Pat McGrath Opulence Collection Swatches (Updated!)
Pat McGrath Opulence Collection
Pat McGrath Opulence Collection includes three six-pan eyeshadow palettes along with specially packaged MatteTrance lipsticks (all shades are from the permanent range). I decided to go through and swatch the MatteTrances as it’s still a newer brand, so I felt it made sense to go through and check for consistency (and it was there, at least in terms of color, opacity, application, and feel).
Edited to add: Subliminal Dark Star swatches are now live!

Drop dead gorgeous packaging. But as beautiful as it is, there are no shades here I actually want…shocking, but true! Money saved.
Afraid it had the opposite effect on me. I had zero interest….until I saw the swatches. One of those ‘I don’t even favor these shades, and probably have ’em.’ Then….. Pat is so sublime, it’s hard to be objective! Who mfgs these, anyway?
Okay, I am not lying, I picked up the bundle the day it launched and I have no regrets. I love this eye shadow formula. I love the packaging. I love the shades but I don’t love the price. All in all, I decided the pros far outweighed the negatives, for me. I know that I will get a lot of use out of these palettes.
Also, one of these came broken? I can’t even tell!
Just curious what you think now. I also got them the day they came out. At first I felt disappointment because literally none of the 3 new palettes spoke to me. Then I tried them. Dark Star was an immediate home run. The looks I get with it are bomb every time. The other two took getting used to and learning the textures. I need a matte palette with Metalmorphosis and found a shadow in the Viseart neutral matte palette called “Cendre” that’s a lovely taupe to blend out Smoked Amethyst, the dark purple. As for bronze temptation – still playing with it to find a look that feels great.
Hi Valerie,
I still love them just as much. I haven’t been wearing a lot of makeup over the past month do to a death in the family and just not being all that interested in putting a full face of makeup on everyday but I have no issues with these palettes. I am older, 65, as of last week and many people have difficulties with the formula on their older eye lids. I tend to go with a lighter application so I personally haven’t had any issues. Frankly, any shimmer shade will accentuate texture and I suppose these are the same although I don’t notice it more using these shadows than any other shimmer formula. I know a lot of older women shy away from shimmer and glitter on the lids but I earned the right to do my makeup however I want so I don’t really follow any rules.
I find the eye shadows to apply well, blend easily and wear okay. I don’t need my eye shadows to wear 16 hours since I am retired but I get a good 8-10 hours before fading. I do think in my experience, they do fade a little sooner than some of my other shadows but again, not a deal breaker for me.
Never apologize for stuff arriving shattered! We’ve definitely all been there. I ordered Dark Star at the launch, it arrived two days later and I’m already pretty obsessed. It’s my first PMG product and I really love it, totally get the hype! I especially love the shade Interstellar.
Wow – these all look seriously good! The swatches are fabulous and I love the Bronze Temptation one the best, but I do love the Metallurgy shade in the Subversive Metamorphosis palette too.
I wore Metallurgy with Smoked Amethyst today, just beautiful colors.
Ok, I couldn’t resist last week and I ordered my first PMG palette. I was agonizing over the swatches, thinking that of all the three six-pan palettes, the one that I can use for every day looks at the office is Sublime Bronze Temptation. I was almost sure that two of the colours, Corruption and Supernova, will be reserved for evening/special occasions makeup. As I mentioned ad nauseam on this blog, I lean towards more subtle looks, sophisticated but subtle.
I received the palette on Tuesday and now I understand what all of you were talking about when raving about PMG palettes. The quality is like something I’ve never seen/tested before. I don’t have the makeup skills that all of you have in order to create elaborate looks, neither the time and patience in the morning to blend, blend, blend. But the shades from this particular palette are so pigmented and they literally blend themselves.
To my great surprise, it was easy to incorporate the two duochromes (Corruption and Supernova) into a day time look for work, as they can be sheered if using a light hand, without any difficulty/effort. I was blown away by this. I also love that this palette has two mattes (the lighter brown can be used in the crease or as a base, and the dark one as an eyeliner). All in all, this is by far the best beauty purchase I’ve made so far and can’t wait to play with it more! 🙂
I could have written this myself. In fact, I had to check the name to make sure I hadn’t! Everything but sheering out the duochromes are EXACTLY my same experience. I’ve been building up corruption on the lid. It’s so pretty!
I love you PML However, I am getting really confused with the names of her pallets. I mean all of them-I can’t keep who and what straight! Am I alone in this ?♀️?
No ?
Oh dear me, I have quite the battle going on within myself over these! 90% is over the palettes, but I may have to snag either Christy or Omi!
OMG…My first Pat McGrath order. I bought all three eyeshadow palettes when she offered the discount. I love this formula. I love the pigmentation. I love the colors…the packaging…I’m just in love!
Ok waffling for tomorrows sale between Sublime Bronze Temptation and Subversive Metalmorphosis Palette. I love the metallic shades in the Subversive Metalmorphosis but I don’t want to pay for her matte shades in it. lol
The Bronze Seduction is in my cart takes care of that. Even taking out the Viseart palettes I sort of wanted after last years shattering issues. 😛 The Subversive Metalmorphosis palette is going to be way cheaper than the MAC single eyeshadows collection Holiday collection. 😉
Loving Elson in that red case.
Dark Matter arrived Tuesday and I absolutely ?. I’m going to grab sublime bronze temptation tomorrow during Rouge sale. After seeing the subversive metalmorphosus swatches I’m starting to think maybe I should grab it too.
You should. It’s gorrrrrrrrrrrrrgeous.
