Makeup Geek Groupie & Backstage Foiled Lip Glosses Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Groupie
Makeup Geek Groupie Foiled Lip Gloss ($15.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark pinky-red with bright, fuchsia pearl. It had medium, buildable coverage that was mostly opaque after two layers. The consistency was thicker but not heavy, so a second layer was still comfortable and did not get goopy. The color went on beautifully with smooth, even coverage that lasted for six hours.
The Foiled Lip Gloss formula is supposed to wear for “six hours” with buildable coverage (“single swipe for … translucent pop of color” or “multiple layers for … opaque color”). The texture was thicker but not goopy or heavy with a moderate tackiness. They lasted from five to seven hours on me, and they were comfortable to wear and were just barely hydrating overall. The pigmentation ranged from medium to semi-opaque in one pass, and then the glosses were buildable to mostly opaque to opaque.

Backstage
Makeup Geek Backstage Foiled Lip Gloss ($15.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a rich, dark purple with subtle, warm undertones and fine violet and plum pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one layer, which was buildable to mostly opaque coverage with two layers. There was a bit of color that slipped into my lip lines, but it went on fairly evenly otherwise. This shade stayed on well for six hours and was lightly hydrating.

Backstage is very impressive for such a deep, gothy shade! Most lip products with this depth have a habit of going on so unevenly and splotchy, but not this one. I love it!
I agree, Nancy! It is hard to get this level of coverage/evenness in dark shades, particularly for a gloss.
I love the shine on these!
Me too! They are shiny!
Love the Becca Prismatic Amethyst on you! Now I want it…
Thanks, Lisa!
Oh wow!! Thank goodness Backstage is permanent, can definitely see myself picking that one up in fall/winter! A nice rich purple in a gloss for the dry winter months
I like that they’re permanent, too!
This sounds like a pretty good formula, and there are a couple of shades that interest me, but just like the lipsticks, I wish the price was a little closer to the $10 mark — even if you got a little less product. I guess I just need to get used to MUG’s new pricing levels. Every newer product release has been closer to midrange than drugstore prices.
Yeah, I’d say you just have to adjust your idea of Makeup Geek as mid-end as Marlena mentioned that they aren’t trying to be “drugstore” pricing, but I totally understand where you’re coming from!
I like both of the glosses. I migh actually have to order some stuff from MUG after seeing these two. I have dupes for Groupie, but none of them are quite as shimmery. Lovely, fun lip products.
This gloss formula is fun – there aren’t too many like it!
When I saw Groupie, I think I made a noise like Homer Simpson. “OoooOOOOH!”
lol!
Groupie is gorgeous. I had planned to stay away from the MUG lip products after the lackluster reviews of the plush mattes (and the plush creams do not really come in any must have shades for me). But I think Groupie is must have for me. I have The Rabbit and Pink Ruby but neither of those come close enough to this one to make me not want it.
I like these so far! 🙂
Is Groupie a dupe of Urban Decay Big Bang or Jeffree Star Dream House? It looks nice, but the Makeup Geek liquid lipsticks seem like they were disappointing overall… :/
I’m presuming you are talking about their liquid lipsticks? These are glosses, not liquid lipsticks, so they don’t dry down matte.
OMG, I might need both. Groupie is like firebird on steroids. Backstage is also lovely and I could see it working for both alone wear and topping off another dark lipstick used as a stain.
Groupie is impressive — too bad I can’t stand lip glosses.
I love Groupie!
