MAC Eggplant Blend Studio Sculpt Shade & Line ($21.00 for 0.06 oz.) contains pink and silver eyeshadows with a plum eyeliner. The Studio Sculpt Shade & Line Eyeshadows can be used wet “for a defined look with super-saturated colour” or dry for “medium buildable coverage.” The eyeliner shade was poor, oh so sad, with its incredibly sheer color payoff and dry, stiff texture–it was so challenging to even get a smidgen of color to show up. I had better luck with the eyeshadows, but they weren’t great; still on the powdery side with varying pigmentation. The wear, though, has been rather consistent, as this one clocked in at eight hours before there was noticeable fading.

Eggplant Blend #1 is described as a “soft light pink.” It’s a light-medium, yellow-toned pink with a frosted finish. Applied dry, it was very sheer, and then applied with a dampened brush, it was semi-sheer. It was somewhat powdery when it was dry. Ulta Pink (P, $10.00) is very similar but more metallic. MAC Pink Sensibilities #3 (LE, $21.00) is darker. Urban Decay Minor Sin (LE, $18.00) is similar. MAC Invincible Light (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Giorgio Armani #29 (LE, $33.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Eggplant Blend #2 is described as a “deep plum.” It’s a dark, subtly cool-toned burgundy purple with a satin finish and a hint of gold shimmer. Using this shade was an exercise in frustration–it didn’t matter whether it was wet or dry, it was sheer and had the most stubborn, difficult-to-use texture. I tried using it as an eyeliner as well as an eyeshadow, but I just couldn’t get it to perform. bareMinerals In Vogue (LE) is lighter. bareMinerals Starry Night (LE, $14.00) is lighter, cooler-toned. MAC Pinkluxe #5 (P) is similar. MAC Deceit (LE, $21.00) is also similar. L’Oreal Smoldering Plum (P, $7.99) is more shimmery. Illamasqua Queen of the Night (P, $25.50) is more shimmery. Make Up For Ever #79 (P, $20.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Eggplant Blend #3 is described as a “dirty silver-grey.” It’s a light-medium, lightly warmed-up gray with a frosted, slightly metallic, finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff when applied dry, which was just slightly smoother and more pigmented when applied damp. Ulta Silver (P, $10.00) is lighter. L’Oreal Silver Sky (757) (P, $7.99) is more sparkly. MAC Virgin Silver (LE) is a cream product. MAC Extra Silver (LE, $19.50) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

That eggplant shade…I can’t believe MAC would release that. I know they are always releasing new products, but maybe they should edit a little bit more.

Another dismal release from MAC… when will they learn? I haven’t bought a MAC product in over a year at this point, I just can’t stand that their quality has taken such a massive nose dive.

Completely agree- if I do buy from them it’s to repurchase something I’ve used up- like Fix +. I did buy one of the repromotes in Hoop, but that was the first non- repurchase I had made in a long time. There are just too many good brands out there now to have to settle for subpar products.

Sometimes I think the focus is on “innovative,” but innovative isn’t enough if there isn’t at least the quality to back it up–at least if you’re going to put out shades we’ve seen before. If these were somehow colors we’d never seen before, slight decrease in quality would be easier to overlook (though we shouldn’t!).

I agree about the idea being a great one. But I’ve become more than a little ticked off at their less than acceptable quality with a lot of their products. It’s like they know women will be in a frenzy to buy it so they don’t really have to be too concerned about it being good…. That makes me angry.

You make it look so pretty on the eye…but those swatches aren’t impressive. MAC seems to be falling a little flat this spring…I like the Patentpolish (though not all) because I like sheer lips…despite shorter wear time. But the rest of the releases have left me so underwhelmed!
Any one MAC product this spring that you can recommend as a can’t live without?
So glad I can see your swatches before jumping!

So disappointing because this looks lovely in the pan. I have to agree with Andie (and plenty of others, I’m sure) about MAC releasing so many sub-standard products. Time was, I couldn’t wait for MAC’s LE product releases but over the years, so many have been of such poor quality that I rarely get that old “itch” to grab whatever new things have come out. I think they are really damaging their own image and perception, at least among those of us who’ve been buying makeup for some time.

Wow, whoever is in charge of quality control over at MAC seriously needs to be replaced. I can’t believe how much their products have done downhill over the past year. You would think that someone would make the executive decision to put out fewer, higher quality collections than this literally UNWEARABLE crap every month.

Sigh.. Your blog is the place people go to! It’s an encyclopedia of most everything beauty! I understand what you’re saying, but I think you’re doing the right thing for the thousands who visit here to find out if or how they should spend their money… As well, it’s a fabulous letter to Mac, echoed by many, with the sentiments that they are GOOD and should be representing that instead of tragic failures. There are always positives. Let’s hope Mac gets the point. You’re as revered, in your own way, as they are.. Think about it. 🙂
Regarding Mac, I sent you an email I hope was alright to do. <3 Lotus

You’re so welcome! I’m humbled by you and your beauty blog! I came here during a cosmetic transitory time because it was the most positive and informative. It has been, and continues to be, a kind retreat for me. I enjoy it tremendously and I understand the email thing. I’m patient. 🙂 <3 Lotus
