Wow MAC has some awesome stuff coming out! I haven’t bought anything except what I use on a daily basis pretty much this whole year so this will be nice to indulge! The quads look gorgeous!

Oh my god. I missed out on the Pink pigeon last time. I definitely have to go out and get one before it runs out. Thanks Christine for the heads up. Happy Holidays!

I’d like to pick up a couple of the repromoted lipsticks I didn’t get when they first came out BUT am definitely turned off by MAC’s sexist crapolla, especially by a brand that touts ‘All ages, sexes and races’ (paraphrasing) as it’s motto. Just the first line, “Color is a vehicle for WOMEN to express their FEMININITY” of the press release is an immediate signal to every non-female or non-feminine makeup wearer that this collection isn’t for them. And that’s cool, but my money has plenty of other places to go.

Loving the look of some stuff (the eye shadow quads – big surprise), though looking at one of them is giving me flash backs to Caviar Dreams – looked gorgeous but didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I’ll wait and see what the reviews are like before diving in to this collection. It’s a shame but I have become so wary of MAC’s LE stuff, especially when they’re launching a tonne of things – it’s like they’re in such a rush to get 1,765 new products out in one month that the quality really suffers.

From what I can tell on my screen, the quads look like they can be closely (though not *exactly*) duped, even from within MACs permanant range.

I’ve only bough 2 quads, and both were horrible, with Caviar Dreams being one of them…

I’m having a weird disconnect here “femininity” is not usually seen as a “strong” attribute. So they say it’s a “strong women” collection (which has its own issues; I know there are men who wear makeup, or people who don’t identify as either gender) but talk about women flexing their femininity, which is not…usually what you get when you’re talking about strong, empowered women.

I want to be clear that I don’t think femininity = weakness, because it doesn’t, and I’m a total princess but also a feminist. But femininity usually has associations of soft and delicate and gentle, not…body-builder women flexing their muscles and wearin bright red lipstick.

I think maybe, in doing what they’ve done here, they’re trying–in their corporate way–to change that narrative, to say that feminine can absolutely be strong. I’m into it.

I just sincerely hope that this comment section doesn’t turn into a bunch of negative comments towards the model’s body. :/

I agree too! Truthfully, it’s kind of nice to see how gutsy MAC is. They know it can be misinterpreted (the pic, but I dont agree with the inconsistency with the wording that goes with) but they put it out there. That’s why for me, the brand stays sensational and intriguing.

I politely disagree! “Femininity” and “strength” go hand in hand to me. I think the model is supposed to serve as a metaphor for inner strength, and being a strong woman.

really because i am only slightly less buff than she is (jealous of her shoulders tbh) and just as much of a pretty princess as you are.

sometimes i wear lipstick when i lift and apparently you’d drop dead from the shock because for an alleged feminist you have some pretty ancient ideas of what and who can be feminine

Sorry but that’s a huge feminism fail on your part. Feminism is, among other things, about doing away with gender roles, specifically what traits are “feminine” and what are “masculine”. You’re just pushing gender roles along with that idea that “feminine” = “soft, gentle” and it’s not your place to pontificate on how other people are supposed to feel about their place on the gender spectrum.

If what you say is true… well I guess I can´t call myself a feminist anymore. I thought feminism was about both men and women being equally valuable as human beings, and having the same rights as people. I had no idea it was about doing away with gender roles that we humans have adopted since the most ancient times…in that case I guess I´m not feminist, since I have the ancient ideas of men being muscular and women being soft cute, with the Marilyn Monroe look. Oh well…

As a feminist, I hate it when people police feminism or break out the ol’-tried-and-true “That’s not very feminist of you…”

If femininity means Marilyn Monroe curves, shaving your legs, lipstick, AND getting equal say and equal pay while telling patriarchy to kiss your butt, I say good for you. So long as you’re not actively oppressing those who don’t express their femininity in that same way (men, women, and those in-between), then I’d say you’re still pretty darn feminist.

I think what you’re saying is just indicative of how media, especially cosmetic companies, advertise products sold and how they present the femininity associated with wearing makeup. I applaud MAC for this ad but let’s be real, the rest of the Spring 2013 ads are in the same vain of feminine. MAC is just a little more open about testing the waters; they aren’t sailing to a brave new world.
I’m sorry if anyone jumps down your throat about this. I don’t think you’re against a reinterpretation of the praxis of femininity.

