MAC Venomous Villains: Overall, Round-up, & Recommendations
MAC Disney Venomous Villains Collection: Overall, Round-up, & Recommendations
OVERALL, Venomous Villains has some excellent shades and textures; there were very few products that felt like misses and only a couple that disappointed. The majority of products had nice color pay off, soft/smooth textures, and many are flattering across multiple skin tones. There are a few repromotes, but with a collection as large as this, some might be relieved about that, LOL! There are also no stickers here–all of the characters are printed onto the packaging. I didn’t receive any of the boxes (so I don’t have ingredient lists either), but I’ve been told the sketches of the characters are on them to contrast with the more classic imagery on the actual products.
My favorite products are the must-haves I listed below, but the products that really stood out to me were: Strange Potion Lipglass, which looks stunning on lips, so wearable alone and beautiful against cooler and warmer skin tones; Bad Fairy Nail Lacquer, which is a dazzling duochrome polish that flashes red, copper, and gold; and Wicked Ways Lipglass, which makes lips look like one big, juicy cherrylicious treat.
For me, the nail lacquers were my favorite part of the collection, even if I was disappointed to find that two shades are exactly the same as two Orly polishes I swatched earlier this week. I just think this duochrome (or triple-chrome, I suppose) finish of glitter/glass flecks is incredible, and I’m greedy for more shades. Side-by-side, I could not tell the difference between the two brands; and in terms of application/wear, there was nothing to distinguish them from each other. It seemed like, perhaps, MAC took a minute or two longer to dry, but otherwise… identical. If Orly isn’t your style or unavailable (because it’s $10 vs. MAC’s $13 price tag) where you’re at, I fully recommend all three MAC lacquers in that instance.
I liked the lip products the most, because they brought out some shades that I don’t remember seeing before, and there is a good variety in the shade range–some bolder, fiercer shades just in time for fall but a few tamer shades, too. The most disappointing part of the collection (even before I saw it) was the lack of new pigments–not a one–because I am a huge pigment fan and collector, so I’m always jonesing for something new to add to the collection! Don’t get me wrong, the three shades they chose to include are nice, but two of them were just released a year ago. I didn’t think I’d see them again so soon! I will also completely agree with many of you that I fully expected to see Queen’s Sin launched in this collection. I’m thankful I have mine, but it would have been fun to dig it out again if it had been released!
If you fell in love with the mineralize eyeshadows from Style Black, I think you’re going to fall in love all over again with Maleficent’s Mineralize Eyeshadow Duos. They truly are gorgeous when used damp–very rich, lush colors and the texture is smoother and softer than any mineralize product I’ve swatched to date. I swear, I’m not yet a convert, but MAC makes these better every year–so maybe one day!
The Magically Cool Liquid Powders are cool indeed–to play with. I like them but am not in love with them as of yet–they can be a little powdery when they dry, so I prefer them best mixed into moisturizer or foundation (yes, you can do that!) or used with a brush like the 188 for a very soft, dewy application. If you’re near a counter or store, I totally suggest going in and sticking your finger in it and playing around–such an odd feeling! Cool! Liquid! The boy was confounded. 😉
One question I get asked before a collection launches is, “What is going to sell out?” It’s hard to predict sell outs when they’re not re-releasing a previously hot product (e.g. Mineralize Skinfinishes) or promoting something with such a unique design (e.g. Marine Life). It’s even harder when a collection is so large! First, I think more rather than less shades will sell out, if only because you have both Disney and MAC fans coming together; it is not exclusively MAC fans waiting to snag something. My best guesses for products with potential to sell out quickly are: Heartless Lipstick, Wicked Ways Lipglass, Hot House Lipglass, Bite of an Apple Blush, Violetta Lipstick, My Dark Magic/She Who Dares Mineralize Eyeshadows, Briar Rose Beauty Powder, and all three polishes.
