What is going on at MAC’s marketing department? Who read this copy and said “Yes, this is what we will go with for our holiday launch. The youths will connect with this.”

Dear MAC, you need help. Please hire me.

Raeanne Avatar

I totally agree on the marketing copy. It couldn’t be less impressive. LOL. I feel bad for saying so, but with all the Holiday releases, I look to companies to be a little more innovative and inventive with their collections. It’s a pretty enough collection, and looks well-edited. But I’ve never cared about the “cool kids” and still don’t. 😉

Taylor Noriega Avatar

I agree with you, it seems to miss the mark.

What it made me think of was Stranger Things (Netflix original series),
the young kids in the show could be considered “cool”… and one of the boys asks the main character girl to go to the “Snow Ball” with him…

Season 2 is coming out later this month, so maybe people will have the “Snow Ball” on their minds again.

BUT SERIOUSLY THATS A HUGE STRETCH.

I hadn’t seen the description before, just the images, so am purposely overlooking the text. I’m looking forward to this collection. I’d like a single eyeshadow or two, particularly the ones with duochrome shift, maybe a highlighter (peach) and I might pick up 1-2 items from this or the Nov 2 release for gifting. I’d like to see highlighter swatches.

LoveAlwaysMakeup Avatar

I am so confused, I just pre-ordered at a Mac counter over the phone for the Face Bag in GOLD which is suppose to be the Whisper of Guilt EDS highlighter, the Fan Brush and a bag…when I finished the sales rep said my items would be shipping November 2nd but above it says 10/19 and I see you referring to November 2nd as well can you fill me in what you mean?! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! XO

Nobody Avatar

The second round of holiday kits, including the face bag you ordered, will be released a few weeks after the first round. The date of Nov. 2 is correct.

LoveAlwaysMakeup Avatar

THANK YOU!! I called the counter I pre-ordered from and was told it would be 10/19 but later received a call that it was correct the first time, not until Nov 2nd so honestly, I don’t even think the counters know when LOL. Thankful for anyone who has more info!!!

1) Thank you for posting all the details here! I am always curious what their holiday packaging will look like. This is pretty and I like that the collection isn’t gigantic.

2) I agree with other comments. That copy from MAC is like something I’ve never seen them write before! It’s wacky! Anytime a brand starts talking like, “hey be one of the cool kids!” they just sound so OLD!

3) I came here after seeing your post on Instagram and have read through the comments. Wow what a difference! I wonder if audiences between platforms are always that different from one another? If so it illustrates how confusing it would be to try to succeed across all social media outlets.

Verrrry interesting. Going to have to look at Christine’s IG. I assume you are right. This blog is text and analysis heavy, and many (descriptors deleted) do not have the desire, attention span, (or reading skills, possibly) and want an image driven platform. I confess to wanting heavy analysis, and only hit up swatchfest IGs, like Michelle’s and Trendmood, via googling them. I eschew most SM apps. Believe it’s def age-related. To aged me, much SM is self promotion and a massive time suck. Your point on the difficulty of success across all SM is well taken. PS We want YOUR collection.
And yes, MAC, youth pandering is almost as offensive as your youth as Native American cum Coachella campaign. (Tribe.) But few can top that one for offending the masses. Unfortunately, MAC copywriters go cringeworthy quite a lot. Give me deliberately offensive, with art, like the Nars Guy Bourdain. In your face, and if you don’t like it, leave it. Not this simpering.

kjh Avatar

Oh, wow. Who knew I was going to take the offense award? So many international commentors on the IG, and the blog would be almost impossible for those readers. Omg! Clearly, the visuals are the most accessible, world around. But I still think text appeals to an older age bracket. I read about KB skincare in English, and Cosdna it to death, but never look at image driven info. Don’t watch KB you tubers in either language. I’m old and need some written information. Apologies to Ms C’s international IG fans.

Dustin Avatar

Haha it’s not that you’re missing anything. What I was referring to was the difference in opinions that I saw on IG vs the blog. On the blog it seemed to me that most of the comments were more in the skeptical/cautious category while on IG it seemed that almost all of the comments were from people very excited and eager to buy this collection up.

I noticed it because after reading both I had wondered if I was looking at the wrong post on accident because they seemed so different. I haven’t gone back to look and see if anything has changed but it made me wonder if the audience for each platform was that different.

