MAC Illustrated Smoldering Eye Bag Review, Photos, Swatches (2013)

MAC Illustrated Smoldering Eye Bag ($46.50) includes three full-sized products: a Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo, Eye Kohl, and False Lashes Mascara. The duo is worth $21, pencil is worth $16, and mascara is worth $20, so the total value of the set is $57, plus a full-sized makeup bag. The bag is actually the same size as the Illustrated bags that were released alone, and those retailed at $36, so the maximum possible value would be $93. The bag seemed to be made out of the same material as the Illustrated standalone bags. Keep in mind, This or That came out in 2011, and the eyeliner and mascara are both part of the permanent range.

This and That #1 is a warm, creamy white with a satin finish. It had good color payoff applied dry, and it had great color payoff applied damp. MAC Chill is cooler-toned, matte. MAC Mylar is yellower. See comparison swatches.

This and That #2 is a warm, pale golden peach with a frosted, metallic finish. It had so-so color payoff applie dry, and when applied damp, the pigmentation remained the same but the texture was smoother. Disney Splendid is similar. Buxom Collie is a cream and more golden. See comparison swatches.

Smolder is a rich black with a matte finish. It had good color payoff, and the consistency was lightly creamy and glided across the skin well. This is part of the permanent range. I’ve reviewed this in the past, and it has numerous dupes since it is a black eyeliner and many brands make them (see black eyeliner comparisons)./

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Ahh Smolder is my fave! I have the pencil down to a measly stump…I wish they would sell these at MAC because I don’t have a Nordstroms near me and don’t like shopping online :/

Not sure you read the comments Christine but wanted to put my 2 cents in of some things I find that are not fab anymore since the last site wide changes were made to your blog…I get my notices via email – there is really limited info on each article in the email notice – but then often not much either when I hop over to the linked URL..for me, far too many I need to link off again on the continue reading link fr a topic…many times if there is not enough info given or photos I think might interest me – I never get to the ‘continued reading’ link – no one wants to have that many open pages on their browsers…and then you have to look at your open tabs and figure out which one you left off and constantly I pick the wrong on to get back to a point in the blog I get to continue to look at the rest of the topics for that day’s blog. So it’s kind of a two fold thing – ones lack of what I can scroll though and find what I am interested in reading off the email subscription notices – but also getting to the days main URL and having to flip to maybe 8 or more new open tabs to ‘continue reading.’ I know I don’t look at everything like I used to because of this change. Before I could scroll down and skim what you were reviewing or blogging about and stop at the sections that were of interest to me. Now I have to say it’s such a chore I often look at just the first one or two dump the email notice to trash…and that’s sad because you really do have an outstanding blog. Not sure you get enough feedback on the blog formatting but I think it’s pretty darn important to know that long time readers might not be reading it ever day anymore just because too many hurdles to jump through now on the formatting. maybe someone thought it a good idea not to have such long blog to have to scroll down through – they were long – but least it was all there in one view other then when there was a ‘look at the poll results’ and those can open easy in a pop up window if you wanted them to. I know I miss a lot now but I honestly don’t have the patience or the time to have to open all the continue reading links and look at all the line of open tabs.

Hi!

We switched to a new email service, and as a result, we are only offering the partial feed. We provide an image along with the first part of the post, so if you’re interested, you can read the post (or not). Generally, there are only three or four reviews a day so only those posts would have significant content outside of the feed. The format of the main blog has not changed at all (I was unclear if you felt this changed, so this is just me clarifying, and if I misunderstood, please let me know!) – it has always been formatted so only the first image and the review are visible on the first page, everything else is behind a “cut” to manage costs of image hosting, server load, etc. When I click a link in our email feed, it takes me directly to the post and loads all parts of the content – images, review, etc.

Thanks for your feedback!

I would just like to say a massive thanks for all that you do. I’ve been an avid reader of your blog for so, so long but very rarely comment, I just absorb the wealth of information that you provide and it has proven absolutely invaluable for me on several occasions when I have been trying to make a decision about whether to buy something. I know that when things change, people will either love it or hate it and there will invariably be issues that people come across. But considering that none of us guys pay you to do this, and you seemingly do it all from the goodness of your own heart (although I bet you enjoy it massively as well!), I think your blog is absolutely fantastic and I really appreciate all that you do and long may it continue!

We try to approve comments within 24 hours (and reply to them within 72 hours) but can sometimes get behind and appreciate your patience! 🙂 If you have general feedback, product review requests, off-topic questions, or need technical support, please contact us directly. Thank you for your patience!