Temptalia’s Recommendations
Must-haves: Wicked Ways Lipglass, Heartless Lipstick, Strange Potion Lipglass, Toxic Tale Lipstick, Vile Violet Eyeshadow, Violetta Lipstick, Bad Fairy Nail Lacquer
Nice-to-haves: Darkly My Dear Blush, Sweet Joy Eyeshadow, De-Vil Eyeshadow, Hot House Lipglass, Vainglorious Eyeshadow, Bite of an Apple Blush, My Dark Magic Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo, She Who Dares Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo, Formidable Nail Lacquer, Mean & Green Nail Lacquer
Skip: Innocence, Beware! Lipstick (dry), Sinister Lipstick (streaky), any dupes you have (see below)
Skip if…
- Skip DEVILISHLY STYLISH if you have LOTS OF NUDE GLOSSES; it’s a nice champagne nude gloss, but there’s nothing particularly unique/different about it that makes it a must-have amongst nudes.
- SWEET JOY if you have DREAMMAKER, CREME ROYALE, CREME DE MIEL. They are all very similar–pale, light yellow gold with a frosty finish. It has a lovely finish, but you may already have something like it in your stash.
- DE-VIL if you have COPPERING. They are incredibly similar.
- HER ALTER IMAGE if you have BEAUTIFUL IRIS — if you’re on a tight budget. They do differ noticeably, but it’s not a significant difference. It’s skippable if you have the latter, unless you’re a fiend for pale purples.
- VAINGLORIOUS if you have STAR VIOLET. They’re pretty similar.
- SHE WHO DARES if you have BLUE FLAME and you’re ONLY interested in the blue side–the green side is not dupeable by Blue Flame (or any of the Style Black eyeshadows).
- FORMIDABLE if you have ORLY GALAXY GIRL. They are exactly the same. ORLY is $10, MAC is $13, but MAC may be more accessible for some. You can’t go wrong either way–the product is fantastic.
- MEAN & GREEN if you have ORLY SPACE CADET. Same reason as above.
Don’t forget to…
Check your stash for CARBON (permanent), HOT HOUSE (from Strange Hybrid), VIOLETTA (permanent at PRO), MELON (permanent), BRASH & BOLD (from Makeup Art Cosmetics), PUSH THE EDGE (from Makeup Art Cosmetics), RESORT LIFE (from Lillyland), SLICK BLACK (repromote).
Recommendations by Skin Tone
Please note that this section is merely suggesting shades that would complement a particular skin tone better than other shades, but these lists are meant to be rather exhaustive of the entire collection; it’s not reflective of must-haves for your skin tone. When it comes to cooler/warmer skin tones, these are products that lean noticeably cool/warm and therefore complement the corresponding skin tone better (but it does not mean you can’t wear a warmer product if you’re cooler!).

Right now I have 15 things picked out which comes out to around $275.
I don’t think that’s so bad, but I’ll most likely narrow it down to the things I want more than the rest if I can.
I always buy at the store so hopefully whoever is working that day can handle my large order haha.
WoW!!! You answered every question I had!!! So detailed! =) Thank you so much for doing this!
YAY! Preemptive answering!
yup, I totally agree, awesome review, love the whole skin tone thing, wow you’re good LOL
Thanks, Sue!
christine, is toxic life a dupe for jazzed or something in the permanent line you think? sorry to be annoying, but i’m kinda peeved with mac right now with the price-raising so i’m trying to avoid them a little bit
Soooo not like Jazzed. Nothing in the permanent line really seemed like it to me. Vegas Volt, maybe, but I’d say that might be a little lighter/orange.
aw, looks like i’ll have to get over it then haha. thanks christine!
right now i want about 25 things (yikes)…and i think that the last time i check it was around 350…im loving the nail polishes which i convinced myself i didnt need but then i saw your swatches LOL so that put the price up a bit
I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!
the only collection I want ALL of in Malificent……
goodness, I’ll have to really sit down with this one and study it because it has lots of pretty things and I can totally see me spending $200. thank you so much Christine, this will make it so much easier to narrow my list down.
