NARS Modern Future (Roman Holiday) Set Review, Photos, Swathces
NARS Modern Future Set
NARS Modern Future Set ($49.00 for 0.74 oz.) includes three products in the theme of Roman Holiday, a cool pink. The lipstick and nail polish are full size (0.12 oz. and 0.50 fl. oz. respectively), while the blush’s compact is the same size as a NARS’ single eyeshadow (but it contains 0.12 oz.). The set contains $26.00 of lipstick, $20.00 of nail polish, and $22.50 of blush for a total value of $68.50. The three products come inside a thick, plastic triangular box.
Roman Holiday (Lipstick) is described as a “pretty pastel with the most delicate hint of pink.” It’s a light-medium, cool-toned pink with a luminous finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage but lots of natural lip color will come through, so if you have more pigmented lips, this may look quite different applied. This shade is part of the permanent range for Sheer Lipstick, so the color coverage is as expecte.d The formula had a lot of slip, which made the color look streaky at times (and if you press your lips together, you’ll see “lines”). On me, it wore for two and a half hours. It was neither drying nor hydrating. NARS Marisa (P, $32.00) is more opaque, warmer. NARS Claudia (P, $32.00) is lighter, cooler. Bite Beauty Lavender (P, $24.00) is cooler. Estee Lauder Powerful (P, $30.00) is more opaque. MAC Rose Lily (LE, $16.00) is a lot lighter. NARS Villa Lante (LE, $25.00) is a touch lighter. YSL Fetish Pink (8) (P, $34.00) is more opaque, brighter. Urban Decay Obsessed (P, $22.00) is similar. MAC Asian Flower (LE, $17.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Divine Choice (P, $22.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Roman Holiday (Blush) is described as a “pretty pastel with the most delicate hint of pink.” It’s a brightened, light-medium, cool-toned pink with strong, blue undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft and finely-milled, though it was a little powdery. It can be applied and buffed into the skin so that it doesn’t look dry or powdery on. It had good color coverage that was buildable and lasted for eight hours on me. MAC I’m a Lover (P, $23.50) is lighter. Makeup Geek Hanky Panky (P, $9.99) is darker. MAC Young at Heart (LE, $20.00) is darker. Maybelline Pink Fever (20) (P, $8.99) is darker, cream, shimmer.Urban Decay Blush (P) is warmer. Milani Delizioso Pink (10) (P, $7.99) is very similar. Givenchy It-Girl Purple (P, $44.00) is lighter, warmer. NARS Mistinguette (LE, $29.00) is much lighter. theBalm Down Boy (P, $21.00) is warmer. NARS Gaiety (P, $29.00) is lighter, cooler-toned. MAC Peony Petal (P, $21.00) is darker. MAC I’m the One (LE, $21.00) is darker. Bobbi Brown Nude Pink (P, $26.00) is slightly warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Roman Holiday (Nail Polish) is described as a “shimmery begonia pink.” It’s a muted, medium pink with very subtle cool undertones (almost a neutral pink, as it sometimes looks warmer on me, against my warmer complexion). There is a very fine shimmer in it, but it is hardly noticeable except up-close and in bright lighting. It was opaque after two coats, and the formula wasn’t too thick or too thin. I usually get seven days of wear out of NARS’ polish. Anna Sui Minnie Mouse Neon Pink (300) (LE, $16.00) is sheerer, more shimmery. Cult Nails Kiss My Rose Bush (P, $12.00) is more matte. MAC Snob (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Silly (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Please Me (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Chanel May (P, $27.00) is similar. Rescue Beauty Lounge Pepto Pink (LE, $20.00) is darker, warmer. Essie Off the Shoulder (LE, $8.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The lipstick might be a touch pale for me but I love the nail polish!! This would make such a pretty gift!
It would make a nice gift for sure! 😀
I am really disappointed the blush is a mini size, not a regular one. 🙁
Bummer!
Three products for under $50-it’s not a bad deal!
A great gift for a pink lover! Now where’s the coral version? 🙂
That would have been cool!
Gorgeous products!
Glad ya liked ’em, Kelly!
This is like bubblegum pinksplosion.
Haha! Very true. Bubblelicious!!
I love me some NARS, but this is so underwhelming and one-note. Literally.
