It’s silly, I know (or maybe not so silly) but if I’m travelling by plane, I never like to take palettes that I can’t replace (LE ones or ones I have to travel to the US to purchase – LORAC, for example, which means I need to also be somewhere with an ULTA nearby). And so if I’m flying, probably 8 times out of 10, I’ll grab the original Naked or Naked2 as I know either of those has everything I need to meet my basic needs and I can always grab a self-made more colourful 4-pan or a bright eyeliner if I think I’ll get bored with the neutrals.
I don’t think it’s silly at all. I don’t like to travel by plane LE palettes. I’m scared that they’ll get lost or broken, even though I keep makeup in my carry-on. I don’t like to take them on long trips, either, for the same reasons. I take one of my Naked or Chocolate palettes, usually.
The palette from my stash that comes closest to being “most versatile” for me is ColourPop Fame. I recently took it on vacation and was able to do day and evening looks with it.
Two of my favorite palettes are Tarte Amazonian Clay Mattes and Urban Decay Ultimate Basics, but since both palettes are 100% matte, I have to dip into another palette if I want to add shimmer (which I only use on my lids and only in light to light-medium shades).
Most mixed matte/shimmer palettes have too many shimmer shades that I’d never touch. The one palette that looks like it would have everything for me is Tarte’s In Bloom, but I don’t own it and can’t justify spending the money on it because I can dupe every shade several times over.
The most versatile palettes I voted for are mostly Urban Decay ones:
Nakeds 1 + 2
Vice 2
Urban Spectrum
I also voted for Lorac Pro Metal palette and bareMinerals Soft and Smokey (though I do wish it had a gold shade.)
Reading this makes me want to purchase Soft Glam even more than I already did! I saw it in store and fell in love with the pigmentation and range of colors. I don’t own any ABH eyeshadows yet, but I see this in my future. Waiting for either the Fall VIB Rouge sale or the next time Ulta has 205 off prestige brands.
Christine, I would LOVE to see a look ideas post about these recommended palettes. OR even a tips and tricks type post (for example, I love Modern Renaissance but S-T-R-U-G-G-L-E with the ABH formula!)
I know you are always hard at work with the new things, but drumming up excitement about “old” makeup is so helpful for people trying to curb their purchasing and enjoy what they have.