Happy to help, Sue 🙂
Okay, I’ve finally got my list together (still might change a bit, but i’m determined to keep it under $200;):
lipstick in Heartless
lipstick in Violetta
lipglass in Hot House
lipglass in Revenge is Sweet
nail lacquer in Bad Fairy
nail lacquer in Formidable!
nail lacquer in Mean and Green
beauty powder in Brair Rose
mineralize eye shadow in My Dark Magic
mineralize eye shadow in She Who Dares
you put SOOOOO much work into this… thank you for all that you do 🙂
Thanks, Beatriz 🙂
This is such a detailed post, I might have to read all the reviews in a few days… love everything you do though Christine!
Thank you, Amy!
I love the Maleficent portion. I think I want to get..
Revenge is Sweet Lipglass
Both Mineralize Eyeshadows Duos
All the Nail Polishes
Briar Rose Beauty Powder
and 2 (maybe three) Strange Potion lipglasses!!!
Thats about 165 with tax where I live!
Thanks Christine, after a long day at work this was a wonderful surprise!!!
Aw, happy to be able to surprise ya, Sandra!
This is a really detailed review. It is so helpful to see everything this early, so I can narrow it down to 3 or 4 things. Thanks so much!
I’m so glad I could help, Melissa 🙂
I’m not loving the new prices. Lipsticks and Lipglasses used to be $14.00 and now they’re $15.50? That annoys me. Luckily, there isn’t much I want from this collection. I’m mostly interested in the Maleficent and Evil Queen products. If MAC is jacking up their prices, I’ll be much more careful about my purchases.
imagine in canada it now almost 18$ and if u wanna talk money wise! canadian and us money are ALMOST ALMOST THE SAME ! like almostttt!!! and just check the difference canadian and american prices! n cry for me!! lol so u guys are definatlyyy super lucky still! no matter wat!!! and the ppl with the pro card *wish it was me* are even luckier! and ppl who work there! the luckiest!!!
I’m so surprised, hahahaha. I’m usually an eye girl, but none of the shadows caught my eye as much as the lip stuff! Holy cow, there are some amazing lip colors here.
I HAVE to have the Bad Fairy nail lacquer!!
I wan’t to thank you for this, respect for all the work you have put in it.
Thanks, Cindy! 🙂
Christine: Question? Strange Potion or Wicked Ways?
They’re so different, lol!
omg!! SOOOOOO much new coo, stuff! between this collection and the fabulous felines ones….i think this time MAC is taking it a bit too far…2 HUGE collections one after the other….
What a great surprise, Christine! Thanks a lot for the reviews. I’m loving most the bright lippies and nail polishes. I thought that I would not get that many items from this collection, but now I’m thinking of getting 17 of them!
No problem, Rita!
this collection is totally for me – cause make up is very fantastical. Sometime I’ll feel very girly and i’ll wear pink and sometimes i’d like to feel like i’m in mad men so i’ll wear a 50s look. So i’ll like being a villan – makeup wise! I’ll probably only get one or two pieces just cause of my budget but if i could i would get a lot more! i really like it!
Thanks so much for posting the background story and swatches on youtube!
You’re welcome, Dana!
Well this was unexpected! 🙂
There is a lot I want, but I think my husband my kill me if I buy a ton more. I would like Strange Potion and the Briar Rose Beauty Powder. I am still pining on the permanant line. I can’t keep up!
Thanks Christine for everything ,you always do such an amazing job. Quick question which I am sure has been asked I just cant find it- are the price changes set in stone and is it for this collection only or even the permanent items, will pan e/s price go up to? My MUA told me no price increase till Feb 🙁
Thank you, LH! I believe these prices are for this collection only. Eyeshadows already had their price increase this past February, and a few more products got their annual increases on August 1st (lipstick/lipgloss are now $14.50 instead of $14).
Thank you. Try and rest/have some fun today I know you are prob swamped due to VV 🙂
No time to rest! Gotta make sure tomorrow’s posts are in order since I have school, lol!
Sorry to hear that and thanks I look forward to the new post tomorrow you do to much. Have a good first day back at school.
