Oh that highlighter. I think I tried Whisper of Gilt in past and it wasn’t for me but with that India-inspired “mosaic” on the surface, maybe I will try to get my mitts on this and “make” it work for me. Some years ago, Clarins had some gorgeous summer products (an LE eye palette and a bronzer) with a similar pattern. I just love it.

Kiran Avatar

It’s not Indian inspired. It’s actually leans more Islamic Art especially with the colour blue. On Selfridges website the lipstick even reflect Islamic names.

Mariella Avatar

I didn’t even notice the blue packaging, just the impression on the surface of the highlighter. But so much of what we saw in India has a similar “motif”, hardly surprising given the intertwining (not always happily) of Muslim and Hindu history in India.

Cherie Avatar

Islamic art is absolutely intertwined with the art of South Asia (Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Shalimar Gardens…..). Being South Asian myself and of mixed religious descent, these kind of motifs surround me. Indian art can only be described as a mix as the Indian subcontinent is exactly that, drawing on from so many regions and cultures that have had its influences throughout the centuries.

That said, boy do I wish this collection was available in the US! I’ll be eagerly awaiting your review on this!

Now I’m really confused. Does “International” include Canada? I’d have thought that “international” would sort of include everyone, including the US. The MAC store near me hasn’t re-opened yet (it’s one of the few stores in the mall that hasn’t but it’s kind of understandable since samples are taboo for the time being) and I do have the feeling that Whisper of Gilt (the only thing here that interests me) really isn’t a great colour for me. Ah well – loonies saved, perhaps!

Kiran Avatar

I was about to tell you the same thing what Cherie did many of the popular art that people associate with India, are actually influenced by Islamic Art due to moghul three centuries rule over Indian sub-continent. Not to disrespect India by any means. It’s beautiful country. But I see Indian Art to be more colorful like holi colours. Islamic Art is mostly reflected by greens and blue with calligraphy that Mac is calling “mosaic”. Mac actually first released it first in Germany. It caused a lot of uproar in Muslim nations because not only was this released under a false pretense “mosaic” but it was released at a time when Muslim nations were celebrating their Ramadan holidays ( thus eventually the name reflection on Selfridges). Many argued it was Spanish Art. But little do people realize that a lot of Spanish Art has intertwined with moorish art especially in southern Spain. The famous Granada( means Pomegranate in Arabic)that hosts the Alhambra was part of many buildings and ornamentation that were built by moors in Middle Ages. That art was then brought to Latin America by the Spanish which can found in nations such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, areas especially that are close to the coast.
My rant was no way to disrespect you per se. As someone who was born in that part of the world, I find it dishonest that companies at the scale of Mac, disregard other cultures and do not give proper credit where it is due !

I think I lost my comment. This is not the first time MAC has committed this faux pas. A couple of years back (?) they ripped off Native American motifs and passed it off as Festival. The arabesque style of Islamic decoration is mesmerizing, especially in architecture, as you stated, in Spain, Turkey….all over the Islamic world.

kjh Avatar

Gorgeous. You can see a difficult decision at MAC here. Do we issue Whisper of Gilt, that is (was? IDK if it’s LE) massively popular and presses well….but most devotees have already….or create a new shade?

TravelingBlush Avatar

Why would MAC be thinking of devotees? Every year tens if not hundreds of millions of people around the world discover MAC.

Tracey E. Avatar

Ah, Whisper of Gilt repromote again. I’m baffled why MAC recycles this shade so frequently and doesn’t offer an alternative for the bajllion of us who have it (or have confirmed it doesn’t suit us).

Naesynae Avatar

Yes! I flicked backwards and forwards between the descriptions and picture multiple times trying to work out which one it was, as every single one of them is either permanent or a repromote. It drives me nuts that mac always do this

Genevieve Avatar

Gosh that highlighter looks beautiful – I would be too scared to disrupt the gorgeous pattern on it. The eyeshadow palette shades look a tad random to me – delete the burnt orange shade and that dark brown matte and add either some more purple shades or soft greens and I think it would be more variable.
I love the lipstick shades though.
