line at some point.
These are permanent as far as I know! 🙂
Oh really? All the displays where I am stated they were LE. Maybe the LE was a test run, and now that they’ve sold well it’s been added to the premanent line up. (They better do that with the mattes, now!) 🙂
Interesting!! They’re available online, which is extremely unusual since LE drugstore stuff never seems to make it to online at all!
All of the displays that used to have them have long since been taken down in my local drugstores! There aren’t any available in sight and they’ve never been re-stocked since. Sad because I wanted to try the matte red.
The mattes are available online! 🙂 Locally, they JUST came out maybe two weeks ago max… maybe they displays are down as they’re being added to the actual display? I will try to confirm with Revlon (I don’t really have a contact at the brand, so I’m not sure I can get an official response).
Hey Erin,
Just to confirm, Revlon said both the ColorBurst Lacquer Balms AND Matte Balms are permanent – they are being added along the Balm Stains!

Yay! I’m always on the lookout for a good, lip-friendly matte shade. 🙂 This has definitely made my day. Thank you, Christine!
I think Veronica is referring to the recent Matte and Shine pencils like this that are LE out. Those plus these are awesome.
Both shades look gorgeous on you, Christine!
Thank you, MizLottie 🙂
Both look amazing on you. I really like both!
Thanks, Wendy!
Vivacious is beautiful on you. Also love the detailing of your top/dress.
Thanks, Shivani! 🙂
Oh my gosh Christine you look gorgeous! Vivacious looks amazing on you, but for me, your eye makeup stole the show. What are you wearing?
Clarins The Essentials! 🙂
I absolutely love Vivacious on you, Christine. You look like you’re all ready for Christmas day.
Thank you so much, Audrey!
Hope they release these in Australia. Revlon always seem to make great lip products.
I’m totally crossing my fingers for ya, Zaina!
Loved Vivacious. No l loved both the shade. You looking real pretty in that top and both shades look lovely on u!
Aww, thanks Vineetha!
The second one actually looks really pretty.
I was only interested in one colour of the entire balm range, Shamless, bought it, tried it, gave it a terrible review since I had such a terrible experience with it. 😡
Ohh no! 🙁
I was just thinking, ” i wonder what Christine is wearing on her eyes?” Then I realized it must be the Clarins essentials palette because that has what it has been every other time I’ve asked in the past couple of weeks. I think I just need to go check it out!
Haha! You are right 😀
I have Vivacious and love it! It’s such a perfect shade of fuchsia and it goes along with the name of my blog, so it was a no-brainer 🙂
Good call 🙂
Ooohhh you reviewed the 2 shades I own! ^^
These balms are very nice. Gorgeous colors too.
They have a thinner texture than the Revlon lip butters.
I was a bit worried about Whimsical cuz I heard some people complain of the shimmer texture, but I thought it looked great and wasn’t gritty-feeling on the lips.
The packaging is super nice too! I love how shiny and metallic it is. xD
I didn’t notice any grittiness either, An!
On a completely unrelated note – Oh my God Christine, I want whatever you’re wearing, even though I can only see the shoulders. Haha
LOL! I feel like George Washington in that top for some reason. It’s great for photos, since you can only see the very top, but the full thing is very OTT! I picked it up from Forever 21 maybe eight years ago!
Do you plan to review any of the matte balms, Christine?
I can’t remember if I have any of them!
How do these, formula wise compare to Tarte’s lipsurgance?
I don’t really have much experience with those!
Oooh, I like the sparkles in Whimsical, I need to pick that one up! I’ve bought one, in Ingenue, which is pretty subdued in color. Because the Matte one I picked up was a bit darker, Sultry.
They’re subtle but there! 🙂 How did you like the Matte one?
I’ve heard some reports of patchiness with other shades, but Sultry applied really easily and evenly and wore well on me!
Yay!!
Don’t you look pretty. Both lipsticks look great on you.
Thanks, Denise!
Oooo, Vivacious is pretty!
I wonder of the difference between the Lacquer Balm and the Kissable Balm Stain (since I love the latter and really don’t want it discontinued), and from the reviews I’ve read so far, the staining properties of the Kissable Balm Stain seems to be main difference. Do you find these leave a stain at all, Christine?
A little stain, but it’s not as much as I would expect a full-on lip stain would! Like Vivacious leaves a slight stain but Whimsical doesn’t leave much!
Thank you! 🙂
Gosh, thats soooo pretty!
Gorgeous shades!!!
Holy cow–you were NOT kidding when you said they really were pigmented once worn. When I saw the first swatch, I was thinking “finally! A sheer, shiny, non-staining version of the Balm Stains!”. But gawd are these bright! Not sure if I’ll be partaking but I must say they look absolutely stunning on you. Vivacious in particular 🙂
Yeah, these are pretty pigmented!!
These are definitely a lot nicer than I expected! I have tried some of the new matte balms & I really like them.
Perfect for Christmas !
The second one looks great! Revlon has been impressing me lately. Ahh I have too many bight pinks as it is though!!
I like their Tutti Frutti lip butter and the pigmentation of the Lovesick “Just Bitten” etc (these long names lol) and I’m really liking Vivacious here.
Both the shades are gorgeous on you Christine 🙂 would love to try these out
but they will take agessss to launch in India and by then all the excitement dies 🙁
still waiting for maybelline vivids you know
and every time i see you are comparing them with other shade i feel so sad 🙁 🙁
That picture of Whimsical drew me to this post!
What a pretty product. I can’t wait to pick this up for my holiday party!
I dont much like the one with the sparkle in it. It reminds me too much of frosty lipglosses/lipsticks, which I am not to fond of. The Vivacious looks beautiful though.
I so wanted to love this. I bought the Vivacious and the color was perfection. The problem was that it had absolutely no staying power. I had to reapply every hour or so.