Right now I’m definatly going to buy
Heartless lipstick
Sweet Joy eyeshadow
Her own devices Beauty powder
Vainglorious eyeshadow
Oh so fair beauty powder
Truth and Light Magically cool liquid powder
Dark Deed Lipstick
Briar Rose Beauty Powder
Devishly Stylish Lipglass
Bite of an apple blush
Strange Potion Lipglass
🙂
This looks like an awesome collection and I will deff. be getting some goodies. I have a question for everyone, this is completely unrelated but how much money should I bring to imats NYC??? I want to buy quite a few things but I’m not sure how much to save?
Some places take credit cards, like MUFE. I’d probably bring maybe $200-300 in cash? You can check the vendor list and try to make a wish list, then add it up and see how much to save up.
im going to try and save atleast 400-500 just to be on the safe side.
Thanks so much, this narrows down to 18 items.
I got my final list
Violetta Lipstick
Wrong Spell Lipglass
Strange Potion Lipglass
Bite Of An Apple Blush
Wow! What an amazing post Christine! I saw this right before I went to bed and it got me so excited I couldn’t fall asleep!! Fortunately, I only want two things from this collection: Strange Potion l/g and Revenge is Sweet l/g : )
Thank you, Ludwig! 🙂
Im so looking forward to this coming to Norway! I love this collection:)
Thank you Christine so much!! Your opinion and swatches are always what ultimately helps me decide what to get! And it means so much to me that you posted these last night as soon as possible. The whole collection looks wonderful, and it’s so hard to decide what to get!
I’m so happy to help, Ashley! 🙂
Thanks for the review. Lucky you to be able to get this so early!
My Dark Magic and BoA Blush are going to be my must haves here. I love Wrong Spell and Dark Deed. Everything else (especially lippies) I cannot wait to swatch when I get to the counter.
You’re welcome, Stephanie!
you dont really talk about innocence beware! it looks really nice do you think it would look good on someone with fair skin?
It’s very drying – I mentioned to skip it actually in this post! It would work on fair skin, but I found the texture very dry.
thank you so much! now i know not to get it 🙂 could you recommend a mac pinky nude everyday type lipstick for me? I have fair skin and im new to makeup i dont know what to get!
What about Hue or Angel?
great review! i have a couple of questions:
– any dupes for heartless in permanent collection?
– if i have hipness and instant chic do i really need bite of apple?are they close?
– does beauty powder oh so fair similar to shell pearl?
– pigment push the edge: is it matte/satin/frost?
Thank you!
Hey Marina,
I can’t remember if I mentioned this in the Heartless review, but probably Ladybug. I don’t have it to do direct comparisons, though.
Bite of an Apple is a lot pinker and brighter than either Hipness or Instant Chic. It is closer to Hipness, but redder and way brighter.
Nothing in this launch is similar to Shell Pearl, IMO.
Push the Edge is frost.
I really loved this post! It’s so thorough and comprehensive, and it really answers every question that pops into mind. It’s an excellent round-up, but I think it’s a great INTRO too! You’ve come such a long way and it’s clear why you’re my favorite beauty blogger. Keep up the excellent work, Christine! 😀
Aw, thanks so much, Jenna 😀
I put together my list and it is around 260 dollars, not as bad as I thought it was going to be! I was really nervous when I was adding it all up haha! I am really bummed that there is not more for Dr. Dr. Facilier they should have give him a couple lipsticks or lipglasses not just a lip gelee from earlier this year! Anyways, thanks for all the info on this collection Christine!
No problem, Lauren! 🙂
why is everything a tad bit more expensive than other collections?
I’m just guessing, but probably because of licensing costs or something related to Disney and MAC working together.
i think i’m reading these posts backwards. did mac send you these mini samples? is there a way for any of us to mysteriously find them ahead of time?
xoxo
Y
PS–YOU ARE AMAZZZZZZZING
I went to a press event for the unveiling, and the press attendees received full collection samples – which is what is shown here 🙂 All posts have a disclosure notice at the bottom, FYI!
I’m definitely checking out Strange Potion lipglass and Bad Fairy nail lacquer… They look gorgeous!!
