Makeup Geek Whimsical Foiled Eyeshadow
This post features three of the new Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow ($9.99 for 0.064 oz.) shades that have just been released. The formula is supposed to be a cross between a cream and powder eyeshadow that has “intense pigmentation” with a “smooth, silky formula.” The brand has said that the formula may be prone to creasing on oilier lids and recommends a primer. The color payoff of these shades ranged from mostly opaque to fully opaque with dense, thick, creamy textures. The wear was actually shorter when used over primers like Urban Decay Primer Potion and NARS Smudgeproof than it was without any primer or base; when I tested with MAC Painterly Paint Pot, I had the longest results, though shorter than I typically get with Paint Pots.
Makeup Geek Whimsical Foiled Eyeshadow ($9.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “light silvery pink with a foiled finish frosted silvery pale pink.” It’s a very light pink with subtle cool undertones and a frosted, metallic sheen. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that was easily built-up to full coverage on the lid once blended and worked into the skin. The color lasted for seven hours on bare lids, five and a half hours over NARS/Urban Decay primers, and nine hours over MAC Painterly. Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) (LE, $6.99) is a cream product, darker. Chanel Tisse Rhapsodie #2 (LE) is less metallic. Too Faced Pink Frosting (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Harpooned Heart (LE, $16.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever I902 Quartz (P, $21.00) is less metallic. Make Up For Ever I528 Pearl (P, $21.00) is less metallic. Milani Bella Pink (13) (P, $4.49) is darker. MAC Violet Blend #1 (LE) is darker. Laura Mercier Diamond Pink (LE, $23.00) is similar. Tarina Tarantino Delightful #3 (P) is similar. Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #2 (LE) is similar. Tarina Tarantino Diamond Dusk #2 (LE) os similar. Kat Von D Instaglam (LE) is warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Enchanted #1 (LE) is cooler-toned. MAC Fresh & Mint #2 (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Young Venus (LE, $20.00) is darker. bareMinerals Muse (P) is less metallic. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Makeup Geek Daydreamer Foiled Eyeshadow ($9.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “light lilac purple with cool undertones and a foiled finish cool light lilac purple.” It’s a cool-toned, light-medium lavender purple with a metallic sheen. It had nice pigmentation that went on very smoothly and evenly, and it was easy to blend out on the skin. It started to crease after seven hours on bare skin, five and a half hours over NARS/Urban Decay primers, and nine hours over MAC Painterly. Urban Decay Tonic (P, $18.00) is warmer, pinker. Kat Von D Astrological (LE) is less metallic, lighter. Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #4 (LE) is lighter. MAC Tropica (LE, $21.00) is less metallic. Urban Decay Grifter (P, $18.00) is pinker. NARS Marie-Galante #1 (LE, $24.00) is darker. MAC Light Violet (LE, $32.50) is more sparkly. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Makeup Geek Masquerade Foiled Eyeshadow ($9.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “bright medium plum with warm undertones and a foiled finish bright warm plum.” It’s a brightened, pink-based purple with warmer undertones and a frosted sheen. This shade wasn’t as metallic as others in the range. It had fairly good pigmentation with a soft, creamy consistency that was easy to blend on the skin. It lasted for seven and a half hours on bare lids, six hours over Urban Decay/NARS primers, and nine hours over MAC Painterly. MAC Frizzyplum (LE, $16.00) is more muted, warmer. ColourPop Dare (P, $5.00) is purpler. ColourPop Fantasy (P, $5.00) is more sparkly, brighter but isn’t eye safe. Ardency Inn Orchid (P, $21.00) is brighter but isn’t eye safe. Make Up For Ever ME912 Orchid (P, $21.00) is lighter but isn’t eye safe. NARS Rage (LE, $24.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Fishnet (P, $18.00) is lighter, less shimmery. MAC Power Boosted (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Stars ‘n’ Rockets (P, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Femininity (LE, $32.50) is lighter, more sparkly. Sugarpill Magentric (P, $13.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

I just don’t think I like these eyeshadows. I have two and was not impressed with them at all, despite that the two colors got positive reviews. I’ll have to only wear them wet to enjoy them now.
Do they not work dry at all for you, Cat? I think I’ve only used one or two wet, because dry application has been so intense, lol!
I can see why this would be a love/hate formula, though, for sure.
Which were the intense shades? I don’t own any makeup geek and would like to try only a few out to see how I like them.
Hi Mina,
Please read through the reviews – almost all of them are very pigmented! 🙂
Those look great! I really like daydreamer!
Nice!