I know people prefer their platforms and tend to stick with them – I think that’s why on Instagram you’ll see people with nearly 100k followers but their YouTube channel that they keep promoting only has 5k subscribers. I don’t think there’s a lot of crossover from platform to platform.

Dustin Avatar

I forgot about the Tribe Collection. I must have blocked it! Ha. They certainly have gone against the social climate from time to time – but not in a social commentary/statement kind of way… more like a, “This is cool, right?” kind of way.

I agree with your statement on more deliberately offensive artistic statements. They are always a risk and most established brands won’t take those risks.

I’ve often noticed when companies are starting out they might be edgier and take more chances because they have less to loose – then as they build an audience who likes them for it, they get so afraid of loosing their audience that they water themselves down and start to loose touch with what made them interesting in the first place…

As I type that though I also realize it’s kind of just human nature isn’t it? You see it on YouTube all the time, that’s for sure. And I can’t tell you how many times someone might have been interested in me because of who I was, but then I got so intimidated and afraid of pushing them away (by being myself) that I started to change into who I THOUGHT they wanted me to be. I think a lot of people do this.

Fun with being human! Haha

Hi! Does anyone know what this is SNOWBALL FACE POWDER – HAPPY GO DAZZINGLY Gold with sparkle?

Is it a highlighter a setting powder?

I got mine today and all it says is Face Powder (Opalescent).

I just don’t want to try it in case I want to return it.

Thank you.

Sarah Avatar

That is some really pretty packaging..

Those lipsticks look kind of interesting, but it’s hard to judge since Mac’s promotional pics are so airbrushed looking

Mariella Avatar

I like the look of the face powders in the upper picture but just because they’re pretty and sparkly and “festive”. I doubt I would have any use at all for them. And while I love the ED eyeshadows MAC came out with in past, these don’t look so good – they look like they’d be poorly pigmented and have glitter fallout. Why couldn’t they just repromote Soul Serenade (even giving it a festive holiday-themed name) and make ME very happy????

Tini Avatar

I already own WOG multiple times and even though I really like it I won’t buy another one. I was soo looking forward to see what the other highlighter would look like and now I’m so disappointed it’s Show Gold from their permanent collection. Also, I find the Duochrome EDSF to be conpletely different in texture compared to the standard one, which are my favourites. Too bad, the packaging is gorgeous! I’d love to have it in my collection but it’s a no for me..

Jaclyn Avatar

I’m loving all of the lipsticks here and the two highlighters/skin finishes. However, I am super overwhelmed by ALL of the gift sets MAC is offering this year (I feel like there were less last year or maybe they were more focused)?). The little gift sets just have too many options, it stresses me out ?
And yes the marketing intro (even for me in my early 20s right now) is incredibly corny.

kellly Avatar

I’m curious to see reviews of the products. I’m looking at the eye shadow colors and since I love sparkle and shine, I’d want to see how they perform. I agree, the packaging is beautiful and I like those snowflake embossed things on the powders.

Leslie Avatar

It’s been a long time since anything from MAC caught my eye. This is a pretty collection. The single eyeshadows are what I’m most interested in. I’m always looking for singles. The shades are pretty and the packaging, as well. Will have to swatch them at the counter before I buy. We shall see!!

Mai Avatar

I only wanted the whisper of guilt bag and I finally got it. Im happy. thats all i cared about was whisper if guilt.lol and i got it in gold packaging im happy.

Michelle Avatar

I just bought Whisper of Gilt (which is a warm yellow gold) with the little fan brush and sequin bag at Ulta yesterday. I fell in love with the whole set. The rose gold color of the packaging is stunning and has bling bling that is not tacky but ultra feminine for the Holidays. Parts of the collection was there but not all. The packaging is gorgeous for all that I could see that they had in stock. I want the peachy Here Comes Joy Face Powder too. It was not there but I know it would compliment my coloring better. Whisper of Gilt is a bit warm for me but as long as I stay on the tan side it could work through the Holidays. Here in Florida that is possible. Usually I let myself pale for the Winter but maybe not this year! I did like the little lipstick collections too. The larger one was fun, It would be good for collectors new and seasoned alike. Both of the eyeshadow palettes are stunning. I did not see the single eyeshadows any where. I need to get to the Pro Store to check them out I suppose.