Hi Christine. I was wondering about the Canadain prices on the lipstick, lipglass, and eye shadows. I believe in Canada the prices for all three were recently raised from 16.50 or 17.00 to 17.50 and now just a month or so later the prices are being raised again to $18.50?! is this the price just for this collection because of the disney thing or are the prices being raised again? I’m confused. Please let me know and thanks so much for all the great info. i know we can always count on you!
Michelle
It is just for this collection as far as I know.
I’m so happy you were able to experience such an experience and even happier that you’re sharing with us. You’re f-ing amazing! Thanx Christine!
I’m glad I was able to share so much with everyone!
this is why I need to read before I hit the submit button. I can’t believe I wrote experience such an experience. I was so in awe of the posts I guess my brain stopped functioning. Thanks again 😀
lol!
I’m curious why they chose Dr. Facilier instead of someone like Ursula. I know this isn’t beauty related but it’s a little mind boggling. Maybe they were trying not to be gender-biased? haha.
I’m loving almost everything I see, so now I’m sitting with a calculator predicting what I call the “expected damage”, if you know what I mean.
Hey Christine! Thanks so much for all the great swatches, definitely helped me with my list.I was wondering if Bite of an Apple blush is similar to the coral part of Marine Life?
Much less orange!
How old do you have to be to attend an unveiling party? Do you have to be invited?Do you get to bring a guest? Lol you forgot Toxic Tale in the sellout list I remember just in the In the Groove collection Jazzed lipstick soldout so quick!
I don’t think there is an age requirement. I know they’ll card you and stamp your hand, since they serve alcohol.
Love this! Could you possibly do this for the Fabulous Felines collection? 😀
I don’t have that yet – I do review all MAC collections, but I can’t do anything until I’m able to buy the products for Fabulous Felines – really sorry I can’t do it earlier!
I watched BellaSugar’s video that you posted and she mentioned something about how the Magically Cool Liquid Powders would become part of the permanent line. Do you know if that’s true or not?
That’s what they said at the press event, but until I know when and how, I’m not 100% sold.
So would you suggest picking up a jar of it while it’s here? I think it’s beautiful, but I’m not sure.
I’d suggest trying it out – I don’t think it’s like OMG! It has a very cool texture/feel, but it feels more like a novelty.
You SO totally ROCK, Christine. Thank you for your time and recos!
Aw, thanks Melissa 🙂
looking at the entire collection, I said alot of OOhs and Ahhs, this is bad, VERY BAD! 🙂 I love the entire Evil Queen collection and the polishes are very pretty! Cant wait to see these in person 😀
Just wanted to say THANKS for all the wonderful pics and swatches! You’re amazing!
You’re welcome, Regina!
thanks for the very thorough review, as always!
i think i’m going to skip most of this collection…maybe just go play around with the mysterious liquid powder in store, and possibly check out the cruella lip products…
the rest left me feeling somewhat uninspired…
it might be easier on my wallet anyway, since i’m looking forward to the felines collection!
No problem, Aradhana 😀
Have you ever thought about featuring swatches on someone that is of a darker skin tone?
Hi Stephanie,
Unfortunately, I don’t know any body with a darker skin tone that would work for something like this. I would suggest checking out blogs like afrobella.com and scandalousbeauty.com for darker skin tones 🙂
Thanks for the suggestions and getting back to my comment. Just thought I’d inquire as your swatch listings are usually the earliest and most of the time, the most extensive, especially for MAC collections. Thanks again!
I should have some FF up next week… depending when Bloomingdale’s ships my order!
Wonderful review 🙂 Thank you! I’ve been able to cull back on my wish list from about $550 to about $350 now. My wallet is thankful 🙂
Happy to help, Christy! 🙂
i don’t really love this collection! hate those sticker like pressed pictures on the packaging!!!
well as always i will check this collection out as well when it’s in stores!
the only thing i do like from this collection is the maleficent collection, this one actually looks better than the others, even the pictures look better (maybe because they are darker so they fit the black standart packaging from mac)
What eyeshadows did you use for your eye make-up? From that collection?
