MAC Magic, Mirth, & Mischief Review: Sorceress Eye Shadows

I’ve always liked MAC eyeshadow palettes, because I do feel like they represent a chance to get multiple eyeshadows at a more affordable price point, and MAC has put out some great limited edition shades in holiday palettes in the past. This year’s palettes actually reminded me of a bit of the Ornamentalism palettes from a few years ago–which is a good thing. The packaging is better, though, this year, as it’s sleek, functional, and feels like it has more quality than the last few years’ palettes.

6 Sorceress Eye Shadows ($36.00 U.S.)

  • White Rabbit is a frosty silver-tinged white. It’s not a particularly unique shade, and I’d say it’s a little too frosty to work well as a highlighter for most.
  • Hold My Gaze is a gray-green base with golden-green shimmer. This is actually a very unique shade, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an eyeshadow of this color before (which is pretty surprising). It has decent pigmentation. It’s just a very unusual shade.
  • Edge of Dark is a charcoal gray with silver gray shimmer, and I had some issues getting it to go on smoothly. It doesn’t have the best texture, but it is a lustre, so I’m not surprised.
  • Magnetized is a frosty white-purple. It kind of reminded me of a lighter, whiter Beautiful Iris eyeshadow.
  • Hypnotizing is a grayed down mauve. It’s dark yet light, because it’s not an intense shade.
  • Altered State is a dark, almost jewel-toned purple with slight reddish brown tones. I liked this shade a lot.

I liked the combination of colors MAC put into the Sorceress combination, and I was pleasantly surprised by Hold My Gaze. I’d probably buy it just for that shade, simply because I haven’t seen one like that before. I can appreciate the originality of it! Overall, though, it is a cooler palette, so if you prefer warm shades, you might not like this one.

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

Thanks for the review Christine! This is my first time buying any of the holiday eye kits from MAC! I absolutely love the Sorceress and Smoke and Mirrors palette. I’m so happy I picked it up. Thanks again!

I think this might have to be the one I pick up, though I’ll wait for the rest of your reviews. But Hold My Gaze is *awesome*, Hypnotizing is really nice and would spruce up a neutral eye, and I’ve been wanting a red-based purple.

Based on Pursebuzz’s swatches, I really wanted this palette, but now I’m not sure, the colours seem different in your swatches. Need to check out in person as and when this collection makes it to the UK (guessing 2 more weeks?).

I just got this one, Can’t wait to see some looks with it. Hold my gaze is such an amazing color. Very unique. White rabbit is too frosty to use for a highlight but it works great in the inner corner to make your eyes look brighter. A little goes along way with this color.

omg hold my gaze looks AMAZING. i was really really trying to avoid this collection. this palette is really nice. it’s been a hard week at work, maybe i’ll buy myself a little treat. 🙂

The Sorceress palette is probably my favourite palette out of all the palettes this year. Hold My Gaze is probably the most unique shade in the palette, as I haven’t seen it released in previous collections or in the permanent. The colour does remind me of something in on of the Tarte Fall Palettes though.

“Hold my gaze” is pretty it reminds me of a Scott Barnes Eye ice shade (can’t remember the name off hand). You are right it is unique, when I wear the SB version, it provides a non “boring” neutral daytime eye and looks fab applied wet on the lower line. I wish “Hold my gaze” was sold individually because I am not gravitating to the remainding shades of this palette.

if i were to get an eye palette from this launch it would be this one. however, i think i’ll just end up getting the NARS duos brousse and eurydice instead.

I really wish Magnetized showed up on the skin as it does in the palette. If it did, it would make that row of shadows perfect. I loooove Hypnotizing and Altered State. Hold My Gaze is a really unique colour. Good job, MAC! I honestly cannot say it reminds me of anything else they’ve come out with. Edge of Dark is quite unique too, even if it is hard to work with. I love the sparkle.

White Rabbit… I just laugh. It’s the same sparkly white they put out every year. Gross and tacky. I never, ever use those shimmery white shades they put in palettes. At most, I’ve used it for the tear duct area. As a highlighter, it’s way too much, way too 80s.

Hi Christine, Thanks for the wonderful swatches. I was wondering whether you wouldn’t mind weighing/giving approximate weight of this palette because my brother is buying mac for me (I’m in Australia) and was going to send it so I’m not sure if I should buy a palette if the shipping is greatly increased.

Thanks so much.

I ordered this, because I love the colors. But what I love isn’t always what looks best on me. After seeing the swatches, I’m thinking the colors may be too intense and frosty for me. I might exchange it for Smoke and Mirrors. I love the packaging for this collection!
