Diamond of the First Water

Pat McGrath Diamond of the First Water MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition six-pan palette that includes a new gel-powder formula in two shades, along with one matte eyeshadow, two shimmer eyeshadows, and one Astral eyeshadow. The eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and longer-wearing overall, and they were, generally, consistent with Pat McGrath’s eyeshadow formulations over the last few years.

Iconic Ingenue

Iconic Ingenue is a pale pink with strong, warm gold shimmer and undertones that had a more luminous sheen when applied to bare skin. The texture was finely-milled, lightly emollient but not too powdery nor too firmly-pressed into the pan. It lasted well for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Art of the Swoon

Art of the Swoon is a brighter, medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and finer pearl that gave it a more satin-to-pearl finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, though it had a gel-powder formula, so it had to be used with a denser brush or heavier-hand in order to pick up product evenly. The powder applied evenly and “melted” onto my skin. It stayed on nicely for nine hours before fading visibly.

Regency Blue

Regency Blue has a transparent base with finer, iridescent sparkle. It was described as a topper, so some translucency was expected. The consistency was lightly emollient, more finely-milled and seemed silkier than past Astral shades, though still domed and more baked in feel. It had medium to semi-opaque coverage that applied well to bare skin but had light fallout when used dry. This shade wore well for nine hours with minimal fallout over time.

Plum Regalia

Plum Regalia is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth, velvety, and dense without being too powdery nor too firmly-packed into the pan. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and blended out without difficulty. This shade showed signs of fading after nine hours of wear.

Duchess Divinity

Duchess Divinity is a medium plum with strong, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had an incredibly cream-like texture–finely-milled, smooth, but not overly thick–that yielded full color payoff. It stayed on well for 10 hours before creasing faintly.

Love Match

Love Match is a deep pinky-red with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was denser, firmer, and consistent with gel-powder formulations, but it required a heavier-hand and/or denser brush to pick up product (trying pushing against the shadow, rather than swirling). It had full color coverage that wore well for nine hours before fading.

This is an interesting color story , not sure it would work with my skin tone but great quality nonetheless.
I was surprised that “Regency Blue” swatched looks much less blue than in the pan…..
then realized the model Pat McGrath used is wearing the Blitz Blue permagel eye pencil smoked blended out to achieve the bluer effect.

Mandy Avatar

I wore this palette over the weekend and it was to die for! Same amazing quality and I love all the colors. Very happy with my purchase, since you know I just had to have the whole set lol. I guess I don’t see the problem with all the pinks, but for me, they are my go to neutral colors and I love the way pink makes my blue eyes pop!

Mandy Avatar

Pat McGrath is also on Rakuten! Almost everywhere I shop is, I just have to remind myself to log into their app first lol. And they have bonus days either double cash back (as Top Cash back may as well, I just heard of it today). But it’s great getting money back on things you were going to buy anyway! That’s also why I use PayPal and have a debit card for it, they pay 1% cash back for spending your own money!

Helene Avatar

This looks a lot better than I hoped it would. 😉
I’m often disappointed by PMG palettes, I know I’m in a small minority here, but I’m OK with that.
Anyway I didn’t want to like this palette, I really didn’t. I still miss the lovely dusty purple, the colour of the roses on the packaging, but apart from that I could see this palette work so well for me. Darn it!
I’m getting the heating sorted today, I’ll se after I get the bill if I can afford this palette. This is an expensive month, the electricity bill was scarily high and now the heating system! Oh, well, I need warmth and warm water more than an eyeshadow palette, and I’m glad I understand that. 🙂

Francesca Avatar

If only the satins/mattes were less pinky… Really, nowadays in every single palette released there are similar mattes shades. At the tenths iterations of them I can say stop heaping dupes on dupes, no matter how visually appealing the whole layout is or how wonderful are the other shimmers. Is a matter of limit wasting both products and money. Why not inserting istead a cool brown or greysh-taupe? Even if I am a warm toned complexion, I ended, amongst dozens of eyeshadows, having tons of reddish/pinkish neutral kind of mattes, but zero cooler hues.

Sandy Avatar

For some reason, this particular special shade works on my oily lids! It felt drier to me than the ones in the quad from a couple of Christmas’s ago. Those just muddied up on me in a few hours no matter the techniques I tried. Don’t have any of the DR palettes so was excited to pick this one up!
