NARS Ratin Jot Nail Lacquer

NARS Ratin Jot Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “orchid purple.” It’s a muted magenta pink with a cream finish. Illamasqua Obsess is more vibrant, less pink. Deborah Lippmann Makin’ Whoopee is more fuchsia. Zoya Areej is dustier, pinker, less vibrant. SpaRitual Color Trip is pinker.

The formula on Ratin Jot was lovely–richly pigmented (opaque in two coats, but almost in one), not too thick or too thin, and flowed beautifully across the nail without streaking, bubbling, or pooling. This color is very saturated and almost neon, but it’s shy of it.  There’s a slightly muted quality that keeps the pink hues from turning fuchsia, but there’s still enough richness that it pulls very magenta. I typically get a week of wear with minor tip wear but no chipping with NARS’ lacquer formula.

I went to Sephora last Thursday on the off-chance that maybe they would have the Thakoon collection, even though it’s not supposed to be in their stores yet. And yes! Two lovely ladies went to the back and brought out all but the mandarin red/Lal Mirchi.  They let me swatch a few on a piece of tape and, I have to say, I was REALLY disappointed in the Ratin Jot (and the Anardana).  The Ratan Jot was my #1 choice from the moment that NARS released the photos. You have no idea how much I’ve lusted after it. But looking at it in the bottle and on the swatch, it was duller and more subtly…. light plum (?) in undertones. I can’t describe it, perhaps because it’s such an unusual shade. Neither here nor there. But it was just seemed to … sorta, lay there (?) thickly when I put the swatch against my skin. It looked dull or dulled flat (if that makes any sense), like in the last photo you have up there. Absolutely *nothing* like the bright glowing POP and jewelled tones from the promo photos. I was so disappointed that I — the NARS fanatic — didn’t buy any of them.  Let’s hope the Lal Mirchi doesn’t disappoint me when it comes in.

Lovely! This is really unique, despite being a cream finish. I have been loving these NARS/ Thakoon nail polishes; they pull a big punch with the neat shades, rather than relying on bells and whistles like glitter, duochrome, shimmer, etc… They feel really modern and classic to me.
