Natasha Denona Palette 01 Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Natasha Denona Palette 01 Eyeshadow Palette 5

Palette 01

Natasha Denona Palette 01 Eyeshadow Palette 5 ($48.00 for 0.40 oz.) contains four shimmery shades and one matte shade. The current formulation used in the five-pan palettes is much improved compared to formula I tested in 2016. All five shades performed better, while the colors were fairly consistent, though sometimes the shimmer was more standout in the updated formula.

Back story: I purchased all of the 5-pan palettes a few months ago to re-review because if there’s a brand that has a more constant, evolving formula… it is Natasha Denona (the ingredient list is substantially different today compared to the original release and even from a few years ago). I have better experiences with the more updated formulas, so it seemed like a good way to test the current formula as well as get updated swatches. This week, the brand is running buy one, get one free on the 5-pan palettes… so… here we are… frantically reviewing them! Leave a comment with which one of the original 13 you are most desperate to see re-reviewed, and I will endeavor to make it so!

Natasha Denona Golden Aquamarine (86P) Duo-Chrome Eyeshadow

Golden Aquamarine (86P)

Golden Aquamarine (86P) is a brighter, mint green with cooler undertones and warmer, golden shimmer throughout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges. The texture was smooth to the touch, dense and a bit emollient (but more in a velvety way), so it worked better with a moderate brush and/or a flat brush for picking up product. It wore well for eight hours before fading visibly on me.

The updated formula is smoother, slightly more emollient, and the color is deeper, greener.

Formula Overview

$29.00/0.08 oz. - $362.50 Per Ounce

The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.

The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.

Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Natasha Denona Navy (01V) Matte Eye Shadow

Navy (01V)

Navy (01V) is a medium-dark blue with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was finely-milled, soft, and a little powdery in the pan, but it adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out well. It had good pigmentation that built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer more. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

The color appeared a bit brighter than the original, but the performance was vastly improved, though I don’t think the matte formula here is as good as the Creamy Matte formula used in newer palettes.

Natasha Denona Piggy (80M) Metallic Eye Shadow

Piggy (80M)

Piggy (80M) is a light pink with strong, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, cream-like texture that wasn’t too firmly nor too softly pressed into the pan. It applied well to my lid and blended out with little effort. This shade lasted well for nine hours before fading a bit.

It is a lot more refined with a denser texture that held together better than the original I have, though the color and finish seemed to be nearly identical. It doesn’t have as much creaminess (which I’d expect based on how the formula has changed in terms of ingredients) to the touch–I just didn’t find that mattered for actual application and seemed to improve longevity overall.

Natasha Denona Graphite (07M) Metallic Eye Shadow

Graphite (07M)

Graphite (07M) is a deep gray with cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t too firmly-pressed into the pan but wasn’t prone to fallout. It applied well to bare skin and blended out with ease. This shade wore nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

The formula felt a bit less cream-like, but it wore better and was easier to work with, and the shimmer seemed to standout more.

Natasha Denona Slate (27M) Metallic Eye Shadow

Slate (27M)

Slate (27M) is a medium-dark purple with cooler undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was dense, smooth, and more firmly-pressed into the pan, but it wasn’t stiff or difficult to pick up, just seemed to have a higher-level of binder that ensured fallout was kept to the minimum (or next to none!). The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that applied beautifully to bare skin and stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly.

It was very similar in color but appeared a bit more shimmery/metallic and had better wear time with the current formula, while the texture felt denser but had similar ease in application.

There aren’t any palettes in this collection that particularly appeal to me. Which sounds kind of negative, but on the other hand, it’s good for my bank account!

The shades in this one look pretty, but I cannot see myself getting a good look from this palette.

Christina Avatar

It’s like you’re a mind reader, Christine! I was just looking at these five pan palettes and this was one of them I was curious about! I didn’t realize that she changed her formula across the Board and thought it was only on her newer palettes. This is great news because I do like her matte formulas in general (the shimmers tend to be too emollient on my eyes and disappear quickly, sadly).

