MAC Viva Glam Nicki Lipglass ($15.00 for 0.17 fl oz.) is described as a “hot pink.” It’s a brightened medium pink, kind of strawberry-pink like, with subtle yellow undertones. It’s not quite bright enough to be a true hot pink–at least not on lips, though it’s brighter in the tube than on. MAC Please Me is lighter, while Illamasqua Indulge is darker and brighter.

The color coverage is mostly opaque with a little translucency here and there. It does settle into lip lines somewhat. Lipglasses feel a little thick, and they are definitely tacky, so they are not everyone’s cup of tea. They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste. Viva Glam Nicki lasted five hours on me.  It’s a little lighter, not quite as yellow-toned, as its lipstick counterpart. Since it’s been awhile, and I did want to show the gloss layered over the lipstick, I also included standalone lipstick swatches as well as the two layered.

MAC fan or not, Nicki Minaj fan or not, MAC’s Viva Glam campaign helps fund an organization that does a whole lotta good–the MAC AIDS Fund. Every cent of the selling price of Viva Glam products goes towards MAF. From the press kit they currently have available on their website, they were heading towards a $250 million goal for this past July–but as of February 2012, they had raised $235 million from the Viva Glam Lipstick and Lipglass shades. 100% of the sale price–not proceeds, profits, or an ambiguous figure–every cent. MAF provides financial support to organizations across the world to provide a range of services that include preventative care for HIV/AIDS as well as care for those with HIV/AIDS.

I would say the gloss is more wearable (if you don’t LOVE your brights), though the lipstick has a texture more will find comfortable. Lipstick is a bit brighter – you could always wear a thin layer of it and mix with clear gloss to dupe the lipglass.

How did I miss this?? Probably too excited for the Azealia Banks lipstick, LoL. Thanks for the review Christine! Kudos to MAC for their quantifiable and continued efforts to fight AIDS.

On a side note, there seems to be a typo in the product links? Reads “hhttp”, so isn’t recognized by the server.

I just called the MAC counter at the Macy’s near me (Hayward, CA) and was told the release date is next Thursday, Sept. 13 but that they will be pre-selling them starting tomorrow, Sept. 6. Are these dates usually dependent on the individual counter/store?

I love the lipglass, the lipstick, not so much. The products combined seem quite too much for my taste. I wish they had released a lip pencil as well.

In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencil is a very similar color, it’s what I always wear with Nicki. Nicki also looks great with Cork (if you are lighter) or Chestnut (if you are darker) to help neutralize it a little. Cork + Nicki lipstick + Viva Glam V Lipglass = pretty soft nude pink lip!

Gorgeous shade and a great cause. Viva Glam is one of the reasons I am loyal to MAC. I’ll buy this even though I’m kinda disappointed in Nicki lately 😛

Wenz Avatar

This is one of the only cosmetic launches I close my eyes and buy! It is a great cause. Whether I like or don’t like color I still buy it. I can always gift to someone, so its totally worth it.

Christine, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST!! I was going to donate $35/month to sponsor a child in need (I’m still going to do that!) with my own money earned from work, and when I saw that 100% of money from these lip products also go to charity, I MADE MY FIRST EVER MAC PURCHASE!!

I am SO excited, so thank you for this blog post! I got to buy my first ever MAC, and the money’s going to charity ^^

By the way, can you please let your readers know in your next MAC post that if ordering online, the code word ‘TXT’ gives you free shipping, no minimum purchase? I saw it on retailmenot 🙂

Christine, every time I put this lipstick on I want to like it so much, but the color is spotty and splotchy and looks awful. Any tips on how to get it to look nice and smooth like you did in the pictures?

Laia Avatar

Actually something similar happens with me… it looks patchy and doesn’t really adapt to my lips. It looks somewhat fake and at the end I have to tone it down because I might look like a very fake Barbie. 🙁

Rose Avatar

Christine,

Thank you for always being so diligent in reminding people of how awesome the Viva Glam program is. Of all the programs out there that give a portion of their sales to charities, MAC is the only one I have ever seen to give 100% of the price point, as well as, innovating and running the program 365 days of the year. I may not be jazzed by all their new releases, but I always pay attention when it’s a Viva Glam release.

Veronica Avatar

Shoot. I wasn’t going to buy any more lipgloss, but I do think this would look amazing over the original lipstick…ah well, might as well buy it just for the charity aspect. 😛

Tuss Avatar

I have a question. This is sold for 25 dollars where I live. Will only 15 dollars go to the good cause? Will they just keep the other 10 dollars?

Alice Avatar

Hi Christine,
thank you for your amazing reviews!
Will you suggest the Lipglass and the lipstick to a blonde girl, light blue eyed, with rose undertone skin?

Think about a nordic girl… but not so nordic (since I’m Italian, I don’t have a pale/fair skin), my mineralize skinfinish natural is Medium.

The Viva Glam line is the one MAC product I still feel comfortable spending money on. I love the Nicki lipstick (although I have to wear it very blotted down as when it’s fully loaded it looks TERRIBLE with my skin tone, haha!) so I’ll definitely pick this up when I have some spare cash.

Alyssa Avatar

I think I’ll have to get this! I wanted to get the lipstick but the color look too bright for me. The color of the lipglass looks a little less intimidating. And it’s for a good cause!

Boone Avatar

Thanks for this post! As someone who isn’t all that crazy about MAC, I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the Viva Glam line. Now that I know, I’ll be making an extremely rare trip to mac.com to pick up the lipglass!

Jenny Avatar

Hum… I don´t know why MAC described this as “hot pink” because to me it´s like a brighter baby pink more than hot pink. So dissapointed, because I saw the promo pictures and the color looks so bright and gorgeous in the tube, but then in the swatch is lighter and not so bright as I thought. Well, I guess more money for my wallet lol

Gabbie Avatar

Thanks for the review! I seen it online here and had to go to my local Macy’s store to buy it. This was my 1st purchase of a lipglass from MAC. I love how well it goes along with my Viva glam Nicki lipstick.

artemis Avatar

too bad it settles cause the color is really pretty. the lipstick is even prettier…if only it was pale >.<
i really like this cause, if i had my own money, i'd buy some of these lipsticks <3