Will share soon 🙂
what a great review. very informative. i will definitely be getting strange potion lipglass, bite of an apple blush, and bad fairy nail lacquer. still considering one of the beauty powders (probably briar rose), and the magically cool liquid powder is still tempting me…seems almost too cool to pass up. we’ll see.
Thanks, Jen!
This review was so so so helpful! Thanks so much
Now I need to start saving money 🙂
So glad I could help ya, Jessica 😉
I think what sells out first depends what the MAs recommend to their customers to buy before they sell out. Personally, I think Bite of an Apple Blush will sell out first!
Thank you so so much Christine. You are the best.
I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions i have about the beauty powders?
I am a NW20 and was wondering which one would be better Brier Rose or Her own Devices? Could I wear both?
Also is brier Rose similar to any of the two beauty powders that came out with Rose Romance? I have them both and don’t want dupes.
Thank you
I’d say Briar Rose, though either would be fine.
🙂 Briar Rose would be the only one that’s close, but Summer Rose (as you can see in the post) isn’t quite the same.
i thought i recalled you posting the face charts for this collection, but i cannot seem to find them now. was i just imagining that? if not, would you mind posting a link to where they are? and thank you SO much for the detailed preview!!
Nope, no face charts for this launch were posted yet!
I am so excited for this I want 11 things and the total is 217 dollars not including tax and I really want to buy everything with my own money so I am asking my mom everything I can do
I want quite a few things, but I’m a broke soon to be university student, so I’ll settle for the “My Dark Magic” mineralize eyeshadow duo. Oh, and sorry if this is off-topic, but how do I tell if my skintone is warm or cool? If any of this info helps, I tan rather than burn, I look good in both copper, silver and gold jewelery, and the veins near my wrist are green. Sorry this is so long, and thanks!
You sound warm 🙂
Thanks! I thought I was, but I figured I should ask an expert 🙂
hi christine, i hope you will reply this. i was wondering this because i didnt see wicked ways on any of your recommendations by skin tone. so my question is.. i probably like medium-with yellow undertone so is it going to work on me?
No, I think it could totally work for you! 🙂
This may be a bit late to ask (just got back from holiday :)), but do You think there’s a good dupe for Revenge is Sweet, in the permanent line, or well, any other line? 🙂
(although I might as well just get the MAC one then).
I just adore the picture of You wearing it, it’s so… jellyish and huicy looking. 🙂
I thought I wouldn’ care for this collection, but I think i’ll end up skipping most of, if not all F.Felines (and I’m totally a crazy cat-lady) and grab more of this one!
You might like MAC’s Lip Gelees — they have that juicy, jelly look! I believe Lancome’s Juicy Tubes are similar as are L’Oreal’s Colour Juices!
You’re so amazing Christine! You’re so detailed with everything, I love it.
Thank you, Arrianne!
Hei 🙂
I used some of your pictures for my blog. I named every picture and sign them with the direct link to your page. Hope this is fine for you! Feel free to contact me if you don’t want it! ( http://whitessnow.blogspot.com/2010/09/venomous-villains-iii.html )
Thanks,
Kathi
That’s fine, thank you!
being that i’m 17… we’ll see if i want to really blow as much money as i am planning ATM.
currently, i have narrowed it down to the following…
Cruella
1.wicked ways
2.devillishly stylish
3.heartless
Evil Queen
4.her alter image
5.vile violet
6.oh so fair
7.bite of an apple
Maleficent
8.revenge is sweet
9.violetta
10.briar rose
Hi Christine I was wondering if you could tell me what to expect at a preview party. I got invited to the VV one on the 21st and have never been to one before and am the type of person that likes knowing what to expect. Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA
You stand in line, get checked in, and when they have room for you, they let you in. (It’s a capacity issue I imagine, so they let more people in as others leave.) They usually serve cocktails (for those 21+) and appetizers. I forget if they stamp your hand if you’re 21 or not 21. They usually give you a postcard that lists the entire collection, so you can mark with a pen/pencil what you want and how much of it. You can also add permanent items, too, but the list itself is for the collection. Then you hand your list to one of the artists, who will grab your products and set them aside. While you wait for them to pull items, you wait in line to pay. Then you go home 🙂
All the products are on display, so you can mingle, swatch, and the like. Admittedly, I am a bit more determined and mark the list, hand it over, and pay. Mingle after, LOL!
