Marc Jacobs Beauty O(vert) (56) & Obey-ge (66) Highliner Gel Eye Crayons Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty O(vert) (56) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon
For summer, Marc Jacobs Beauty released a slew of new shades of his Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.). I reviewed a few here and here. I recently received two more shades that I hadn’t purchased already, so here they are! (Which also means I, unfortunately, caved and bought the three I was missing, because they’re like Pokemon–you gotta collect ’em all! Stay tuned!) If you’re unfamiliar with the formula, it’s a pencil eyeliner that is supposed to be “waterproof, long-wearing, [and have] color-intense payoff.”
Marc Jacobs Beauty O(vert) (56) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “forest green.” It’s a medium-dark, almost blackened, green with cooler green shimmer over a warmer, more olive-y green base. It had mostly opaque color coverage in a single stroke, and it was buildable to slightly richer color. It wore well for nine hours on my lower lash line before starting to thin. The consistency is creamy, easy to apply, waterproof, and comfortable to wear. Somehow, the brand has managed to balance cool and warm to create a green that’s not quite like other “forest greens” I have in my stash. MAC Devotion (P, $20.00) is cooler-toned. Urban Decay Loaded (P, $19.00) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Forever Green (P, $16.00) is lighter, warmer. bareMinerals 10AM (LE, $15.00) is warmer. Bobbi Brown Hunter (P, $24.00) is much, much darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Obey-Ge (66) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “pearly pale pink.” It’s a very, very light pink–almost like a pink-tinged white–with a shimmering, slightly metallic, finish. It is nowhere near opaque, and it doesn’t build to opaque color at all. The color works well on the lash line to brighten without being as stark as pure white, but it is shimmery enough that those with sensitive eyes may find it irritating on the water line (and I don’t think it is technically safe for the water line). It lasted for eight hours on me before it began to thin. Tarina Tarantino Broken Doll (P, $15.00) was the only similar shade I could think of, and it has more of a pearly finish, rather than noticeably shimmery, but the color is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

the O(vert) ( 56) is a beautiful green. Love those greens.
Me too! I love how well-balanced it is.
The Forest green shade is really pretty! 🙂
I liked that one a lot, too!
O(vert) looks very pretty! kind of shade im attracted to!
Shades like it are great with your coloring!
Overt is so pretty, but I don’t like olive tones on myself personally. 🙁
Awww!
I loveeee olive liners and O (VERT) is stunning shade to try 😀
i keep looking at liners often and am hoping you picked Mari(GOLD) 😀 it looks stunning on sephora site 😀

Obey-ge (66)!!!! I can picture myself wearing that shade!
Yay!!
Whoa! Your swatches are SO DIFFERENT from mine! Broken doll is nowhere close to Obey-ge which is more like a very opaque combination of flash duochromes, violet pink, champagne pink, Pearl, and total photonic iridescence! Such a color cannot be duped and was opaque as immediate in a single swipe for me! Wow! Did you get a dry one? O(vert) is just enchanting as well and I truly think that these show uniquely different on everybody and are not dupable at all. Perhaps trying to describe them, it’s helpful to use other colors of things to more closely reveal how it shows.. But these are just too darn good to replicate. My HGs of eyeliner! (Most impressive thing of 2014) 😀 Im so glad you caved as well!!!! 😀
In the MJ Beauty category, can you please add the Plumage and Midnight blue highliner cel eye crayons? They are missing. 🙁 Thank you! 🙂
Oh, and Brown out. 🙂
It wasn’t dry for me, just sheer.
According to hundreds of others, it was found quite a creamy opaque pastel of beautiful unique color rather obvious. It’s ashamed to get makeup from different places or just perhaps an older version, because that does not give honest color swatches for everybody. Like the blue recently reviewed, it, just like the jazz(berry) you thumbs down, performs well and is a favorite of many! ^_^ some get an old pencil, the company responds immediately. I love your site, yet recently sent out if my comfort zone to own all of these after thorough testing of them and comparison to TT’s liners, and I made a huge investment in things I would not use my words to describe as stellar if they were not. Please just give the option for others to be reminded that this isn’t the end all be all said about a product. Underrated.
I bought mine from Sephora online – like any other legitimate customer. I’m not buying these in some shady or underhanded fashion. I’ve consistently had pigmentation issues with various shades of the brand’s eyeliners, and I’ve bought them since they’ve launched — multiple orders as well as press samples that have under-performed.
