Natasha Denona Umber (78M) Eyeshadow
Natasha Denona Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.08 oz.) comes in 66 shades with four distinct finishes (Matte, Duo-Chrome, Metallic, and Sparkling). According to the brand, the eyeshadow formula is supposed to have “full, rich and intense color that won’t fade out, be “long-lasting,” and smooth. The majority of the shimmery shades were very pigmented with a soft consistency that was something just right and other times a little prone to crumbling/loosening in the pan, while the mattes were smooth but quite powdery, which resulted it color that didn’t adhere to bare skin as readily. The texture of most shades is soft, blendable, and most of the shimmery shades I’ve tested applied well to bare skin. The wear was fairly consistent, but there was some variance from shade to shade (which didn’t seem related to finish). The wear has ranged from five to eight hours, depending on the shade. Primer helps with longevity, adding two to three hours to the shade’s no-primer wear time, but they seem like shorter-wearing eyeshadows compared to most powder formulas I’ve tried.
Check out my first review for more depth about the formula as well as a pricing breakdown for singles compared to palettes.
True Gold (20M) is a bright, sparkling antique gold with hints of green and a cooler champagne sheen. It is a chunkier shade that really has to be pressed and worked into the skin to avoid adding texture to the lids, thickening, as well as to manage the excessive amount of fall out during application. Once in place, it can look lovely, but it can take a little effort; if used with a slightly dampened brush, I found it helped a lot to apply more smoothly without the work. The color started to crease on me after seven hours. LORAC Olivine (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Dominique Cosmetics Cucumber (PiP, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Shiny Happy (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop Universe (LE, $4.50) is less shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop Sleigh (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Antique Olive (14M) is a medium-dark, olive green with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was slightly loose in the pan, so it was easy to get too much product on the brush and have fall out during application so use less than you think you’d need with this shade. The color wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing. Lisa Eldridge Daphne (P, $27.00) is warmer (95% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Extravirgin (P, $8.00) is cooler (95% similar). Makeup Geek Jester (P, $9.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Golden Olive (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Inglot #412 (P, $7.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Give Me Glow Shaken Not Stirred (PiP, $7.00) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Sing Ho (LE, $4.50) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Fig (PiP, $9.99) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Sydney Grace Gold Earth (P, $6.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Terra Moons Dirty Martini (P, $6.25) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Smoky Quartz (43P) is a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a subtle, gray overtone. The color payoff was great with a really smooth, cream-like consistency that applied well to bare skin and lasted for eight hours before creasing. Sephora Druzy (PiP, ) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Hooked (LE, $4.50) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Sydney Grace Recruit (P, $6.25) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Mirage (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Dream Glow (Enhance) (LE, ) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Umber (78M) is a dark, reddish brown with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, blendable consistency that wasn’t too soft or too firm, and it applied with the same intensity on bare skin as seen in the pan. The color started to crease on me after seven and a half hours of wear. Make Up For Ever I606 Pinky Earth (DC, $21.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Lie Low (DC, $21.00) is darker (95% similar). I’m sure this has been disclaimed elsewhere and I missed it, but do you test the longevity of wear without primer? Do you disclaim when you do wear these with primer?
I don’t test with primer. As noted above (and in general), the formula is supposed to be long-wearing – and that’s really the key, so since it’s supposed to be long-wearing as an eyeshadow, then primer should be unnecessary. If in the rare instance I test with primer, I will mention it. It’s pretty rare that I would test with primer AND rate it with primer (it would have to be something that suggested it wouldn’t wear long or was designed to be used with a primer). Hopefully that makes sense!
Looking good!
Thanks, Alison!
I am such a sucker for olive gold shades — if I put a 5 pan together, chances are, it will include True Gold and Antique Olive. Love the eye look you did! That’s how I usually wear these colors, neutrals with a pop of gold in the middle.
They are some lovely colors in the range! 🙂
These are gorgeous warm colours, definitely some of the better colours in the collection, it seems. And what an eye look! Stunning.
Thanks so much, Claire!
I quite like the looks of True Gold (I do like a cooler gold), Antique Olive, and Smoky Quartz, but I have good dupes for two of them. At this point I’m not sure if I will be picking anything up from this brand, at least right now — it seems like I have good dupes for most of the colors that I like that perform decently.
At least you’ll have plenty of time to figure it out to decide if the dupes are good enough to keep you from getting tempted 🙂
Yes! There are plenty of other things making demands on my wallet right now, unfortunately.
These 4 shades sure did work very well together in this eye look you did! Very pretty! ?
I’m beginning to scare myself because yet again, I have enough dupes of these shades! Yeah, I’m a makeup addict. I’m not going to go to rehab, no no no. ?
(I probably butchered the lyrics, coffee hasn’t kicked in yet!)
Haha! Thank you, Nancy!
Smoky Quartz and Umber are stunners.
Glad ya liked ’em!
All very nice. Even though I’m not sure I’d wear it I love the green and champagne in the gold shade. It makes it very interesting to see on the skin.
It is an interesting combo!
I love your eye look, Christine. So pretty! Thanks for the reviews!
Thank you, Pteetsa!
beautiful look, christina!
Thanks, Anne!
I love that true gold color. will look for dupes though! Thanks for the reviews
My pleasure, Rachael!
Adore those True Gold and Antique Olive colours. They are definitely my kind of shades. And they look so beautiful on your eye look Christine.
Thank you so much, Genevieve!
Wow, True Gold looks amazing!!
Glad you enjoyed seeing it, Viki!
66 colors and different finishes? I bet we can all find a color we like – surely we can.
They are quite a few!
These four shades would work brilliantly on Indian warm skin tone.
Love these colors. 14M is my least favorite but still like it. These bronze/golds look so good with my blue grey eyes. Great selection.
Hey, lovely Christine! Do you think that True Gold or Indian Gold from Natasha Denona line are good dupes for UD Maui Wowie (sans the annoying silver glitter)? I would be very thankful for your insight!
True Gold is definitely cooler-toned (stronger green tones), and Indian Gold is several shades lighter!
Thank you so much! Sounds like True Gold could be worth purchasing, slightly cooler would actually be great. Awesome swatches – as always 🙂