I’m really not, and thank you. I was never trying to say that women *have* to be feminine or that femininity *has* to equal soft, pastel, pretty pink things. All I was trying to say is that the media tends to promote femininity *as* those things, and that you don’t generally see a media interpretation of “strong” women that includes a soft, pretty, pastel look. I mean, the whole MAC “Office Hours” collection, the images were a secretary putting on her makeup and filing and answering the phone. And those colors were very pink and pastel.

I absolutely think femininity can mean whatever you want it to mean, and women can wear whatever they choose. But there’s a reason we say “power red”. Who has a power pastel pink lipstick? (If you do, more power to you!) Bright colors are considered powerful, pretty and pastel is considered feminine. Again, I’m not trying to argue against it, I’m just pointing out the general media interpretation.

hey christine,
so MAC put out some conflicting info, but this collection will be available to freestanding stores only- not partnered locations as well- we just got a memo about it friday.
love the site and all you do!

The lipsticks! Now, let’s hope they are all at least B or above in rating. 🙂 Interested to see if the quads disappoint or not. Kind of an odd theme/promo image/wording, though.

I love the concept of this collection. I think MAC’s trying to embrace the numerous definitions/interpretations of “feminine” and “strength.” I don’t think MAC is being exclusionary here… As a track and field sprinter, I have a muscular body, and I can never really “identify” with most of the models that MAC or any other makeup company employs. I would describe myself as very feminine, but I also have a lot of muscle definition because of my training. I think MAC’s just making sure, in a lot of their collections and promos, to include all different kinds of people (like MAC Me Over, for example). It’s just marketing really, targeting women like me I imagine, such that we don’t feel left out ourselves! And I’ll be honest, it’s working, because I’m more excited about this collection than any of the others that have been announced for Spring 2013!

All that aside – I think people (like me) will be really excited that Feline is back out!! The nail lacquers look nice too. I just hope the quality doesn’t disappoint for these collections.

Also, many don’t realize ballerinas, the “epitome” (for lack of a better word) of femininity often look like this, as well.

They also say “Colour is ‘A’ vehicle for women to flex femininity”, not the *only* one…

Huh… The model pic kinda freaked me out a bit but the collection doesn’t look too bad. Nothing super special though so I will probably pass on the makeup. The brushes look nice though.

Jelena you look AMAZING!!! I mean wow. I am struggling through my second attempt at P90X right now (made it to the two month mark earlier this year). This image is added (and much needed) inspiration for me to continue changing years of my unhealthy habits (i.e., eating Oreos for dinner) and really get healthy.

You look AMAZING! I commented above to someone that there are a few women at my gym who are serious about body building and I envy the will power and determination to keep it so together and clean!! I feel horrible about the two giant chocolate chip cookies I just ate as my lunch :/

I’ve been weightlifting since my freshman year of high school and I know how much dedication it takes to create a body like that. It’s more than just dedication and patience, it’s an art form. Amazing work.

Super excited that Party Parrot is coming back with this collection! I wasn’t able to get my hands on it last time but I definitely getting it this time along with Absolute Power and Embrace Me. I might get Firm Form if it turns out to be sheer and use it over a lip pencil that I’d fill in my lips with.

I know, that’s how I feel when I walk by the MAC counter at Nordstrom on my way somewhere better. I know if I stop and look, it will be a bitter disappointment. Permanent blushes and brushes are okay, and I use studio fix. The limited collections, though, suck. And I like Urban Decay more for eyeshadows.

Holy cow, make Feline permanent already!! side note: I envy the dedication and hard work it takes women to build a body like this. With my small bones I think I’d look silly (I’m too tall and thin).

Christine thanks for posting this I’ve been looking for images for this collection for over a month and I’ve never been able to find anything. I cant wait for the swatches

Very excited about this one! Firm Form, wow! And am I the only one who gets some wonderful 1980s vibes from the promo? When they mentioned that “color is a vehicle [for women] to flex their femininity”, I immediately thought of Grace Jones, whom I worship 😀

I noticed that Jelena, the model for this collection, posts here: great job, Jelena! You look amazing!

OMG Jelena! Is it you??? Jelena Djordjevic/Abbou?

WOW! I started bodybuilding back 8 years ago because of you! I know you compete in Figure, always follow your competitions, but you gave me the inspiration to change. A cover from a magazine was all I needed 🙂 (I believe we chatted couple of times as well)

Now I am on my preparation towards my first bodybuilding competition (Finnish Nationals).

I am unbelievably happy to see that you made it to a big company such as MAC.