I believe Temptalia readers are a very smart and savvy lot and are more than aware that my review is just that – my review; I do not speak for anyone but myself and my experience. I don’t think you have to invalidate my experience because you had a different one – I am always happy for someone else who experiences something better or disappointed when someone experiences poor results when I’ve had good ones. I don’t try to minimize their experience, and I would appreciate it if you would give me the same courtesy.
I’m sorry you feel that way, as I’ve credited you for my own choices and brilliance in this remarkable site, yet talk a bit much about a product, a large percent who commented on,.. They said that, specifically due to your review, or their minds change. I could have done that and I’m glad I did not. I’m saying though I value you & respect your own experience and what you do for all, others shouldn’t defect something “just because.” It’s your positivity and sharing with others I admire most and I’m quite apologetic if I’ve come across anyway else.
Your comment that I’m providing dishonest swatches and insinuation that I’m buying products in an underhanded fashion really didn’t come across as respectful, so I appreciate you clarifying! 🙂 Perhaps, in the future, you might focus on sharing your personal experience without dismissing mine or other readers’ experiences at the same time – that is the beauty of comments, so that readers can chime in with their own thoughts, positive or negative, agreeing or disagreeing, but in a way that builds discussion and doesn’t put others down or make them feel as if they cannot share their opinion with equal measure. Thank you again!
You’re welcome! 😀
What’s up with these names? Obey-Ge? Obey-Jee? Obey-gee?
It’s making my teeth hurt!! 😉
I’m thinking it’s a play on of Obey and “beige.”
These look lovely – I love the packaging!
Yay!
Ooooh O(vert) looks gorgeous, and quite unique, too.
Surprisingly so!
I love O(vert) but for 30 – yes, THIRTY DOLLARS Canadian, I can love one of the less expensive near dupes just fine. That is a really whopping price for an eyeliner (albeit a nice one). 25 dollars is bad enough but THIRTY????
And a mere 0.01 oz. at that. One of those things you can’t think about too intensely.
I really like O(vert)!
Me too!
I love O(vert). I need to try these pencils soon.
I hope you can try ’em!
Haha, Obeige will be actually invisible on my skintone, LOL! The pink pencil is pretty though!
The green is pretty too – sometimes I fantasise about having brown eyes so I could look awesome in those greens, hehe! (Not that I wouldn’t wear them now)…
I could see it disappearing on lighter skin tones!
I so cannot ignore anything olive and this looks like a beaut! Well, duh, of course it is on the list 😀
Haha! 😉
I bought O(vert) last week because I saw it in you, and it looked lovely. Thanks Christine. You never steer me wrong.
So glad you love it! 🙂
Too bad Obeyge was such a let down. Could have been brilliant.
Agreed!
Overt is pretty! I’ll probably pick that one up and maybe the purple one. Haven’t tried any makeup by Marc Jacobs yet but I love his clothes and these pencils look promising.
I hope you give ’em a try, Denise! Let me know how it goes!
Not only is Obey-ge not opaque, but on my very fair skin you practically can’t see; only the sparkle really makes it visible. Tarina’s works well though, at least it’s pigmented enough!
That was Sylirael’s comment, too – that on her skin tone, it would be invisible! Looks like you’ve confirmed 🙁
These eyeliners are amazing! I’m tempted to get rid of all my UD liners and use these exclusively. They really do last! I am anxiously awaiting your review of Plum(age). I want a long lasting purple eyeliner and this would be perfect as long as it’s not too red. Keeping my fingers crossed.
If you have someone who would love ’em, sounds like a good plan, but otherwise, if they work for you, I wouldn’t just trash ’em 😉
Hmmm, I’m thinking O(vert) would look fantastic with MAC’s new Lorelei eyeshadow! I think I see another Sephora order in my near future, lol.
I bet it would!!
Overt.. is a beautiful green.. so pigmented!! like the packaging of these liners.
I agree! It’s so nicely pigmented!
Hi Christine 🙂 This liners look nice! How they compare to the By Terry Ombre Blackstar ones? (if you have both :))
I don’t have those, unfortunately!
Obey-ge is such a great shade, too bad the quality isn’t great.
Total shame!
Oh, sigh. I like Obey-ge more, but that grade..
I hear ya 🙁
Read Sephora, Google.. Many loved this shade and used it in their weddings as the light pink/pale purple creamy shimmer color all over! More for others.
Looks like Estee Lauder Cyber Green in pencil form.
I can see the similarity!
