MAC Screaming Bright, Silver Dew, Formidable Studio Studio Nail Lacquers
MAC Screaming Bright Studio Nail Lacquer ($12.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “super glitter gold [with a Pearl finish].” It’s a light-medium, slightly warm-toned gold with a pearly, slightly metallic, finish. It was very nearly opaque after two coats, and the consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so the polish spread evenly across the nail without a fuss. It dried down slightly faster than other shades in the range. There were very slightly visible brush strokes, but they weren’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. NARS Gold Viper (LE, $20.00) is more metallic. L’Oreal The Statement Piece (LE, $6.99) is more glittery. Revlon Gold Coin (P, $4.99) is cooler-toned. Illamasqua Swinger (P, $17.00) is cooler-toned. Chanel Diwali (LE, $27.00) is darker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Cruising (P, $10.00) is darker, yellower. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Silver Dew Studio Nail Lacquer ($12.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “gold glitter base with multi-colored large glitter [with a Glitter finish].” It’s a glittering, white gold with larger multi-colored glitter. It was semi-sheer after two coats with noticeable translucency. It might be better as a top coat, though it’s almost too pigmented for that. Chanel Pearl Drop (LE, $27.00) was the closest I had in color, but it has such a different finish, so I wouldn’t consider them dupes.
MAC Formidable Studio Nail Lacquer ($12.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “teal green with pink multi-changing pearl [with a Pearl finish].” It’s a plummy purple base with iridescent shimmer that shifts from bluish-teal to fiery pink-plum. It’s semi-opaque after two coats (it’s really a three-coater, if you want nice results). The shimmer/pearl disperses fairly evenly, and it dries down to a lightly glossy finish. It had a slightly thinner consistency, but it didn’t pool along the edges or seem watery. Orly Galaxy Girl is very similar (thanks for the reminders!).

Formidable looks like Orly Galaxy Girl from Cosmic FX 2010!!
Oh yeah!! Totally forgot about that one!
I’m not usually one for gold nails, but screaming bright is very nice. It’s paler and a little more antique (a bit greenish) in it’s finish. Golds than run with really strong gold tones look horrible against my skin.
It’s definitely a nice alternative to straight yellow gold!
MAC Formidable looks like a really unique color! I guess if you mix a bit of gold into something like Clinique black honey.. it might come close to this! Just thinking! 🙂
Oh, that could be pretty!
I LOVE Formidable. Hope it makes it to the UK! As for dupes, it reminded me of Illamasqua’s Canada exclusive Gothica.
The MAC looks a little thinner but also sparklier. Perhaps this will be a good dupe for those of who aren’t Canadian 😉
Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂
I had high hopes for Formidable! I feel a bit disappointed.
It’s just one of those shades that needs three coats unfortunately!
Formidable looks different compared to the original release… Is it?
It seemed the same to me – maybe a little thinner!
I believe that Orly’s Galaxy Girl is pretty close to Formidable. At least it was in the original Venomous Villains release 🙂
You’re totally right! 🙂
Wow, Formidable is indeed formidable! It reminds me of that gorgeous pigment Blue brown.
It definitely has a similar vibe!
I like formidable!!! 🙂
Yay!
Silver Dew looks very pretty on you Christine! Both Sephora Formula X and L’oreal have shades/formulations that look super similar I find. You’re a very neat nail-painter!!Thnx for the swatches:)
No prob, Dee!
Dupe for Formidable = Julep Ciara!
Thank you for sharing! 😀
I think maybe Orly Galaxy Girl from the Orly Cosmic FX collection is a dupe for Formidable?
Yes, you’re totally right! 😀
ooh the silver dew is pretty.
It is!
So it’s not exactly a dupe but I was thinking that the ‘Formidable’ reminded me of your review of ‘Highlight’ when you put it over Heroin. I think I’d prefer to pay both of those and have the versatility and a bit more vibrancy.
There is a similar look/feel to it – and probably more obvious!
I like all of those but not enough to purchase.
Aw, that’s too bad!
These are really nice glitter nail polishes, not chunky at all. Also, I should mention that your application technique is really impressive.
Thank you!
Silver Dew reminds me of Finger Paints Copy Cat, except that the latter has more of a gold-ish base!
Thanks for the heads up!
Silver Dew is my favourite of these three, I think! I love ‘snowy’ nail polishes, somehow, especially if they sparkle! Formidable is very disappointing – it’s a great colour concept, and maybe it’d work for layering, but by itself it’s one of those awkwardly sheer shades that kind of has a subtle way of making nails look ‘dirty’ somehow. Maybe that’s not quite the right word, but there’s something about it that just doesn’t feel right!
A third coat should help a lot, but it is surprisingly sheer after two!
Hi Christine! I have been seeing all of these reviews for nail lacquer, but I haven’t seen them on the website yet. Are these due to be released soon, are they permanent ? I love Formidable! Thanks! 🙂
Never mind, I just saw on the blog that these are permanent! Yay!
Online July 3rd (North America), at all MAC locations on July 10th (North America); September 2014 (International). Permanent!
I’m definitely not floored by these polishes! I don’t mind Screaming Bright, but it’s the only one out of the bunch that I like. However, I think you could easily find a dupe for it elsewhere!
It’s definitely not super unique!
Silver Dew is really calling to me. And I don’t usually do silver.
It’s an interesting texture!
I could definitely see myself wearing Screaming Bright during the holiday season! It’s beautifully festive!
Definitely!
I really like Screaming Bright!
Yay!
…whoops.
Sorry, MAC, I won’t be getting Formidable. I kinda forgot I already owned ORLY Galaxy Girl.
My polish stash is getting utterly ridiculous.
It does look nice! So, if Galaxy Girl is hard to find, I think Formidable would work out well.
I think ORLY Galaxy Girl is a bit more pigmented, too, so that’s a win for you 😉
Silver Dew looks a lot like On A Silver Platter by Essie, although the Essie polish is a little less glitter dense.
Thank you for sharing, Tash!
Oh, dear. I like all three, will have to save all summer to be able to buy a lot of nail polishes in August – September when I hope they will be available here.
If I had to pick one it would be Formidable, it’s purpley (purply, purpely?) and I love purples!
Thankfully they’re permanent, so at least there’s no hectic rush!
Love “MAC Formidable Studio Nail Lacquer”, this color mixed some bites of purple and blue, make me goes in love!
I always love nailpolish since 15 years maybe i’ll buy it a lot, but now i’m trying lots of new shades and textures, this market goes huge lately.
With love,
The pink lemonade
It’s a really cool shade!
I second Julep Ciara as a dupe for Formidable!
Thanks, Meagan! 😀