Aww! I think they were banking on someone loving all pink!
Was that not the yum yum we’ve endured? What about Turkish Delight? The pepto box isn’t even as nice as the mini failure brushes… Oh, there are a few codes for marc jacobs and shu uemura right now. 😀
I think the brush box is just more useful (and it is a lot bigger). I liked all the boxes, though. Not sure what I’ll do with them yet, but I’ll keep them.
The larger one looked like glass. Packaging is paid for, there should be a use for it. Pigment sand sculpture?? Or done the way with salt.. Color it, poor in different levels, switch up colors, thst thing, and its a snowflake color madness! Re-gifting.. Garden.. lol, send them back to NARS for a refill. Haha 🙂
Some people, such as myself, actually enjoy the look of coordinated lip/cheek/nail products, and find it to be a classic/timeless look. There was a time it was the norm. Who knows, it may be an oncoming trend… Personally, when I want to look professional & sophisticated, I coordinate the three. My only issue is with the actual shade selection; as much as some are sick of seeing Orgasm pop up in every set, it would have been a broader choice-or even better, Sin or Oasis!
It is definitely becoming more trendy again to match lips and nails. I’m seeing it crop up in magazines, etc. again. I remember that was the norm for adults until…mid- to late- 1980s. (Does that sound right?)
I often did monochrome makeup looks in the late 80s – early 90s, till fashions started gravitating toward grunge and the browns took over for the bright colors.
I love sets like these! I really like the bubblegum pink colour – cannot wait to see the other review on similar sets!
Will this be a set you get this year, Stephanie?
A very pretty set. I don’t think I’ll get it as I suspect the lipstick not to suit me, and I don’t wear pink nailpolish very often.
I do like the lipstick on you, Christine. And I love the blush.
The blush is cute! Good thing NARS has a few cool toned pinks to choose from in their permanent range for those who’ll skip the set.
I actually really like the look of this!
Yay!
I’ll probably pass this set but definitely making a mental note to myself to buy this lipstick next time I’ll be passing by a NARS counter 😉
Maybe something else will tempt you while you’re there 😉
I’m not really feeling it. BTW you have two lipstick pictures in the glossover section so we’re missing the blush photo!
Thanks, Erin! Sooo annoying, because I totally fixed it this morning and don’t know why it won’t set the right image!
I really love that color pink, but it seems a weird choice for fall/winter.
I see what you mean – it is definitely not your classic set of shades!
I’m always cool with the rebellious color schemes. The pinks make this stand out.
I think this is very pretty!
If you like pink, it is a cute set!
Much like Nordstroms’ Dolce Vita set, I don’t care for the cosmetics, but love the nail polish. Too bad they can’t be purchased as a stand alone item.
Aww, what a bummer 🙁
I’m underwhelmed. Now bring on the coral!
Aw!
Such a nice gift! I’d love to see this under my Christmas tree too 🙂
Hope that you do 😉
The blush will probably be too pale for me but I’m loving the lipstick and polish! I just love this color
Do you have any bubblegum pink blushes you like, Fancie?
I think it would make a lovely gift for a (neutral/cool toned) pink lover. I think of feminine, girly, and a cute tweed Chanel skirt suit.
It could make a nice gift!
Such a prettyy pink set but the lipstick might not work for me.. it looks wonderful on u .. :-*
A great gift for pink loving gf’s 😉
Aw, thanks Poo!!
I like the lipstick’s shade a lot, actually, and the fact that it’s a bit sheer (I think a pink that cool and bright would be harder to pull off -well, on *me* – in a super opaque lisptick, somehow). It’s a shame that it does the smoosh/streak thing though… 😛
The polish is pretty too, but I think I’d need to add a high shine topcoat, just because I like my lacquers to look, well, lacquered! 😀
I totally hear you on a cool pink being opaque = harder to wear for some complexions. Now, if only sheer still meant even!
I’m not very interested in the lipstick or blush but I love the nail polish!
I like the light pearl in the polish!
My sister likes a little pastel pink, this is such a perfect supplemental holiday gift…! Are you loving that nail colour, Christine? it looks so pretty!
I bet she’d love it, Heather!
I don’t love it on me, but it’s a pretty shade 🙂
