Pat McGrath Guinevere & Deep Orchid MatteTrance Lipsticks Reviews & Swatches
Guinevere
Pat McGrath Guinevere MatteTrance Lipstick ($38.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a deep red with warm undertones and a satin finish. The color coverage was opaque in one layer (if it was possible to apply half of a layer, that might be all one really needed!), and the color applied evenly and smoothly without settling in my lip lines. It had a smooth, velvety consistency that was creamy without being slippery or “wet.” This particular shade seemed to camouflage my natural texture as well. On me, the lipstick stayed on well for seven hours, left a faint stain behind, and was hydrating while worn.

Formula Overview
$38.00/0.14 oz. - $271.43 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to be “richly pigmented” with “”supreme hydration” and “opulent matte opacity.” The consistency was smooth, velvety, and dense without being too firm for one-stroke, glide-on application (I found the original shades to be slightly firmer compared to more newly released shades). They had nearly opaque to opaque coverage in one layer and most were buildable.
They had a subtle sheen--more satin-to-cream in finish--that wore down to a natural matte finish within an hour or two of wear. The formula lasted between four and eight hours on me, and while most weren't drying, they aren't "supreme[ly" hydrating either. They are, however, comfortable to wear over a longer period of time and reapply well. There was no discernible scent or taste to the formula.

Deep Orchid
Pat McGrath Deep Orchid MatteTrance Lipstick ($38.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a cream finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, as it didn’t seem to apply quite as well along the inner area of my lips (was slightly under full coverage whereas other areas seemed fully covered). The consistency felt lightweight despite having a thicker feel to it, and the lipstick was creamy enough to glide on without tugging but not so much that it felt slippery while worn. It was comfortable to wear over the seven hours it lasted for, and it felt lightly moisturizing while I wore it.

Guinevere is one of the four new lippies I picked up last week. I wore it a couple of days ago and what a gorgeous colour. I am taking this one to Europe with me because it is such a nice fall shade. I can’t get over what an amazing lippie formula this is and how comfortable to wear. I always layer a balm under and over any matte lipsticks because I just can’t handle the drying, cracked look on my lips and the feeling that my lips are going to fall off, but this formula I don’t have to do that and it wears so well. My hat’s off to Pat McGrath and so happy for her that she has created this amazing line of makeup!
Happy to hear that your lipsticks arrived and are working well for you so far!
Pat McGrath has some of the best lipstick formulas on the market. The price is totally worth it. I own one of the MatteTrance and one of the Luxe and I love them both. I definitely want to invest in some more colors, but I always have to wait for a sale. I think I’m going to grab Guinevere during the Rouge sale.
They are quite nice! I find I prefer the LuxeTrance formula a bit more, and I hope we’ll see shade extensions there next!
OMG I need all of these!!! I’m such a sucker for deep reds and berry colors. I don’t need another lipstick in life. I have so many, I can wear a different color every day for at least a year without repeating just a reference to my ever so small collection (ha ha just kidding I know it’s redonkulous!!). I’m trying!!!
Keep trying, Shalonda! It’s good to use what you have 😉
I hear you on the ridiculous amount of lipsticks I have, Shalonda. Like you, reds, berries and plums are my go-to shade. I did a huge de-clutter about 6 months ago now and already see the need to get rid of a few more. I am trying to use them all once to evaluate whether I like the formula enough to keep or should I just get rid of them. Sometimes I will love the colour so much and will purchase and then get home and can’t tolerate the formula or the scent. Instead of taking them back, giving them away or junking them they sit in my lipstick drawer for ages until I finally notice them when I need additional space. Lipsticks and finishing powders are my downfall. I always tell myself that there are actually more expensive hobbies out there and that makes me feel better. I am in denial, LOL.
These are all sooo beautiful. I can’t wait to see your roundup so I can pick which one(s) I’m willing to splurge on.
They are quite lovely!
These lipsticks look great on you! Nice for fall & winter, I think. Two seasons we don’t have here. I’m wondering if I could wear the 1st one. Both look so rich.
Thank you, Janice!
I’m so happy, I could just “squeee” in delight! Yes, to Deep Orchid, because I didn’t see MAC Sí, Sí Me listed as a dupe! I seriously feared that it would be. Now, I feel justified putting Deep Orchid on my WL.
Cannot say the same for this other total gem of a lipstick. Guinevere is EVERYTHING I would ever want in a deeper red lipstick, though! But, I do have PMG Strangé, which is a true gem, too.
Strange is great for fall!
Strange has been on my “maybe???” list since it got released. Still thinking on it.
Guinevere transfers horribly on me.
Do you mean that it feathers or that it transfers onto a cup? It doesn’t dry down, so I would expect some transfer.
Guinevere is absolutely stunning!
It is!
Have to look and see if these make it to Sephora’s site before the immediate sale, or whether it’s November, or I wait for a dedicated Pat sale. Despite having VG1, Louise, and Liquid Courage, I cannot write Guinivere off. It IS that perfect. Funny how you see infinitesimal differences in shades when they are your ride or dies. Pronfondo Rossos are my weakness. (Points to anyone who gets the Gialli reference. Wasn’t Hemmings gorgeous as a young man?) Oops, that was a Muse comment! Totally, I’m nearly embarrassed.
They are all at Sephora already 🙂
Just. Plain. Gorgeous. (mic drop)
Guinevere looks exactly like my kind of a fancy lipstick splurge.
Just when I thought “eh, I don’t need another red lipstick.” Oh yes. Yes I do.