I plan on ordering the things I want when it releases on the internet the first day – and yet I’m STILL biting my nails because I have to come home from school first! I highly doubt the things I want will be sold out THAT fast.
Hi Christine,
I have super pigmented lips. Do you think Strange Potion l/g would turn reddish on me? I like color on your lips, but I’m a little hesitant b/c it’ll probably look different on me.
Thanks
If you have naturally red lips, it’ll pull to a deeper coral. You could always pat on a touch of foundation or concealer to mute your natural lip color!
hmmm i just noticed you put toxic tale on the warmer and medium list.. i think u just saved me some more money as i’m light skin and cool toned, hehe 🙂
Would the Oh So Fair Beauty Powder, Bite of an Apple Blush, and Darkly My Dear Blush look good on NC30-NC35 skin tones? 🙂
Or would a different beauty powder be better than the Oh So Fair Beauty Powder? 🙂
I would pass on Oh So Fair, personally, it’s very light.
These are my recommendations for medium skin tones:
Best Picks for Medium Skin Tones: Darkly My Dear Blush, De-Vil Eyeshadow, Strange Potion Lipglass, Hot House Lipglass, Toxic Tale Lipstick, Vainglorious Eyeshadow, Vile Violet Eyeshadow, Bite of an Apple Blush, Violetta Lipstick, She Who Dares Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo, Briar Rose Beauty Powder, Brash & Bold Pigment, Melon Pigment, Push the Edge Pigment, Cajun Magically Cool Liquid Powder
Right now, I think I’m paired down to Bad Fairy and Violetta. Those were the two stand outs to me.
Alright, 3 things out of this whole collection that interest me! 🙂 Comes out to 48 bucks!
Darkly My Dear blush
Strange Potion lipglass
and Bad Fairy nail lacquer.
I was thinking of getting Innocence, Beware lipstick, but I already have too many nudes …but hmm… maybe? maybe not? LoL
I love both toxic tale lipstick and violetta lipstick, but I have fair skin, with somewhat dark lips. which would you suggest I get?
Violetta!
There are so many amazing things in this collection, and I’m sure I will end up spending entirely too much money! Right now, I know I’m going to go for:
Briar Rose Beauty Powder
Revenge is Sweet Lipglass
Sinister Lipstick
Formidable Nail Polish
Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain and definitely my favorite collection here.
Revenge is Sweet looks really nice in the package, but It didn’t really do it for me, for cover pay-off and what not
Have you swatched the Violetta lipstick from this collection vs. Violetta lipstick from the permanent pro line? There is actually quite a large difference, with the Violetta from this collection being pinker, glossier and deeper. I actually think it’s prettier, and although I already own Violetta from the permanent collection, I bought this one. If you get the chance to swatch the two, I would love to hear if you agree! I would hate for people to miss out on a really beautiful lipstick if they think they can buy it later or from the permanent PRO line. Thanks!
They’re actually pretty similar on me!
Hey Christine,
Do you think Truth and Light magically cool liquid powder would be good on a NC42 skintone?
I think it’d be OK, but it might be too light.
I can’t be sure until I get to test both for myself, but I think Star Violet and Vainglorious will show more of a difference on darker skin. I have dark skin and Star Violet, and it flashes more purple on me. Vainglorious looks like it might lean closer to flashing bronze.
But I have notes on my cheat sheets (thanks, again!) and my wish list narrowed down to about 6 items. Since I discovered palettes, I care far less about cute packaging (even for things I can’t depot, oddly enough). Otherwise, I’d be trying to “collect” all of it.
Hi Christine, I have pale skin but dark deep red hair, which kinds of colours would you recommend?
Check the list of recs for fair skin! 🙂
I placed my oreder on MAC website just now! I didn’t get everything I wanted because I wanted almost everything! But I did get the items I wanted the most. I thought the items would have sold out but they were all there. I can’t wait to get them!
