OCC Cosplay and John Doe Lip Tars Reviews, Photos, Swatches

OCC Cosplay Lip Tar
OCC Cosplay Lip Tar

OCC Cosplay Lip Tar ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “teal-toned green.” It’s a muted, medium-dark green with very subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had rich pigmentation that covered the lips evenly and smoothly without turning patchy/streaky, which is what I have found many green-based shades suffer from in the past. The color sits in lip lines slightly, but it didn’t seem to worsen during wear. It wore for seven and a half hours and left behind a bluish stain. It is mint scented, like other Lip Tars, and it was a little drying towards the end. ColourPop Bunny (P, $5.00) is darker, more shimmery, warmer. ColourPop Charm (P, $5.00) is lighter. NYX Risque (P, $6.00) is darker, more shimmery. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

OCC John Doe Lip Tar ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “pale ash-toned taupe.” It’s a gray-ish, light beige with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had good color coverage that went on fairly evenly. The color pulled into some of my most obvious lip lines, and after about five hours of wear, the color settled more noticeably into lip lines, though the color lasted about six and a half in all. It was neither drying nor hydrating for me. MAC Obviously Bare (LE, $15.00) is sheerer, glossier, warmer. MAC Peach Beige (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Sebastian (P, $18.00) is much darker. MAC Angel’s Kiss (LE, $16.00) is lighter, warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

John Doe gave this instant ‘oooooh, that feels a bit morbid’ simply because the name and the colour makes me think of dead people. It also doesn’t help that I was just reading Silence of the Lambs 15 minutes ago. The least streaky nude I’ve seen for a while though!

Wow! Cosplay is a beautiful color. I’ve never been much of a bright, atypical lipstick kind of person (although I have been wanting a black lipstick), so I could never pull it off probably, but props to those who can and ill

How do lip tars fair when you eat? And how do you touch up? Do you have to bring a lip brush with a cap on it or in a little plastic bag? This has kept me from buying any lip tars, it seems impractical for going out.

Christine Avatar

I’ve eaten with Lip Tars on, and they’re not a product that I’ve felt needs a touch-up on the rare occasion where it would be the only product I’d wear for the day, but I’d expect most would just use a lip brush that already has a cap on it or pat a little on with fingertips!

Margot Avatar

Since it doesn’t fully dry, it will transfer off like any lipstick would; fortunately with how pigmented they are, it’s not very noticeable for a while… For when I do need a touch up, I actually have a small compact I got on amazon that has about 8 individual wells and a spot perfectly sized for occ’s mini brush. I’ll apply lip tar the usual way, then put a heavy drop into one of those wells and throw it into my bag for later. Bonus is that it keeps my custom mixes safe and fresh for me, too!

Ellie Avatar

They don’t last very long on me. I definitely have to reapply after eating. But the lip tars come in a tiny plastic pouch which contains a small brush, so it’s easy to toss the whole thing in my purse.

Ceranna Avatar

For me, it’s always been about what I eat. Dry, crumbly foods get caught in the product and fatty/oily foods sometimes break it down. I bought a lip brush with a retractable cap, I load it with the color, since you need such a tiny amount, I leave the tube at home. I’ll only wear it if I know I will be eating lightly. For heaving meals, I opt out of lip color or use a more traditional stain.

But that’s just my experience, your mileage may vary. 🙂

Mel Avatar

I feel the same! It kills me, because I absolute LOVE the colors, and how they look on Christine. On me, the finish is always glossy (yes, the matte ones 🙁 )

Ellie Avatar

One of their key features that distinguishes them from other brands is that you can mix the lip tars to create your own color. That wouldn’t be possible, or at least it would be much harder, if they were in a lipstick form.

I haven’t tried it myself, but there are DIY tutorials out there for making them into pencils. This is one: http://www.portraitofmai.com/2013/07/diy-tutorial-turn-your-lip-tars-into_20.html . I’m assuming there would be some on Youtube, also.

I know TBKtrading.com has blank pencils, etc.

I agree that mixing them would be a bit harder in pencil form, but they’d work if you just wanted the color in the squeeze tube. Or if you had a couple colors you wanted to mix as liquids, then make into a pencil.

Oh man, Cosplay is beautiful!!! Do you know if these are going to be sold at Sephora? I just checked the OCC section on Sephora’s site and it seems like they aren’t restocking anything and what they do have left is a very limited selection. :\

Alecto Avatar

Colleen, either OCC is pulling out of the Sephora stores, or you must live near me. I just got back from Sephora about 20 minutes ago and their OCC endcap has maybe two dozen things on it. And I mean two dozen total packages, not two dozen different types of items. I went there looking for a number of things, but I specifically wanted John Doe. The lady who was helping me said they haven’t been sent anything in a long time.

Lotus Avatar

Oh my God!!! This brings me wayyyyyyy back!!!! I’m smiling! When I was 14/15, I had these tubs of Manic Panic pearl used whipped gel type use anywhere color, and the one was exactly this shade of green! My friend and I would go up to this one byilding’s bathroom and cover our lips, eyes, add to hair, and we had a blast together all the time!!! We were so wild, free, young, and it was such an important period in my life. How beautiful living without social media and having no fear, just to survive and explore the world we’re in! We were probably in one of the last born who had a chance to live that way. No care in the world, just free. Emblematic. So many decades of life after.. Those moments running around thoughtless become an egima when aware of the world. I always would like to go back in time to those days. 🙂

Lotus Avatar

Yes!!! I think it really is!! That and nail polishes caught up prior as well! It makes it so much easier and healthier for people to find exactly how they want to express themselves! 😀

Nancy T Avatar

And here I have been listening to, singing along with and dancing my booty off to 80’s music all yesterday and today! That was such a fun and fab time to be young! I used to hit my hair with vivid yellow streaks, and do my eyeshadow in black and metallic yellow-gold! Bright fuschia too!

Alecto Avatar

I really like John Doe. I haven’t purchased any lip tars, but there was a time when I was seriously considering purchasing two of them (Sebastian and Covet) to achieve this exact color as a mix. Now here it is. I guess … I’m getting my first lip tar.

Veronica Avatar

I can’t believe they went there with “John Doe.” I mean, at least they know what kind of color they’re selling. 🙂 Cosplay is actually quite a pretty shade, even if it’s not one I’d go out of my way to wear.

Marissa Avatar

Cosplay looks great, it’s sad that in my country people judges you for what do you wear but it’s really pretty! a color that catches your eye inmediately!

Mel Avatar

They look gorgeous… Too bad they don’t last AT ALL on me, and never dry down. Since I’ve been using longwear liquid lipsticks, I never reach for the lip tars anymore. I love the range colors though!

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

Fun but not my style. Green is too non traditional and 65, THe I beige too opaque for my coloring. Fun for others to plaY. (Im a bit too old) IMO.
