MAC for Gareth Pugh: Hyper Nail Lacquer

MAC Hyper Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep blue with violet pearl” with a frost finish. It’s a really inky blue with fine blue shimmer and a violet edge. It flashes blue and violet, depending on the light. It’s a really cool shade, and it was the one that wowed me the most out of the three from this launch. China Glaze Blue Year’s Eve is a much lighter variation, but it’s more vibrant. It also reminded me of Orly Lunar Eclipse except a bluer variation with finer shimmer. It was opaque in two coats, and the formula had a good, fluid consistency that flowed evenly across the nail without bubbling or streaking.

Just to reiterate, this comes in a square glass bottle compared to MAC’s rounded jar, and the cap is a glossy black rather than a rubberized black. These are slightly smaller (0.30 vs. 0.34 fl. oz.) and $8.00 more because of the “couture” aspect of the launch. Though I have not tested the polishes specifically from this collection, MAC’s nail lacquer formula generally wears for a week with minor tip wear but no chips.

Try Sally Hansen “Laser” HD polish layered over black or navy. More duochrome than this one, and just plain gorgeous. Not terribly opaque on it’s own, but I slap a coat or two of Laser over one coat of CND Midnight Sapphire (a lovely 1-coat wonder) and I’m good to go.

The HD line is rife with duds but Laser is an absolutely STUNNING polish. You can wait for a sale and pick it up for very little. 🙂

Does this remind anyone of the Naughty Nauticals one they brought out a few years ago? I have that one tucked away somewhere but would be good if someone could do a comparison so I’m not itching to buy it if it’s the same! I love love LOVE anything navy blue 

would you classify this as a duochrome? Was reading your description but wasn’t sure if it is. it’s a nice color but i think that there a few dupes out there – you’ve pointed out 2 already which we don’t get here in Asia, but in our local Sasa stores, we can probably find a few locally-made polishes in those shade variations. not too sure why blue is such a hot color here though 🙂

I want to love this color so much because it’s amazing in the bottle. But the duochrome falls flat with the actual application on the nail. Same with Ascension. And for the price, I almost want to return it now.

Waouh it’s really a beautiful blue colour ! I think it’s the only thing I’ll purchase from Gareth Pugh’s collection because there a two wonderful collections that will follow ( Iris Apfel + Daphne Guinness ), M.A.C is great but they launch so many collections per year, it’s impossible to buy from each of them.