I hope that nobody turns this post into bashing Jelena’s body. She worked extremely hard to get where she is. It is a 24/7 lifestyle. And in the end, its each one’s choices. If you don’t like someone’s choices, work on yours.

This being said, I am very happy MAC promoted someone that has more muscle mass than average, it shows their diversity and willingness to go out of the box.

Whatever definition of strong is, everybody has their own. I suppose the point here is strong statement. I don’t know.

Any rate…its my first time posting. I read Temptalia everyday, as a make up artist, have to keep up to day, and you are my preferred source. My reason for posting is that I got so excited and happy for Jelena 🙂

I love the image of this collection (and also Après Chic), it’s cool that they’re showcasing a different style of beauty, and one cosmetic companies usually ignore. Bodybuilding FTW (says the fat chick… Lol).

I haven’t been interested in getting anything from any of the collections in a long, long time, but Firm Form definitely sounds like it’s got my name on it!

Nice campaign ad. I like the model they choose too. In a sea of soft, pretty faces for spring with perfectly blushing cheeks this stands out. I know it won’t appeal to everyone, but I appreciate that they really aren’t trying to appeal to everyone.

That said I doubt I’ll get or have the chance to get anything from this collection. I’m already waiting for the D/F reviews those quads are almost certainly going to get as well.

Super excited for this collection. I’m keeping it simple. Taupe Shape blush. Strong woman lipstick and Firm form x 2 because it’s just so unique and different. I hope they put this online today or tomorrow. I’d prefer to get myself in time for Xmas than after Xmas.

OMG I adore the promo pic. I love it when women have muscle (confession, I hold a power lifting state record in Texas). She reminds me a little of Gladys Portugues (a beautiful bodybuilder from the 80s who is married to Jean Claude Van Damme) and the pose recalls Robert Mapplethorpe’s artistic photos of female bodybuilders.

Too bad there’s not more I want from the collection, I already have Party Parrot and Pink Pigeon. I have been loving purples so the Strong Woman looks gorgeous and I”ll have to check out the quads in person.

I really wish the promo image wasn’t photoshopped beyond recognition. It would have been so much more effective to have a REAL muscular woman as the face of this campaign versus the oddly chopped together freakshow they chose. Basically, they get major points for trying to show a muscular, “non traditional” woman, and then they had to go and undo everything good they did by oddly contouring her arms and shaving away her waist.

The model posted on here, actually. (read down further) There are a few women at my gym who DO look like this so I really don’t think they chopped her together. Body building women, when they are pumped up, actually look this way. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

She is a real muscular woman. Her name is Jelena Abbou, a national figure competitor. As part of one of the mandatory competition poses, she is required to flare out her lats. That’s what she’s going in this picture, and why her waist look micro.

I’ve seen some “figure” competitors or their male body building equivalent- it looks mutant to me so I guess that’s what I’m reacting to– they work to sculpt their bodies into some artificially decided upon norm just so that they can win a trophy. To me, it’s just as jarring as looking at someone with gigunda artificial boobs. I guess that’s not what I think of when I think of a “real” woman… it is just another form of body modification to achieve an extreme result, like surgery or heavy tattooing. As the commenter above said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in this case i think beauty was determined by whoever judges the “figure” competitions. I’m not knocking strong or muscular women, just that I don’t think substituting one extreme for another helps break down barriers.

I actually think the male equivalent can look very nice 😀 like some models like Marcus Shelkenberg (spelling?) Tyson…etc if not overdone, and actually done with exercise and not steroids the male equivalent is very nice…very gorgeous lol. As for the female model beauty is in the eye of the beholder as another person above me said, she is beautiful in her own way.

And I don’t quite know what it is about the photoshopping that’s bugging me so much…. something about the contouring and smoothness of her muscles… like her lack of veins. A woman that jacked has got to have veins, right?

Again, I’m not attacking anyone. I think everyone has the right to have their body however they like it- what is important is that *they* like it. I really like that MAC wanted to use a stronger and more defined body type, and I think her arms look amazing. I just would have liked to see more natural photography showing that and maybe not such a weird dress/pose? There is just some artistic disconnect here between their message and the image. Thanks for letting me know the model’s name, I’ll look her up.

I *love* the juxtaposition with a PVC ball gown, personally. As for women “modifying” their bodies being “okay” as long as they like it-who says female bodybuilders don’t? It seems to me they’d choose a different path in life if they didn’t.

I think the model looks great, just not the dress they put her in, haha. The only thing I really like from this collection is Party Parrot. I like the “strength” idea, but everything looks a little drab.

