NARS Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

NARS Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “bold red,” and it is certainly that: a decadent, deep red that’s neither blue nor orange. It is a cooler-toned red, so the base is subtly blue, but it is the type of red that will work on cooler and warmer skin tones. The finish is nearly matte, with a touch of shine when the light hits the center of the lips.

The Pure Matte formula is designed to be opaque and long-wearing in a base that glides on and wears comfortably–it also contains wild mango butter to moisturize lips. There is enough creaminess to allow the color to apply easily onto lips without dragging or pulling, but not so much that it causes feathering. The color becomes opaque in one stroke, too–very high pigmentation–and between the matte finish and the boldness of the color, it lasts six to eight hours on me. It does stain slightly if worn for more than a couple of hours.

I don’t find that all of the Pure Mattes are created equal, but the darker and bolder shades like Mascate work wonderfully. They’re mostly matte without being drying or uncomfortable to wear and deliver excellent color coverage with little product. It could be a touch more moisturizing over the time it wears, but for a matte, achieving “not drying” status is good.

Oh how I wish I could afford NARS. Something about the brand is so appealing to me, and I am REALLY loving this lip shade. Plus the promises of moisture from a matte finish sound fantastic.

Hi Christine – I was wondering if there is a way to tell what I’ve clicked “Loving It” to on your site? That way I can go back to see what I may be interested in purchasing.

Wow! You look stunning with this lipstick on!
I was wondering if there was a MAC dupe for this particular shade (one that would suit warm skintone) – I have B2Ms to use and if I could save money by getting an equivalent, it’ll be awesome! LOL. Otherwise, I’ll have to get this lipstick – such a gorgeous shade! *o*

CHRISTINE – When you refer to how long a lipstick lasts (in this case, six to eight hours), is that with not drinking and eating?

Babs Avatar

I have a new respect for you Christine. Even for the love of lipstick, I could not refrain from drinking or eating for 8 hours. You rock!

I like red lipstick and I fell in love with this shade immediately. I prefer a matte finish and for you to say it could be a touch more moisturizing over the time it wears is good news. If you had to compare the shade of the NARS Mascate Pure Matte lipstick with any lipstick what would it be? Thanks for the review.

Oh my, this is absolutely lovely. I usually try to avoid picking red lipsticks up because I have no where to wear them but this one is so perfect I’m content to just stare at it!

Wow. This lipstick makes you look absolutely glamorous, Christine. I wish I could wear reds like this, but it always makes my lips look tiny.

Do you like this better than Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque? and do you know how this compares to MUFE rouge artist intense in Moulin Rouge? thanks

This is to die for! I was just going to get a Back up of Mac’s Ruby Woo, which one do you prefer for a kind of Red koolaid stain? Lol sounds weird, but when I wear red lipstick I only wear a bit like a lip stain kinda just to Brighten my lips 😉

I just got this today, and I have dark skin; I black if that helps anyone and this looks AMAZING, I couldn’t even wait to wear it, so I put it on 4 hours ago and have yet to reapply it. Ruby Woo who?

Gwen Avatar

I find Nars Mascate is a wonderful darker red, a perfect retro red, I will certainly buy it
but I am also looking for a very bright red (matte) and I find that ruby woo from mac was perfect but on your swatch it seems so darker…
so what type of red is it ?

Gwen Avatar

thank you. just a last question : could Nars mascate be qualified of a dark red? I want to be sure that if I buy this one and ruby woo they wouldn’t be similar. as far as red lipsticks are concerned, have you tried revlon matte lisptick “really red”?
