MAC Technakohl Liners
MAC Technakohl Liners

MAC Technakohl Liners ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) are supposed to have a “soft and creamy” formula with “intense, rich colour deposit” while being long-wearing (specified as eight hours) and smudge-proof. Most of these were disappointing with sheer color payoff that was only somewhat buildable and shorter (six hours) wear.

MAC Whirlpool Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “dark deep blue.” It’s a bluish-teal with subtle green tones and a pearly sheen. It had sheer pigmentation in a single stroke, and it was only somewhat buildable to semi-sheer intensity. The consistency was very waxy, so while it didn’t feel sharp or dry against the lash line, it still tended to skip. This shade lasted for six and a half hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Take the Plunge Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “deep ocean blue.” It’s a medium-dark blue with a hint of “warmth” that makes it almost a blue-teal (but I think it is quite blue). It is very creamy and prone to “breaking” and leaving chunks of product when applied, so use a very light pressure when applying to avoid this. It had good color payoff, but it doesn’t like to be layered as it will cause the product to push onto itself and look somewhat uneven. This looked softened and blown out after six hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Vent Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “metallic lime.” It’s a muted, medium-dark green with subtle golden warmth and a metallic sheen. It had sheer coverage in one pass, and it was semi-opaque after a few layers. It, too, had that waxier consistency that made it sheerer but not dry (though it looks that way due to the poor pigmentation). This shade lasted for six hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Cool Jazz Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “navy blue.” It’s a medium-dark, brightened navy blue with a satin finish. The consistency was slightly dry, fairly waxy, and prone to skipping. It had semi-sheer color coverage in a single pass but was buildable to mostly opaque color coverage. It started to smudge after six hours (looked blown out). See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Metalhead Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “greyish metal blue.” It’s a muted, blackened blue with a pearly shimmer. It had very sheer pigmentation in a single pass, which I was able to build up to semi-opaque color coverage with four or five layers. It looked quite faded and softened after six hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Cast Iron Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “elephant grey.” It’s a muted, bluish-gray with a satin finish. It was waxy and sheer, though I was able to build it up to semi-opaque color coverage with several passes. It wore well for seven hours before it faded. At least this shade was more unique, though the formula is still disappointing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

You bought these! Just when the press samples could have come in handy. How does MAC feel about returns on 30 eyeliners…?
Think of all the money you saved people like me …who saw those gorgeous marketing photos and thought “wow, if only I wasn’t already so broke from black friday, F&F sales, etc”. Thanks!!!
These underwhelm.

I think customers should return products that don’t work for them, so I don’t have a problem with returns 🙂 For me, though, I bought them for reviews and whether they work out or not, it’s more like “onto the next” for me, so it’s not a big deal either way. I’m happy (and very lucky) to do it, and it is part of running the blog, so please don’t feel bad! Luckily, most products aren’t as bad as these (on the whole).

Yes, thank you for keeping us from wasting money. I never buy anything without checking your reviews first. My google search even knows to automatically add temptalia at the end when I’m typing up “product x brand y … temptalia”. 😀

These look HORRIBLE! I think you should return these and get your money back. I don’t know how these even made it out of the Quality Control. They should not be selling these at all. They have 27 shades already, and nobody will miss these 5. Why not just come out with 5-10 great to good ones, and skip the rest? More is not better

So sad, especially because the price is fairly reasonable. But there are so many good formulas out there nowadays, it’s impossible to justify buying mediocre liners now 🙁

So sad… Vent looks really cool, I love that kind of color.
I don’t understand why they launch a whole series of a product that has such bad color payoff.
I mean they test those don’t they?

Thanks for the review, it sure saved me some money 😉

These are my colours – but the ratings are so bad I am not interested. I have Emerald from Revlon and I find it OK to use. Bu that darling Junkie from Urban Decay is irresistible. I adore that Gucci Iconic Ottanio that you love Christine as well. Now these are well worth the price.

So disappointing. I actually WANT to buy some of these from MAC but looking at how poorly some of these perform…it’s breaking my heart. I actually thought MAC would’ve stepped up their game with these for some reason. Maybe something to do with how awesome NARS Audacious lippies are and that consumers won’t stand for poor quality…how wrong I was!