Hooray for muscular, strong women! I’m on the buff side myself, and a weightlifter. I’m really want to see swatches of that matte red lipstick! It sounds promising.

incredible idea! I love when companies show that not just skinny woman are beautiful, and I LOVE bold colors, so I’m really going mad on the black and golden lips. MAC is one of the best not only for product quality (there are better products) but in innovation and brave campaigns.

I love the promo pic! I’m training to compete in my first figure show next year and ummmm I am excited for this collection. I was shocked to see this. Wow!!!! Nice MAC. <3

The promo image is probably the worst photo shopped image MAC has released to date. It looks like they chopped off a model’s head and attached it to a muscular woman’s body. Why so much photo shop MAC? There are plenty of muscular, beautiful women. Not overly impressed with the collection. Pass.

Maybe you should check out the model – Jelena Abbou – who actually has commented on this post 🙂 It’s not Photoshop, it IS a beautiful, muscular woman.

Absolute Power & Firm Form look interesting, and I *really* want to check out the taupe blush in person. The quads both look beautiful, but I think both are pretty much dupeable, even within the permanant MAC range (which may be a better option, given the quality of past quads); there may not be *exact* dupes, but I can see some possible matches given the way they’re showing on my screen that would give the same effect.

I like the purple one, too, but I have a couple in a similar range that I just don’t wear. I just can’t do bright pinks, though. They look beautiful on others, but they just don’t work with my overall style.

I’m on a desperate hunt for a taupe blush, though, so I may just have to suck it up and stalk my local MAC counter, LOL. At least they tend to get a decent amount of stock when it comes to this sort of collection, and the more “boring”, basic products tend to not sell so quickly.

I’ve been waiting for the taupe blush to come back as well. Meanwhile, Christine turned me on to the sculpting powder in Sculpt(no pun intended, by me anyway!). Its a taupy brown, slightly lighter than the one I used to get at the beauty supply store #215, which they no longer make, at least not in blush size! I use it for contouring or just as a brownish blush that does not turn orange on my very pink, redhead complexion. A make up artist recommended this type of shade for me a long time ago when she noticed that my “mocha” blush was turning orange, and I’ve been using it ever since. My guess is that MAC may make a similar shade in the eyeshadow collection, I have to take my well used container with me to the dept store one day and try to find a match in a shade unlikely to get discontinued too quickly. But MAC used to make a blush shade named taupe, I hope this is a reincarnation of that one. Good luck!

Although this collection doesn’t really tempt me at all, I love the strong model that they chose to represent it! Even better, I love that there are many commenters here that also seem to agree! Only thing I don’t like is that garbage-bag dress they had her wear. I weight-lift myself, although I have a long way to go to look like the model. I recently moved up to biceps curls with a 20-pound barbell in each hand, and I still have skinny little arms.

Also, to the people saying that she’s “gross” because she has muscles: there is nothing wrong with a woman having muscle. Just because she doesn’t fit your definition of being feminine doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with her.

I think they were going for a “girlie” silhouette, but with an unexpected fabric, hence the PVC. I quite like the dress, personally.

Also, to your point of femininity and muscles, if you’ve ever seen a professional ballerina, you’d notice they are extremely muscular & defined. They may not carry as much “bulk” (I don’t mean that in an offensive way, I just can’t think of a better term), but they are not the tiny little waifs they appear to be on stage. I was a dancer for many, many years, and I was quite muscular, and I did use weights. Although I haven’t seen the inside of a gym in 15 years, I still have a significant amount of tone & definition.

We still see thin and/or “skinny” men as masculine, so why is it so many have such difficulty with seeing muscular women as feminine?

I agree Diana!! She is gorgeous!! I too lift 20 lb bicep curl and have skinny little arms. It takes talent to look as amazing as this model, such dedication!

I have to highly disagree here. I think that women with fit/muscles, NOT depicted in highly sexual situations are inspiring. There is nothing wrong with a woman being strong. And any weightlifter has my vote. Women that break those boudaries that men are the stronger sex– well I’m sorry but they are perfect. This is an amazing photo, and MAC got more of my business with it.

im excited for party parrot and pink pigeon to relaunch from the iris apfel collection. i personally wont be purchasing since i already have backups… but theyd be a great gift sincr they are such beautiful colors. i love this ad, its edgy and unique and its so different from all the flowery light and semi-boring collections recently (minus marilyn). cant wait to see what they come out with next!