Christine Avatar

And it depends on the stock, too. The formula in the newer packaging (which is slimmer) is different than the larger, original packaged 5-pans. I’ve never seen a brand have such a variety in ingredient lists, LOL.

I had a similar issue – the earlier shimmer formula often creased around the 7-hour mark (which isn’t terrible), whereas the newer ones tend to wear 8-9 hours and are more likely to fade a bit vs. full-on creasing.

Susannah Avatar

I’d love to see #3. I’ve had my eye on that for awhile. I’m also interested in #11. I really wish she’d rerelease a single of Calypso Blue! I’m gonna need a backup of that and I don’t want to have to buy a whole palette just for one color. (Unless you know of a perfect dupe, Christine!) I’m actually reeeeeally tempted to get both 28 pan palettes. I have several of the 5 palettes, so that really wouldn’t be smart! Ugh…these Black Friday sales always end up being Christmas for myself, since my mom and sisters rarely wear makeup anymore.

Stella Avatar

I’ve got you!! I don’t personally have Calypso Blue but I have swatched it in stores because blue/berry/brown shifting shades are my favorite! I do have all of these shadows and I can’t verify if they’re exact dupes, but I can confirm they are all beautiful.

Susannah Avatar

Oooh, thanks Stella! I’ll have to check those out. The Devinah one has been on my list since it came out, but it keeps selling out before I can snag it. Hopefully I will be quick enough to get it at the Black Friday sale!

Christina Avatar

I’m tempted to get the 28 pans also! I don’t have any of the 5 pans except for a Joya and Ares from a holiday collection, so these would be all new for me. But the price is still hard to digest. LOL!

kjh Avatar

It is pretty remarkable that ND continues to upgrade her formula. The general trend we see is towards sourcing cheaper ingredients for an even higher margin! The ND sale is pretty fab. Have come close to scoring ND Safari more than once, but staying resolute. Btw, SG ice fishing is available in the winter 17 bundle, but probably d/c’d as a single. Love that bundle.

Valerie Avatar

I went to the store today and was told that the shades in the 5-pans all come from existing palettes (28-pans and the 10-pan). The swatches were amazing. I picked up #8. But received it in the old packaging and haven’t touched it yet. Hopefully they’ll take it back tomorrow.

The ones I’d love to see reviewed are:
2, 8
4, 13

Thank you!

Ariane Avatar

Hey Christine, to the best of your knowledge has the formula been upgraded in the 28 pan palettes too? By the by, I really appreciate the tremendous amount of work you put into this and I alway check your reviews before I purchase šŸ™‚

Christine Avatar

I would expect that there has been some change over time just based on seeing how often everything else has changed, but I don’t have any new/current/recently purchased 28-pan palettes so I’m not sure by how much, where those fall in the cycle, etc. The biggest issue is that retailers carry it as a single SKU, so you may or may not get the most “current” and have no real way of knowing. The 5-pans were easier to assess because they updated packaging along the way, so anything in the new packaging is at least newer.

I suspect that the switch from acacia decurrens/jojoba/sunflower seed cera/polyglyceryl-3 esters had one of the bigger impacts on longevity – you won’t see that in the more updated 5-pan palettes. There’s also no zea mays that I can tell. (I just did a ctrl+F for those two.) For the 28-pans, Sephora doesn’t have them in stock, and both Sephora and ND websites list ingredients that appear to be closer to the older/original formula.

Even with 5-pans, when I bought from Beautylish a few months ago, I received over half of the palettes in the older packaging (Beautylish was great; they double checked for new inventory, replaced with new if they had it, allowed me to return what wasn’t). I had better luck with Sephora obtaining everything in the new packaging (at least).