As always… thanks for all the info. I always enjoy your picks and the information about what colors are similar to what you might already have. Always truly helpful to this MAC Addict!
well i was dying to get bite of an apple, and strange potion… but FUDGE!!! they were sold out! im hoping to snag them when nordstrom rolls theirs out… we’ll see! wish me luck
Macy’s is up now!
I pre-ordered my items at Nordstrom. I hope you get the rest of the items you want.
Thank you so very much for your detail in previewing this collection. I have not been able to wear make-up for over a year due to health issues. The return to the girly side of me could not have come at a more perfect time! These Disney Divas are my favorite characters! I want the boxes more than the makeup!!
I just bought Toxic Tale!! Sooo happy I found it in stores before it sold out. Phew. I find that it’s similar to MUFE Rouge Artist in 37, but TT is slightly more orange while 37 is more pink. Would you agree?
They are similar, yes.
I have really pale skin (NC15) which is cool toned, but I can also pull off warm tones. I bought Violetta and Heartless lipsticks (although I have no idea what to wear Violetta with. Any suggestions?!) and Strange Potion lipglass. Strange Potion is awesome! If you pair it with Warm Soul mineralize blush, they compliment each other perfectly, and off-set any color smokey eye.
could you tell me if bite of an apple has a lot of red tones in it, i love the coral part of marine life, but generally dont like red toned blush that look similar to my natural red cheeks. thanks
Yes, it’s very red.
When huge MAC collections come out how come each product doesn’t get a letter grade? Swatches and a full review are available but unlike w/other collections, there is no grade attached? I’m kind of confused. Is it because it is too large? I noticed with other collections, each product gets a grade but I noticed with MAC it is rare.
I don’t grade across product *types.* I prefer grading a single shade, not even just a general product type (like MAC lipsticks, for example). I find it pretty useless to do so, because if one eyeshadow is great, but the other is so so, then what, they get just a B? But what about that great product?
I don’t give out grades if I’m reviewing multiple product types (eyeshadow and lipstick together) or if there is too much variance between products (e.g. a sheer lipstick and an opaque lipstick) that are in the same review. MAC collections tend to be incredibly large, so it’s not feasible to review individual shades, while other brands may put out 5-10 products, which I can review in smaller chunks or individually. I don’t think people would appreciate it if I did 30-45 posts so I could hand out grades when I review everything in-depth, with swatches and comparisons anyway. Whenever I do review individual MAC products, I do give out grades. (See Pro Longwear Foundation, Nail Trend F/W Nail Lacquers, Pro Longwear Lip Cremes, Dare to Wear Lipglasses, MAC Digi-pops Dazzleglasses/Dazzle Lipsticks for a few recent ones.)
If I find that a product is consistent (say a nail polish collection, which I generally review together), I’m happy to hand out a single grade. If, however, there is a lack of consistency within the same product range, I’ll split it up — think back to the Milani baked eyeshadows. I just don’t have that luxury with MAC collections, given their size and frequency.
Personally, grades are only a summary, but the review is the meat. If you can’t get a feel for what kind of “grade” a product would get, then I’m not doing a very good job reviewing. If the grade is really important to you, I always invite you to just ask me 🙂
Hi christine! I bought the bite of an apple blush and i love the color but it is not very pigmented! I was shocked bc im very pale skined. I have to dig my brush in to get enough product. Maybe i got a bad one? Im so confused. Have you ever had that problem with any of your mac blushes before? Thanks
veronica
No, I haven’t had any trouble before… and definitely not with this shade!
Can you do a tutorial on how to use the mineralized eyeshadows?
Thanks for the suggestion!
thank you 🙂
i bought both mineralized eyeshadows and realized i dont know to use it.
Oh yes! Please 🙂
Any sug 4 something similar to Her Own Devices?????
Maybe NARS Dolce Vita.
What’s similar to Strange Potion lipglass? I really want it but that collection was long ago, it seems like, and I only got one eyeshadow 🙁 I love the color and the teeny tiny shimmer — I’m a sucker for things with very tiny shimmer. So gorgeous.
I haven’t found a dupe!
