MAC Art Supplies Collection:  Overall Review & Round-up

OVERALL, Art Supplies is either totally up your alley or something you can easily skip. It’s not really a must-have collection, but it offers some nice pieces and some not-so-fabulous pieces.

The Pearlglide Eyeliners were my favorite part of the launch. They’re all fabulously pigmented and the shade range is excellent. There are a few similar-to shades, but if you’ve missed out on previous Pearlglide launches, they’re nice to pick up. The formula on them is awesome: soft, smooth, and intense color pay off. On me, they wear all day without budging, smudging, or fading. (Note: as far as I have heard, these are not waterline safe.)

No matter how hard I try to (or want to!) love the Lipstain Markers, I just can’t! Shade-wise, I really loved the color of Full of Flare, Purposefully Red, and Stylesetter. These went on very intensely and evenly. If you don’t mind wearing your stain with lip balm or a gloss on top (or just plan to use it as a lipstick base), then those are some shades to consider.

The Lipstain Markers are much, much more wearable when paired with other products–whether you use a balm, gloss, or lipstick on top, the additional product helps keep your lips from dehydrating with just the stain on them. It also helps to keep the stain on and from rubbing off. Purposefully Red is particularly nice for those who love the look of red lips but not the maintenance–the stain itself seems superior to the other shades, too, and a little balm or gloss will make it work.

I think the Greasepaint Sticks are a fun concept, but the ultra dark color range is almost overdone. When I use darker bases, I find that many will “eat” any color you put on top, so I just don’t see the need to own eight different dark bases. They are all smooth and pigmented, so you can’t go wrong with any of the shades. Slick Black is a great solid black eyeliner or base, but if you already own several, you may find it redundant.

Once again, Thanks for your review!

I’ve never tried the pearlglide eyeliners before but I definitely love them! They don’t budge or smear and stay on forever. Ooops on the waterline safety. I used them on my lower waterline and had no problems but will not be doing that again…

make_up_maven Avatar

Hi Christine – thanks for the review. I called MAC today to confirm the safety issue and was told that the Pearlglides are, in fact, NOT safe to use on the waterline and the Greasepaint Sticks ARE.

Unfortunately, I find the GPS useless and will be returning them – I did however get all the pearlglides and love them all!!

I’m in love with all of the Pearlglide Eyeliners..I love the rich dark colors! super wearable. I’m going to have to pass on the lipstains..since stains never work for me.

Rowan Avatar

I love charred mauve and below ground. Beautiful Iris e/s looks amazing over charred mauve! Below ground and amber lights….*drool* I want to get the greengrease stick too!

Dana Avatar

I picked up two pearlglides in Almost Noir and Black Line! Love them 🙂 I’ve really been needing a deep green (Black Line is black with some green/gold shimmer) and a plum.

I took a trip to the MAC counter to check the collection. I was going to buy Black Line but when I swatched it, it reminded me of Buried Treasure Powerpoint. Black Line is darker but they are very close (to me). Also, Designer Purple looks just like Rave to me…the former has more glitter. I did like Undercurrent, Zinc Zone and Greengrease but my funds are low. I hope they are not the popular ones because I’ll wait patiently for them to make a debut at my local CCO 🙂

regina Avatar

Tonite I bought Greengrease and Dirty GPS plus Undercurrent and Designer Purple PG. I found it awesome to wear Humid over Greengrease. That was a perfect combo!

i agree with most of the girls. this line just isnt that impressive. for an art supply collection i would expect something cooler thats versatile.

Well I splurged and bought in Pearlglides, Almost Noir, Industrial, and Undercurrent. In the greaspaints I bought Greengrease, Uniformally blue, Zinc Zone and Dirty. I was hoping that Petrol Blue would be my ticket to getting a pearlglide like Fly By Blue, but for some reason I am not totally in love with it like I was for fly by blue so I think im gonna go ahead and try to get that one off of ebay. Undercurrent is very pretty, but it is almost exactly like Covet with Urban Decay except it has a lot more gold glitter in it, so I might take that one back since I have Covet already. Surprisingly, Industrial turned out to be my favorite Pearlglide.

Carrie Avatar

I think I’ll only be getting Black Line and Petrol Blue. I’ve been looking for a smooth, dark blue liner. I have no interest in the Markers. They’d probably make my lips look really dry and I wonder how long they’ll last before drying out.

Brian Kelly Avatar

They’re an interesting concept but the prices again hold me back from even wanting to buy the lipstains even if I like them. I just refuse to pay for lip products that cost more than $14.

bxboricua Avatar

Got Black Line and Undercurrent today and they are just beautiful! I wore Black Line all day and it didn’t budge. Why isn’t it safe to put it in the water line? Does the glitter cause irritation?

Claudine Avatar

So a girlfriend and I went to pick up our picks today after work. I purchased all the Pearlglide Eyeliners. My word, how have I not discovered these before? I still have the swatches on my hand after hours and a couple of trips to the sink. These are amazing. I need more!

