Rare Beauty True to Yourself Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
True to Myself
Rare Beauty True to Yourself Discovery Eyeshadow Palette ($29.00 for 0.15 oz.) includes three matte eyeshadows, three shimmer eyeshadows, and one pressed glitter. Two of the seven shades were nice to work with–the last two–but the rest were disappointing, considering how nice the holiday palettes were from the brand. The matte formula tended to be thinner and more powdery with sheerer coverage (by no means “rich”). I was also surprised that they didn’t release two variations as this was more light-leaning and a second, darker and richer option would have provided options for more skin tones.

PPermanent. $29.00.
Undeniable
Undeniable is a darker, purplish-mauve with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. While the texture was silky and finely-milled to the touch, it was moderately powdery and had light fallout. The pigmentation was more medium and didn’t build up well, though it was blendable. This shade stayed on well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Genuine
Genuine is a light, peachy coral with warmer, more orange-leaning undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which could be built up to medium pigmentation or semi-opaque coverage if applied over an eyeshadow primer. The texture was soft, smooth to the touch, but it was thinner and more firmly-pressed into the pan, which may have contributed to the sheerness. It lasted for seven hours before fading visibly.

Passionate
Passionate has a warmer, more coppery base with flecks of red and pink sparkle throughout. It had a drier, denser consistency that was harder to pick up with a dry brush and did not apply as evenly as one would want. I’d recommend using it with a fingertip or a dampened brush to get better results. It had semi-opaque color payoff that wore decently for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Accepting
Accepting has a transparent base chocked full of fine, peach glitter and small gold glitter. It had semi-opaque “coverage” from the sheer amount of glitter packed into the pan. The texture was just barely emollient, so the glitter didn’t adhere as well as it could have since the base lacked some slip and tackiness, though it had good distribution of the glitter particles.
This shade includes plastic (PET) glitter but is marketed as an eyeshadow palette and had no warning about it on the back of the palette (I didn’t receive the carton it came in as it was a press sample). There was fallout apparent after six hours of wear and decent migration over time (I used it as a cheek highlighter as I wasn’t comfortable using it as an eye product).

Loyal
Loyal is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was buildable to semi-sheer over bare skin and more medium coverage applied over primer. The consistency was soft, finely-milled, and blendable, but it was somewhat powdery and on the thinner side. It lasted nicely for seven hours before fading visibly.

Positive
Positive is a light, peachy coral with warmer, gold shimmer throughout. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was denser than the other shades in the palette but not too thick or too firmly-pressed into the pan. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Pure
Pure is a rich, molten gold with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was dense, lightly creamy but not overly thick or too stiff to work with, so using a dry brush worked well with this shade. It had opaque color payoff that stayed on well for eight hours before fading a bit.

From the preview swatches, I pretty much knew that this palette was subpar. Especially compared to those two beauties that Rare Beauty had previously come out with. This is a big disappointment. And *why* is the one biggest pan a pressed glitter??? Boo! Hiss!
I was going to buy this before I saw your dismal swatches. Glad I waited! I’ll get a ND mini palette instead during the Sephora Sale.
Yikes at those swatches. And the largest pan being PET glitter?! HARD PASS!
I came close to buying this right away, as in prior to seeing reviews. which I rarely do. I’m so glad I used my better judgment and waited. It’s so disappointing since the first 2 palettes really were pretty nice (I thought).
Very disappointing – the mattes are pretty horrible and the shimmers are marginally better. It’s interesting that the only dupes for the glitter shade are those from ColourPop – who has a major love affair with PET glitter….
I really like Positive but I won’t buy a palette for one shade, too bad it didn’t perform better.
I actually purchased this palette in the Sephora VIB sale:(. I loved the shades and thought the packaging was so chic. I’m so disappointed at the not-so-good reviews. I will wait until it arrives and perhaps will send it back for a refund! Wish me luck:). Thank you for your review, Christine – much appreciated!
If you like more buildable mattes, you may like it! Definitely use it with primer (assuming you try it!).
Thank you, Christine! Will do:) xo
First, why do brands use PET glitter in their eyeshadow palettes! Many are trying to use les plastic in everyday life and then the cosmetic companies hit us with plastic “eyeshadow”. It annoys me a lot, as you can tell. Sorry LOL
On a much happier note, I always get a big smile on when I manage to guess a dupe, a little game I play for myself. Today I managed to get a correct guess on MAC Paradisco being a dupe for Positive.
It’s not a color story I need but I do like the layout and the concept. Glad I didn’t buy based on your review. I love the mini palette with purple from the brand. :o)
PET (plastic) glitter in the middle? lol. No. No, thank you. Take your unnecessary plastic manufacturing and shove it way, waaaay up inside your butthole. (not sure that last comment will make it through the review process. but I’m so over plastic glitter in eye palettes. I know I’m not the only one)