I got the bundle of 3 when it launched and I am in love with all 3 palettes.
Head over heels.
The Bronze Temptation is really reminding me of the Dose of Colors iluvsarahii pallette.
I think it’s because of the green color and the bronzy shade. I ordered two out of the three sets. I have the iluvsarahii palette as well. I’m going to compare them. Hopefully they are not too alike.
Didn’t realize there was a 7th shade available until these photos. The kit comes with 6 and then Flesh3 is available in a red, pink, or blue barrel. Thankfully I don’t have the color and can justify buying it but now I have to decide which barrel color!
I just ordered Bronze Temptation and got 20% off with the Rouge VIB code, so that’s pretty great 🙂 I’m so excited to get this one; the swatches of Supernova and Corruption are blowing my mind lol. Christine, I love how you used Supernova for an inner corner pop in the look you did. Very creative and pretty!
Any idea when these will be in sephora stores? I have store credit I want to use and you can use it online, unfortunately!
No idea!
Ended up going in and they are in my store already!
Oh, awesome!!
I’m really loving the new “Gallery Options” format of these posts allowing us to toggle between swatches and products. Keep up the amazing work, Christine!
Today will be an expensive afternoon for me.
I am probably the odd duck here, but I have one of the mothership palettes, and I do not like the way the eyeshadows apply at all. The eyeshadow texture is not friendly to the eyelids of ladies of a certain age. The colors, however, are gorgeous, and I keep trying to wear them, although they don’t really work for me. 🙁 While I will admire these photos, I will not be purchasing any of these palettes.
I’m with you, I’m not crazy about the super dense metallic shadows on the market today. They ARE a cinch to apply and blend, but I find they accentuate lid texture and make my lids look… thick or heavy?
I do like metallics but I have aged skin and also wear glasses so once swatched and even on my eyes (I went to a Sephora store), I decided they were not going to work for me. I ended up buying the older Mothership II because the colors were a little lighter and the metallics were so glittery to me.
I also have aged eyes, but I use them lightly and make sure my eye area is moisturized well. I use no more than three colors at a time because of my aged eyes. Usually limit to one metal and then mattes. These look wonderful on my aged eyes as long as its not too complicated. Mothership II is very nice as well as Mothership I, which is cooler.
I am cursing my luck! I have to wait until the first, when I get paid, to buy this… I am praying to the make-up gods that the Bronze Temptation Palette doesn’t disappear on me!
How I wish I could pick and choose and customize from amongst these palettes (or that I’d win some sort of contest and receive them all). Given the prices of these and that all of the palettes contain shades I don’t like along with one or two I really love, these would be pricey but impractical purchases that would really clutter up my vanity area. And there isn’t just a single one that is “perfect”.
…also, I wish the names of the palettes weren’t all so similar that it’s confusing. I saw that Cathy posted about getting Bronze Temptation and I thought “Hey, that’s the same one I have” but it’s not. I have the “Sublime Bronze Ambition” palette. Too many too similar names!
It’s mildly infuriating to see that splendid duochrome be photographed so ineptly.
I’m not sure which shade you’re referring to, but when I see any shifts, I take a second swatch photo (which isn’t included in a sneak peek), but you can view if you click on the shade (to see all the photos related to it, same as any sneak peek) where I’ve done my personal best to show any particular sparkle/shift/nuance.
I’m always open to constructive feedback – perhaps you could share some advice on doing a better job capturing it (using still photos)?
Hey, I think you handled this comment with amazing grace and kindness. I wanted to comment that your eye looks for these pallets are killer and so on point! And that it’s really in the eye looks that I can see the shift, colours, blendability and wear. You’re a gem.
Ditto that. Incredibly rude and disrespectful commentator. Or stupid. Or new to makeup. Maybe all three. Clearly doesn’t understand that duo chrome means two colors at two different angles and sometimes more, and that photographing without filters often doesn’t capture them.
Eagerly awaiting my flight home from Toronto to Cali just knowing that these palettes are waiting for me! ? It is definitely a splurge but I have all of her palettes and absolutely no regrets! And seeing Christine demo them on herself, well….I thought that Dark Star would be my favorite but I think the Metallic Subversive palette is my favorite right now. It will go well with the Decadence palette- which was very limited and I don’t think she has any more right now for sale. I love that palette as well as the original Subliminal palette. Took advantage of the 10% off because I was impatient and could not wait for the Sephora Rouge sale, now they are 20% off at Sephora if there are any in stock. If they are in stock, I would suggest taking advantage of that sale and purchasing them. Christine love all of your looks with these palettes, especially with the Subversive palette!
Okay, I’ve still never gotten one of her palettes (original Dark Star, really great), but no palettes and as I read everyone’s comments, almost drool over the swatches, I’m still torn between the Mothership one (Subliminal in particular as it’s unique for my collection and I so like the color scheme) vs. the set (in particular the Subliminal Dark Star). Does anyone have them both or all and what are the differences? I’m going to be going back to Christine’s reviews and re-read everything, but I also wanted to hear from others who have used them. Thanks!
All three are superbly done. I didn’t feel that the palette shades would work together until I saw the swatches.
I’d have a rough time ranking them but will try; Bronze Temtation would be #1 followed by
Metalmorphosis #2 & Opilence #3. Although I would be able to make them all work, I like the turquoise shade and the orchid shade, & the dove blue gray too.
These shadows are awesome. Pat McGrath products are the Creme of the crop. I purchased one of the 6 pan palettes offered in the Spring and just love everything about it.
Very nice Holiday from PM!
