MAC Bleu Velvet Nail Lacquer Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Bleu Velvet Nail Lacquer
MAC Bleu Velvet Nail Lacquer

MAC Bleu Velvet Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “light periwinkle blue [with a cream finish].” It’s a dusty, bluish purple with a cream finish. Unfortunately, I couldn’t think of anything that was all that close to this shade. Zoya Caitlin is much, much darker. Zoya Skylar is a bit bluer, sparkly, and several shades darker. Neither of those two really compare to this shade.

I like the colors MAC chooses for their nail lacquers, but I am, more often than not, incredibly disappointed by the quality and application of their formula–particularly because their price point is higher (it is more expensive than their regular lipstick and eyeshadow!). If you’re going to put a more premium price tag on your polish, you have to make sure your formula is on point. I think that the bristles MAC uses for their brushes are too sharp or large. The formula wasn’t too thick or too thin, and the color coverage seems to be there–if it weren’t for the streakiness. I tried applying a thinner initial coat followed by a thicker second coat, but unfortunately, the thicker coat couldn’t cover all of the streakiness.

This is a great blue! If it were any other brand than MAC I would by it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately I absolutely hate their nail polish formula, so I’ll be passing on this one.

I’ve found that with MAC polishes, the best way to apply is two very thick, almost flooded coats. That way there’s no streakiness and the polish also dries faster with this technique. Sounds silly, but you should give it a try.

The L’Oreal Versailles collection promoted similar shades, but their blue is closer to a true blue I think – still similar though, and I thought the formula was pretty decent.

Will MAC ever be able to make good polish? I agree that the brush is a big part of the problem. But I heard that China Glaze Fade into Hue from the Avant Garden collection is a decent dupe. Way cheaper and I’m sure it has a much better formula!

this reminds me so much of essie bikini so teeny and opi you are such a budapest (euro collection)… a lot of companies are coming out of colors like this. I honestly don’t think anyone should put up with a poor formula no matter how good the color is, and especially for the mac price tag!

I am sooo sorry to say I agree. MAC nail lacquer is a series of duds these days, can’t remember the last time I was tempted to buy one. Many brands with lower price points are producing much more advanced, interesting nail refinements. And Christine is right, the brush is awful. Manufacturers could sell a lot more of ALL nail lacquers if they would just follow advice from OPI. Make the bottles and brushes user-friendly.
