NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick
NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick

NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “nude caramel.” It’s a soft, pumpkin peach-orange with very fine yellowed peach shimmer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Covet (P, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Sensual Sparks (LE, $16.00) is much sheerer and appears more muted as a result. NARS Floralies (P, $25.00) is lighter. MAC Sheer Mandarin (LE, $17.00) is brighter, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The formula didn’t feel like NARS’ Sheer Lipstick formula at all; it’s heavier with a thicker, creamier consistency with more of a satin-to-matte finish with fairly opaque color coverage. It seemed to have more in common with NARS’ regular lipstick formula (but not Audacious) than the Sheer Lipstick formula. The thicker consistency paired with subtle frost in it seemed to make it very prone to catching on any imperfections and made my lips look drier than they were (as they weren’t dry at all). It wore well for four hours, but it separated and pulled into lip lines and faded unevenly (left a bit of a ring of color behind). It was neither drying nor hydrating in my experience.

It is honestly one of the least flattering colors I’ve worn that I can recall (on me), and then the whole “making my lips look worse” was a bummer (because maybe it would work for someone else). I don’t usually have reactions either way (oh that’s pretty on me, oh that’s hideous on me), but when I was editing the photos, I was like, “What is going on? Why do I look so sick? Is my color balance off?!” LOL. I think it brings out green in my skin for some reason.

Debra Avatar

Green! Did you even think your skin has green undertones?! (I don’t think so it does.)

The shade looks better on you than it would on me. Not gonna guess what shade it might lure out of hiding!

Jessica Avatar

One of the least flattering colors, including or not including colourpop greens or that NYX yellow? Do you just mean, most unflattering to the “supposed-to-be-normal” shades?

Among the “supposed-to-be-normal” shades, I actually find the super light and opaque lilac-y pinks are the most unflattering, more so than this shade. I think shades like NYX rose macaroon are as unflattering as it gets (not on you, just on anyone) worse than swamp green.

I thought the overall collection was too tame for spring. Like the color of the lipstick though coz it’s pretty unique. Too bad about performance. But I might still pick it up

Oh this would look bad on me!
You seem to be having a week of C ratings…..and even Ds. Can you find an F? I say that somewhat as a joke…not critical at all. You tell it like it is…which is so appreciated (and think of all the money you’re saving me for better products!).

I like their color choice. It’s not an over done color. But the close ups… The formula’s finish looks strange and uncomfortable. And I know you have nice lips! I have dry lips so this would be a disaster on me.

Nicole Avatar

I would look like Frankenstein in this if it pulls the green out. I looked at myself yestrday out of the shower and actually said out loud “I look green”..blah..winter!

There’s just something off-putting about this shade, but I can see this looking good on just the right coloing. However, I’m not one of those people. Perhaps layered under a gloss…?

xamyx Avatar

Me, too! If my daughter were a bit older, I’d try it on her, LOL! She pulls off yellows & oranges better than anyone I’ve *ever* seen, and I think thos would actually work on her. Maybe if I catch it in-store, I’ll give it a try on her… I love how unique it is, and I’m dying to see it on someone who it would work on.

That was my very first reaction to this shade as well, baby poop!!! Perhaps that’s a “thing” this spring: wear the ugliest, most gross shades and in the worst formulas, and adding insult to injury, pay through the nose!

Rachel R. Avatar

The color itself is actually prettier on the lips than I would have thought, but no way I could pull this off. To me, it just doesn’t go with the rest of the collection very well.

BW Avatar

Reminds me of Story Sahara from the Maybelline in the Buffs collection – I had to return that one because it made me look like I was ready for the medical examiner to declare my cause of death!

Nicole Avatar

This entire line is bland. I like neutrals to some degree. But after winter, I think a nice pop of fresh color is nice.I think Nars may have made a mistake with this collection. They typically bring out some nice color for summer..we will see. Saves my wallet on the plus side. This color may have worked with a very dark skin. But the formula stinks. So,ugh.

Dia Avatar

I think this might work for a drag-style look on someone with a much darker skintone. Pair it with a black or burgandy lipliner for a ’90s flashback!

Julie Avatar

WOW. I know to each his/her own, etc…but that color is really and truly HIDEOUS to me. It has an odd greenish cast….I’m trying to imagine what coloring WOULD look good in this!! I know it would look even worse this cool-toned girl… And, Christine, I think your skin tone is so forgiving! It amazes me what a wide range of colors you can wear…I’ve seen colors that aren’t my preference on you, but I don’t recall ever seeing any color actually do bad things to you like this one!!! I would love to be proven wrong, but I’m pretty sure that if you can’t pull it off, no one can!!

Sylirael Avatar

Well, this is… not a surprise, sadly 🙁 A lesser adventurer might bask in having ‘called it’, but I was really hoping that this would turn out well. I mean, I’m sure that some will get on well with the colour, but it’s a real shame about the consistency/fading mechanism/liplining etc, because those aspects are a downer for pretty much everyone…

Jan Kelley Avatar

That color on me would have my friends calling the paramedics! I think it would bring out all of the yellow-green undertones in my skin. What a shame.

Ilovemakeup Avatar

I actually don’t think it looks bad on you, Christine! Maybe if you paired it with a less warm/pink-toned eye look it would be a little less orangey/gold looking. It certainly is much more flattering on you than on me, with my cool tones! I think I’d look jaundiced in this color, lol.

Alana Avatar

Yeah, the color itself is already kind of awkward and would turn off most people, and the finish it gives your lips on top of it makes it look so bleehhh! Even if it was an everyday shade, the way it emphasizes your lip lines and highlights the dryness is definitely not worth picking up!

Poonam Avatar

This is disappointing.. the frosty finish didn’t help!! the color wont work for me and I would stay away from its creamy heavy formula as well.. 😛 ..

By the way as you said it it has cream to matte finish, do you think it will work as highlighter or contouring shade for anyone.. if the formula allows??

Veronica Avatar

It did bring Floralies to mind, and I had the same question in mind looking at this as I did it – WHO looks good in this color? Unless my monitor pulls it completely off from its natural shading, I’ve yet to see a review where this really looked good on someone unless it’s dabbed down or mixed with something else.