As someone with oily lids I can say these are not oily friendly on me even with painterly paint pot(first ten anyway), the only thing that really worked to give me around 2-4 hours wear(on the lids) was rimmel scandal eyes nude eye liner. As a crease shade they lasted better but as a lid they just didn’t hold up.
Bottom Line/my point for those with oily lids I suggest using rimmel nude eyeliner as a base/primer.
The best you were able to get was only 2 to 4 hours, JJ? That is really awful. 🙁
Daydreamer really creases quicker over primer than on bare skin? What a disappointment, because that’s the one I wanted most!
All of them crease faster over UD PP/NARS Smudgeproof vs. bare skin, but they all wore longer over MAC Painterly.
So strange! Alas, I’m not about to buy something that would make me change my routine! I have dupes though, so I’ll have to be content!
I totally understand that! 🙂
I love Masquerade and the purple eye look you did!
Thanks, Katherine!
I just these in the mail over the weekend. I can’t wait to play with masquerade!
How fun!! 🙂
OMG, too pretty! What do you like better, Christine, Urban Decay’s Tonic or Daydreamer? I don’t see any difference.
I like Tonic, because it is more of a duochrome so there’s more shift in it 🙂
I thought Masquerade was a purple, but it’s more magenta. I have both the ColourPop dupes, so I’ll cross that off my list. I have dupes for the other two, but I do think they’re quite pretty.
Yay for dupes 🙂
I had wanted a few of these but after seeing your second eye look, it reminded me a lot of what I usually put together with my UD Fun Palette. Thanks for saving me some $! 😀
No problem, Jenny! 🙂
Masquerade looks like MAC Stars & Rockets on some serious STEROIDS! As for Daydreamer, I will be buying the UD dupe for it: Tonic.
Definitely! 🙂
Some killer looks here Christine! I may have to re- look at these. It seems they might be getting close to some decent purple shades which seems t be a difficult thing to do.. My natural eyelids are normal to dry But, I wear a pretty emollient eye cream. So, I would probably use a paint-pot to the crease and maybe just diffuse it up a bit.
Thank you, Nicole! 🙂 Paint Pot should help a lot!
For those into pink and purple colours – these are beautiful. Love your eye looks Christine – so creative.
You’re always so kind! Thank you!
I am so glad to see A’s for the purple shades in collection, for once! These are on their way to me and UD Tonic will be once it’s back in stock! (Ardency Inn Royal too, if it EVER comes back in stock at Sephora).
Fingers crossed Royal comes back in stock soon!
I don’t have painterly anymore, do you think these would work over a shimmery paint pot? I was going to use them over a regular primer but not anymore… I’d hate to get through only the morning!
I think it would be okay over a shimmery Paint Pot!
Yay! 🙂
How close is masquerade to loreal infallible in burst into bloom? also what do you think are the closest dupes to these three colors? I do not think the foiled shadows will work for me but love these three colors.
They’re very different. Burst Into Bloom is much pinker and lighter. Please check the Dupe List for each shade – they are all rated by similarity there 🙂
Oooh these look SO pretty together! Very fairy tale like, I love it. Daydream really is something.
Even with the names!
Another great set of shadows from MUG, that look glorious on you. Maybe I ought to ask this elsewhere, (But MUG isn’t exactly notorious for answering questions…)
But, all you science nerds/nerdettes: what on earth accounts for a shadow with shorter wear time over primer, and longer on bare skin/standard skincare? I guess I am asking which ingredients, basic to each (primer/MUG foiled) do not bind? You have to admit, it’s kind of paradoxical and unexpected.
Here are the ingredients if it helps — my books are telling me the first is probably one reason:
Triethylhexanoin, Dimethicone, Magnesium Myristate, Magnesium Carbonate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Aluminum Oxide (Alumina), Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin | May Contain: Mica (CI77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxides (CI77491, CI77492, CI77499), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI77510), Carmine (CI75470), Tin Oxide (CI77861)
Such gorgeous looks! It’s good to know that Daydreamer and UD’s Tonic are so similar — thanks 🙂
No problem, Fran! 🙂
A frosty metallic pale pink is pretty much the last eyeshadow I would ever want, lol, but I looove the lilac one! Masquerade is interesting, too.
Glad you liked one for sure 😀
Hi! I’m looking for a nice lighter or dusty purple in the MUG line to complement Drama Queen (dark sparkly purple). I think Day Dreamer will pair with it nicely! What do you think?:)
Initially had my eye on Unexpected, but many reviews mentioned that it lacked pigmentation and applied patchily..
I think Daydreamer would work! 🙂