How is this even a collection? Barely a solid theme just like Apres Chic. It’s like they just throw a dart on a piece of paper with a bunch of words on it.

I’m so overwhelmed by all the MAC collections. I’m not even going to try to get absorbed in this one. But I do love the model – I LOVE that women with muscles is becoming more celebrated rather than the old “oh that’s weird” thing… one of my goals has been to get stronger arm muscles and it’s really an amazing feeling, actually seeing the physical results and just having more strength in general

Can someone tell me why Stereo Rose is so popular? Is it because it was LE and now everyone is clamoring over a LE product. Or is it the color, texture or whatever? And what skin colordo you have if you dont mind also saying? I am just very curious.

Hi, Stacey! I bought Stereo Rose a looong time ago when it was first released. I think it’s a really gorgeous color. It’s a coral-rose with a very high sheen. It’s one of the MSF’s with a very smooth feel. It doesn’t have any chunky glittery bits. I’m around NC20 in the cooler months and NC25-30 in warmer months. I can’t apply this too heavily otherwise I look like I’ve been sunburnt or slapped, LOL. I think of it as a mix of NARS’ Torrid and NARS’ Taos in terms of shade.

Very interesting look that Mac decided to choose this time. Very unusual aswell. We all have different perceptions on beauty, and Mac seems to want to include everyone, all women that is. Except for the fact that not only women use makeup, and this specifically mentions women, this campaign…I like the idea of the promo picture, even if I could never identify with it.

There are only two things that I like about this collection — firm form lippy and the model’s biceps. She is awesome. Can MAC please sell the promotion poster for this collection as well?

I LOVE the promo photo! It made me stop and laugh in pleasant surprise. It catches your attention when scrolling down the typical pretty promo images. It’s one of the reasons I still love MAC, they break the mold.

Collection looks interesting! I’m keen as BEANS to get my hands on Pink Pigeon, been searching for a dupe for it for months! The eyeshadow shades really appeal, but I’m anticipating yet more duds. Sad, really!

Feline huh? but the other collection has MSF Stereo Rose…. why do they do that? now i have to choose one XD i thing i will just buy something form the Apres Chic Collection, those prolongwear eyelines look nice too

Can someone remind me what time MAC releases limited edition collections online? I know this is scheduled to go live December 24th, but I don’t know what time.

I recently moved from Philadelphia to upstate NY. I called the one mac counter in mt town and the collection doesn’t go onsale in store until January 3rd.

Yes.. the lady has muscles … I don’t care about that !!! I would like to know what time the collection will be released online on the 24th (New York Time) so that I can get my hands on Pink Pigeon and Party Parrot. Christine could you kindly help mere : ) !!!

Usually around midnight. However, you have to look in the lipstick section. I too was doing that for Marilyn Monroe collection and couldn’t see it on the main page. Until later on when I was browsing their website it displayed in the “Lipstick section.”

MAC must think that people are made out of money. Permanent Candy Yum Yum plus three new collections released on the same day? Quite the overload of product. It’s a good thing that I no longer use a credit card…lol! I will definitely get CYY and Strong Woman since one can never have too many matte purple lipsticks.

Hi Laura!

The press release says so, but a MAC artist commented that only freestanding will be getting it – so I’m trying to look into it now.

There has been some confusion on this/last minute changes, so I’m still trying to confirm if that’s still true. Best bet is to call your local store at this time!

My Nordstrom said they are not getting this….they had the après collection for me to look at. Went online this morning and ordered the black lipstick but the two blushes were sold out:(.

I am so confused. At midnight westcoast time the collection was not yet up, but if you go under lipsticks you are able to find party parrot and pink pigeon. Already without the collection being posted party parrot is already sold out!

I logged on to their website at 4:00am and the blushes were sold out. All the lipsticks were still available. I ordered Firm Form. That’s the only lipstick I was interested it. I plan on using it next year for Halloween. lol

NOT coming to partnered locations? True.
I was at Macy’s and they did not get this collection, they sent me to a MAC location. They did get Apres Chic, so I picked up 4 items from that collection.

Woah awesome muscle tone, I love how die hard dedication can transform your body into something that looks so powerful. all i do is run on the treadmill, but once my two kiddies start going to school, I may have to do some serious weights! Oh and I must get my hands on those lippies!

Yes! I thought this collection wouldn’t come out online in Belgium, but it did today! Just ordered Pink Pigeon, Party Parrot and Strong Woman lipsticks. Also Embrace Me lipliner 😀