As far as the Greasepaint sticks, I only picked up Below Ground and Greengrease. The others ones did not pop out for me or I have other Greasesticks that can substitute for those colours. And I completely agree with you where they can sometimes just eat anything you put over them.

I didn’t even care for the Lipstain Markers. I have too much of a love for classic lipstick in a tube.

Thanks for your review Christine.

PS: Cruel April Fools joke. I was so excited and loved the colours!

Hiromi Avatar

I bought All the GPS and Pearlglide Eyeliners. I am in LOVE!
I skipped Lipstain Markers – I am afraid it will dry up my lips, plus I love re-apply lipsticks + glosses throughout the day.

Christine-

It was great meeting you today, I was definitely excited. After you had asked me if I was getting anything from the new collection, and I said that I wasn’t, I actually went by the display and fell in love with Black Line and Designer Purple. I have WAY too many purple and black eyeliners, but these were just too yummy to pass up.

Also, you are really pretty without makeup. 🙂

I picked up Purposefully Red, Full of Flare and Point of View today. Lets see how it goes. I went to a mac pro master class a few weeks ago and they debuted them for us and i was very impressed. of course you have to have well conditioned lips before applying then blot off the excess – this will make them a tad less drying. I’m hoping for a good stain/base. keep you posted on my luck with them.

I didnt get any greasepaints because i have the colours from the style black collection and many shadesticks in similar colours – sharkskin is pretty close to zinczone. and the Relaxed s/s that came out in warm n cozy is a comparable dupe for below ground. The only one i may go back for is greengrease because i found it the most unique.

I also passed on the pearleglides… they are fantastic but i have many other lines (eg UD 24/7) that are comparable colours. I found that by using the eyeshadows from style black (blue flame and young punk) over a basic purple or blue liner it was almost identical to the glitter effect of designer purple and petrol blue! try it and see for yourself – its likely the exact same glitter particles they added to this product. undercurrent is one I am thinking of going back for… i couldnt find a liner than was a comparable substitute. industrial is nice too but i think i can just use a pigment or shadow as a line if i want that effect as a line – doesnt justify owning the liner for the few times i may be going for that look.

Andrea Avatar

I think I’m definitely getting Dirty and Zinc Zone cause I think they make good bases. The others I won’t be too sad to pass on.

Hi Christine!

Thanks so much for your reviews!
Without you, I wouldn´t even know that there IS an mac art supplies collection!
I love mac, but recently I am a bit irritated by their international policy. The complete collection (and before other collections like Riveting or Lilliyland) is only available online in germany!
I really don´t understand why! I would be very interested in the lipmarkes, but without even trying, I won´t buy them of course!
I ordered an eyeliner and a greasepaintstick, only based on YOUR reviews!
And we can´t give the stuff back here in germany when it´s used.
The greasepaintstick in dirty was sold out on the 1st day they put in online, so I really asked myself if they maybe had only 5 pieces of each product for whole germany?!?! 😉
Anyway, do you know something about that, maybe girls in other countries have the same problem?
Or do you know someone to talk/email to? It´s really annoying!
Thanks for your help and HAPPY EASTER!!!

Tanja

LOL! Sometimes they do have low stock–at least in stores. I know for us, sometimes a store will get less than 5 of a single shade, which just seems ridiculous…

Your best bet is to email customer service via MAC Germany, which may or may not be super responsive, but it’s the only place I can think of.

s Avatar

this collection not only gives color variety, it contains prodcuts that last all day. the greasepaints are water resistant and the pearlglides are transfer resistant. the lipstain markers don’t dry the lip out…put on lip conditioner first. 😉

s Avatar

the greasepaints and pearlglide liners are all reformulated and safe for the waterline…so for those of you who think they look similar to previous colors you should realize that these are more versatile. definitely all a must have for a true makeup artist

queenfrostine Avatar

Definitely in the lovin’ it category. I spent twice as much on this collection than I generally do on any single MAC collection. Wasn’t as crazy about the lip markers as I had hoped, but that wasn’t unexpected. I love the idea of lipmarkers, but seldom like them as much as a reality. The greasepaint sticks and pearlgride pencils more than made up for the marker disappointment. It was harder to figure out which ones I didn’t want than what I wanted. All 6 shades of the liners were big hits with me, and the greasepaints were everything I wish shadesticks had been. Glide on much more smoothly ad evenly and with much better pigmentation. Wish they’d release some in lighter or brighter shades!

Mia Avatar

Wasn’t planning to get any of these but stopped into MAC over the weekend and swatched several. I picked up the Point of View lip stain and top it with a touch of Resort Life Lipgelee. I like it 🙂

On my to get list, Brown Now Greasepaint stick (will look awesome topped with Twinks), and I don’t own any blues so am going for Petrol liner (& a few blue shadows).