Christina Avatar

That’s exactly what I did as well. I just ctrl+F to see what ingredients differed. I’d say on Natasha Denona’s website, if their ingredient listing is up to date, the 28 pans listed are going to be similar in formula to the Lila palette. That’s the formula that doesn’t work for me, so I guess it’s the small pans for me! At least I won’t be so upset if a $48 palette creased on me versus a $239. LOL!

I’m so glad for Temptalia readers! I almost purchased the big palettes if it weren’t for someone questioning if the 28 palettes had the newer formula as well.

Valerie Avatar

Hi again Christine
It looks like we’re all asking the same questions simultaneously, sorry if you’ve already answered this: could you explain this more, ā€œI suspect that the switch from acacia decurrens/jojoba/sunflower seed cera/polyglyceryl-3 esters had one of the bigger impacts on longevity – you won’t see that in the more updated 5-pan palette. Does that mean the longevity is reduced in the newer 5-pan, no parabens?

Also by law if a product formula is changed, either the box/container or the packaging/product itself needs to change or reflect it in some way eg label that says ā€œimproved!ā€, different color or shape box, etc

I hear the 28-pans are being discontinued. Idk if this means she’s making a different version or formula…

Valerie Avatar

That’s what I’m thinking of doing, the smaller palettes are easier to use. I wonder if she updated the formula in her 28-pan? Can’t know for sure so better go with the 5-pans for new formula.
I want to pick them all up…
I need to be stopped!! Lol

Christine Avatar

I know that she has, though I don’t know what the most current iteration looks like (the 5-pans are easier to spot because of the change in packaging, but even the older packaging ingredient list differs from the original!). I know that my 28-pan palettes included parabens, but almost instantly after I reviewed those, the palettes were released without those, so I know they have changed to some degree…

Valerie Avatar

Oh right, that makes sense with the ingredients you listed. I wasn’t thinking longevity on eyelid but longevity of the palette.. I was thinking paraben-free – those palettes probably wont last 20 years, unlike my MAC shadows šŸ˜‰

Christine Avatar

Some of the 5-pans from recent purchases have the jojoba sunflower seed line item (the slashes confuse me if it’s one ingredient or a mix), but there are more ingredients before it, so it doesn’t seem to be as prevalent (texturally, it’s easier to tell, because the original formula felt more like a cream-powder hybrid). Other iterations don’t have it all.

I think there are at least three iterations as the NEWEST versions are 24M and the prior (but in new packaging) has 12M. It’s pretty confusing but has had a meaningful impact on the overall wear/application over time.

Christina D. Avatar

I appreciate your input. The cynic in me is thinking that, even if ND has an updated formula for the 28 pan palettes, the ones being cleared out during the sale may be the previous iteration. I read that all sales are final on the website, so as much as I’m lemming for them, I can’t take the risk for $260 ($239 + NY sales tax).

If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Valerie Avatar

BTW I went back to the ND store today and they were very nice and took back the palette and gave me one with the new packaging. I may or may not have subsequently bought some more 5-pans with the new formula, justifying this purchase as “I’m on a no buy the rest of this year”. That was before I saw the Sephora sale, the MELT 70% off sale, the Beautylish up to 50% off on Wayne Goss, etc sale… what is happening?? It’s not even Christmas yet! Heck, it’s not even Friday yet!!

Cassie Avatar

Do you think the formulation in the large 28 pan palettes has been updated as well? I think a lot of the 5 pan palettes share the same colors as the 28 pans if I’m not mistaken? Was very curious if they have been updated across the board??

Christine Avatar

I’m sure they have been to some degree, but I have no idea where it would be in the cycle. The 5-pans include shades from both the larger 28-pan palettes as well as the original 10-pan palette. The 5-pans changed packaging, so the newer packaging is definitely a newer formula; easier to spot/confirm. The older 5-pan palettes I’ve received (and then returned because I wanted the newest) had different ingredients compared to my original 28-pans but also compared to the newest 5-pans.
