MAC Fall Colour: Eyeshadows

MAC Fall Colour Eyeshadows ($15.00 for 0.05 oz.) include four limited edition shades and one permanent repromote in the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and will roll out internationall in October. These include: Blue Candy (clean blue), Passionate (real mid-tone red), Royale (clean violet), Shock-a-holic (deep purple), and Three Ring Yellow (yellow green).

  • Blue Candy is a bright medium blue; it’s like a really intense sky blue–a little cyan. This has a satin finish. The color payoff was good, and the texture was easy to work with. It reminded me of Urban Decay Clash but bluer. It’s lighter than both MAC Blue Calm and MAC Electric Eel.
  • Passionate is a bright pinky-red. This has a matte finish. It’s one of the easiest matte shades to work with by MAC, actually; good color payoff and soft enough to blend but not so soft that it is powdery.
  • Royale is a bluish violet with a matte finish. It’s a gorgeous shade, and it’s one that you may find the most inconsistency in how it looks online, because it really messes with cameras. I had the actual pot next to me to ensure the photos I have are as accurate as I can get them. It’s purpler than MAC Atlantic Blue but softer than Inglot #388. It is similar to MAC Cobalt but with infinitely better color payoff and texture (perhaps a touch bluer). It is lighter than NARS Outremer. It has good color payoff and applies well–not too dry or stiff.
  • Shock-a-holic is a medium-dark purple with subtle red undertones. This has a satin finish. The closest shade I could think of was Inglot #386, which is slightly redder. While the color payoff is decent, it is dry, so it can skip and look uneven if you aren’t careful.
  • Three Ring Yellow is a green-tinged yellow; it’s almost chartreuse but yellower. I imagine this might be the color one would be if they were seasick… This has a veluxe pearl finish (so it’s actually 0.04 oz. of product), which gives it a dense, buttery texture with great color payoff. It is yellower than a lot of potential dupes (think MAC Chartreuse, MAC Double Feature 2, etc.).

First, as you might have noticed, my Passionate is just a pan; mine is actually a depot from whenever it originally launched (I believe it was C-Shock).  None of the five here were problematic at all.  Shock-a-holic was the most finicky, while the other four were nice.  These are really bright, in-your-face kind of shades, and I think those who have longed more for matte or semi-matte finishes will find the answer with these.  The only one that really has noticeable shimmer is Three Ring Yellow.

Great swatches, Christine! I just wanted to ask, do you know how Royale compares to Violet Trance? I’m sure the color payoff is better with Royale but I’m wondering if it is bluer.

Mo Avatar

Dang! I didn’t think I’d want Blue Candy because I thought it was exactly like Electric Eel or Clarity (matte2) but it looks just like Hi-Def Cyan. So pretty. I may have to grab that one and Three Ring Yellow.

Chelle Avatar

So true, just not nearly as pigmented.

I need to see Shock-a-holic in person, wonder if the different finish will make a difference in pigmentation.

Jenn Avatar

I have seen a swatch of shock-o-holic next to the Sugarpill Purple and they are practically identical, but I agree SP definitely more pigmented! I love my shadows from them.

Tina Avatar

Hm, good number of re-releases in this collection. Pretty, but will pass. Also, not everyone wears their clothing and makeup by what fashion dictates. Can people please stop complaining about how these aren’t ‘fall colors’?

Mo Avatar

I agree. I know they’re not what most people are accustomed to as fall colors but wear what you want, when you want. If you don’t like colors like these for fall, then get em and hold on to them for the next spring/summer.

Maureen Avatar

Actually, what people are neglecting is… this IS basically what fashion is “dictating” this year. We’re seeing a lot more bright colors as well as new versions of tried-and-true stuff. Like, there’s the Illamasqua collection and the Mac Me Over collection, but then we’ve also got this, Cindy Sherman, OCC Pretty Boy, and let’s not forget Missonigate 2011 that just happened with Target.

Chelsea Avatar

I’m getting really burned out on the bright makeup trend. I know it’s still going strong, but lately I find myself reaching for my neutrals, whether it’s face or nails.

Candy Avatar

Is this Shock-a-holic better then the one that was in the Dare to Wear collection? I hated it in that collection, which was a shame, since the color looked beautiful in the pan.

Veronica Avatar

They’re gorgeous, but these strike my eye as having a distinctly warm tone to me. While working with them, did you feel they’d work well enough with both skin tones?

Christine Avatar

I believe you can wear any color you want, but it depends on how you wear them – e.g. what you wear on the eyes, lips, cheeks, etc. These shades are cool-toned overall – Three Ring Yellow is the only one that’s particularly warm, but even that one is only slightly.

Lauren C Avatar

i totally agree with this.. I’m a makeup artist and truly believe no skin tone should limited in what they can wear, it just all depends on what you pair it with on your cheeks and lips!

Veronica Avatar

Wow, it must be my monitor, then. Some of them look almost neon on my screen. o_0

Thank you for your thoughtful response, though! I really like the choice of bright colors for fall, but I’m admittedly a little shy when it comes to really bold eye colors. Maybe I can use this collection as an excuse to branch out. 😀

Elizabeth Avatar

Thank you so much for every review you do Christine! You have never steered me wrong in any product I have bought and I always try to see if you have done a review before I buy a product. It really helps.

Does Three Ring Yellow compare at all to Sweet & Punchy? Is it way more yellow? Thanks : )

Violet Avatar

When I first saw the picture before the cut, I thought Sugarpill had come out with new colours.

Ngl, I’m disappointed it wasn’t Sugarpill as I can’t get MAC in Norway.

Diana Avatar

Are any of these colors available for the pan palette or just individual? also is it me or does “three ring yellow” look very similar to “mangrove” from NARS?

Hannah Avatar

I’m not sure if anyone has noticed this, but the MAC website also sells Passionate in a pan form. Would this be the same color as the passionate released in this line? The description of both colors on the MAC website is the same. Does anyone know if they are different, if at all??

yesterday i went to mac and make them note i want this blue candy e.s .Lady ‘ll call me when they arrived . It’s exactly like you said at your vids. with mac , it depends on how many product shop carries . because my mac generally brings so little amount of product and we i never get what i want . never! .for example yesterday they didn’t have snob , you know the good-old snob lipstick!
