New MAC Mascara:  False Lashes

MAC False Lashes Mascara ($18.00 for 0.28 oz.) is the newest mascara to MAC’s line-up, which will be added to the permanent range in regular black packaging on December 26th. It was, however, released in limited edition Marcel Wanders packaging with the MAC & Marcel Wanders Collection launched on the 24th. The price is the same either way (that was a surprise!), and it is available in just one shade: False Black (black).

From MAC: “False Lashes Mascara adds dramatic volume, the rich, creamy, volumizing formula magnifies and multiplies the look of each lash, creating dramatically thick, long, curled, exaggerated lashes. The lush brush applies a deluxe dose of heavy pigment to the lashes and works in combination with the product to create incredible volume, length and density. The pigments in the formula are treated to allow for maximum colour payoff that remains true, deep, uniform and wears all day long. It’s flake- and smudge-resistant, ophthamologist-tested and safe for contact-wearers.”

Mascara is always an interesting product to review, because every description reads like a miracle product, so it can be difficult to determine what exactly what one should (reasonably) expect it to do. False Lashes is a volumizing mascara first, but it should also boast a dramatic result, from thicker, longer, more curled lashes. “Heavy pigment” leads me to expect a very rich black, dense and heavy in its darkness.

False Lashes excels in delivering longer lashes that are sky-high with a natural lift (all images are without aid of an eyelash curler). It’s a solid black mascara, though I didn’t think it was the deepest, darkest black I’ve experienced (Plushlash and Zoomlash seem darker to me). I did not notice a significant increase in volume; the results I achieved were really dominated by the length and curling power of the formula. There is certainly a volume increase from the standpoint of just thicker, longer, generally improved lashes overall, but my lashes do not appear much fuller.

The formula did not clump easily; you really had to wait for it to dry (20-30 seconds drying time) and be on the third or fourth full coat to find yourself is spidery territory. I was easily able to apply two full coats back-to-back without clumping issues. It dries pretty quickly but not too fast–you do have time to work it from base to tip and go back for more if necessary. When it dried, my lashes didn’t feel dried out or crunchy–they were still pretty soft and felt lightweight. After wearing this mascara for a few days in twelve-hour bursts, I did not have any fall out, smudging, or budging. It came off easily with makeup remover, but it lasted all day and never gave me raccoon eyes.

The brush was fairly large, so if you have smaller eyes, it may be a concern, and it may be unwieldy to use on lower lashes in particular.  It looks much like a normal mascara wand, and it has a slightly more tapered tip.

Overall, it’s a nice mascara, but I’m not sure it’ll make it into my regular rotation of mascaras. It does length amazingly, so it may work wonders on those with shorter lashes, and it does give nice lift on its own (and it holds up well throughout the day), too. If you have naturally long lashes, though, I think this may be too much lengthening power to work well for you.  It is a bit pricey for a MAC mascara, though–unlike Haute & Naughty (which was also $18), which had the crazy packaging, I’m not sure why this merits the $18 price tag.

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 7/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: It lengthens lashes quite dramatically with some lift, so for shorter, straighter lashes, it might be a worthwhile mascara.

I can see the difference…. BUT I use Maybellines Falsies and i think for half the price it works the same. Also can i vent here? I had been waiting for this collection for months… I finally have the money go all the way to the mall get to the MAC display where they had Wanders stuff and guess what? I left with nothing! I felt that the collection looked plain, its over priced for what your getting, and the packaging although pretty in pictures it falls flat in person. So sad 🙁

but yay you saved up that money so you can use it for something else fun and cool !!

i agree with you I thought the pictures looked comparable to my maybelline mascara. except I use stiletto lash, i think maybelline makes the best for your value mascaras in general.

It’s sad that Maybelline tests on animals! And MAC packages look great, I think 😀

I got this mascara recommended by the Bloomingdale’s saleslady and I think I’ll use it a lot in the future; it’s similar to Clinique’s Lash Doubling Mascara, maybe even a bit better.

I think this’ll be the only thing I purchase from the Marcel Wanders collection. Compared to the price of other high end mascaras, $18 isn’t that harsh. I have very short, stubbly lashes so maybe this will perform a magic trick or two for me!

Hi Kate! You should try the DiorShow mascara, I really loved it! I started shopping around for other drug store brands like Rimmel False Lash Effect- it comes in a hot pink tube with blue writing! That makes a massive difference and this is all without eye lash curlers! x

I wish the before pics were taken in the same lighting and equally as close up as the after! It makes it harder for me to see what the effect of the mascara really is. Regardless, I think I’ll be passing this one up.

Hi!!

Does anyone know if this collection is going to come to the UK? I am seriously debating whether or not to get the brush in this collection as I am yet to add it to my collection. I suppose the extra price tag is just for the elaborately designed brush handle!!

How does this mascara compare to Benefit’s BadGal or Dior’s Diorshow? It seems as though it is in that family of brushes, though I may be mistaken

mascara is never that important to me. I have a TON of lashes so even the worst of mascaras have a noticably good difference (lol). And im not exaggerating when I say good mascaras give that phalse lash look.

Has MAC confirmed that this mascara will be $18 when it launches in regular packaging too, or is it just $18 because it’s part of the higher-priced collection?

I dont like how MAC is using all of Prescriptives original products. This is the same mascara Perscriptives has or HAD since they don’t sell in stores anymore. MAC also took the magically cool powder that came out with the venomous villains collection as well.. What’s up with that??

Mars Avatar

When Estee Lauder decided to discontinue the Prescriptives line, they chose to keep many of the products & spread them out among the other Estee Lauder brands. As one of the most popular Estee Lauder brands, MAC got False Lashes, Magic Powder & Comfort Cream, with more to come in the future. Other lines got other formulas but chose to change the names. I for one am glad to see some of my favorite products come back regardless of what line they are now a part of.

I just got mine in the mail yesterday, but I haven’t tried it yet. The tube is so pretty, I think I’ll keep it even after I use the product up. I really like lengthening mascaras and I’m glad this one got a positive review.

i bought this the other day . the sales ma told me it was similar to lancome definicils. i got it in the special packaging only bc they are going to release it normal packaging for the same price,. thats weird. i like the product so far. i have the opulash and haught/naughty mascara. so far i love the opulash.

Does anyone know if this stuff drys up quickly after having it for awhile? I’ve always had trouble with my mascaras having fallout after hardly any use and its very annoying.. 🙁 I loved Dior show but after a little bit it started to flake too. :/

Igliese Avatar

I’m so fascinated by the Plush Lash, but I was told it’s good for shorter lashes, and mine are long, so I got the False Lashes for volume. 😀

This mascara is absolutely FABULOUS!!!!! I’m very picky about my cosmetics and I must say that I’m very impressed with this product. I’ve tried a number of mascara products and I must say that this is by far the BEST! I’m still interested in trying the Zoom Fast mascara by MAC too! My lashes were lengthened and didn’t feel hard once dry and lasted all day long. I took a friend of mine to the MAC counter to learn how to apply mascara and she bought the false lashes mascara too! Ladies this is a must have from MAC! Enjoy your LASHES!
