Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick Set
Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick Set ($39.00 for 9 x 0.04 oz.) includes nine, mini-sized shades from the permanent range (all of them can be had individually, if desired). Overall, I didn’t find that the formula of the minis to be different from the full-sized shades I have. The formula is a drier, stiffer consistency that often drags and tugs on the lips. Some of the lighter shades look almost chalky on, while some of the more red-hued mattes seem to be least problematic. The shimmery shades are usually creamier, but they tend to be less pigmented. The brand claims that these will “comfortably coat lips with bold color for 10 hours” (they even claim “one swipe application). Wear time varies but tends to be longer than the average lipstick, though shorter than the 10-hour wear claim. I do not find the formula comfortable to wear, and it’s hard to apply color in “one swipe” since they drag a lot. Some shades are drying, some are neither drying nor hydrating, which is far from the brand’s claim that the formula will leave “lips feeling supple.” The caps of these come off very easily, so you may not want to carry them in your purse. Mine have just been sitting in a plastic bin, and I had problems with them coming off any time products shifted around at all (unusual–can’t say I specifically recall this being an issue with another brand, or the full-sized versions).
Note: as I had already fully reviewed and tested about half of these shades, I didn’t reshoot the product photos for those particular shades. I only retested Agatha, as it was the only one that seemed noticeably different than the full-sized I had. Shades I hadn’t reviewed before were photographed and tested as normal.
Agatha is a light, pink-tinged beige with a matte finish. This is one of the more drying shades in the range, and the full-sized version I have was noticeably drier and stiffer to use than the mini in the set, which did apply more evenly and with better color coverage. I retested using the mini, and it lasted for six hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Lovecraft is a muted, rosy mauve with a matte finish. The color lasted for seven hours. It was one of the better-applying shades, but it will wear away unevenly (center first). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Wonderchilde is a brightened, magenta purple with fuchsia undertones and violet shimmer. The color wore well for six hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. It had a creamier consistency that helped it apply and feel more comfortable, though it wasn’t full coverage. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Sexer is a bright, fuchsia pink with cool undertones and fuchsia micro-shimmer over a semi-matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency was lightly dry and tugged somewhat, but it did lay down even color. It wore well for eight hours on me and was slightly drying over time. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Countess is a bold, brightened orange-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It dragged just slightly, but it was nicely pigmented and lasted for eight hours. It was a little drying but not uncomfortable. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Adora is a medium-dark, warm-toned red with metallic ruby red shimmer over a matte finish. This is one of the best shades in the range, as it does last well for ten hours, isn’t drying, and has enough creaminess that it isn’t painful to apply. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Hexagram is a medium-dark red with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage with a lightly dry consistency, so there was some drag. Luckily, it wasn’t so dry that it interfered with the resulting color, as I was able to get it to look smooth and even. It lasted for eight and a half hours and was a little drying. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Bachelorette is a brightened, pinky-red with almost warm undertones and a matte finish. It had fairly opaque pigmentation, while it had the same slightly dry, stiffer consistency which made it drag and pull at the lips when applied from the tube as other shades in the range. It did wear for seven and a half hours, and it was somewhat drying. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Motorhead is a deepened, reddish-burgundy. It has such a stiff, painful-to-use consistency. This shade wears for eight hours, but it is incredibly drying while worn, and it doesn’t look great on as it is uneven. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Sexer and Wonderchilde are speaking to me on a spiritual level…
Do you think you’ll get the set?
LOL! Thought it was just me. They’re the only reasons I’m considering this set. I could live without the full sized versions at this price
Thank you for the reviews! Lovecraft seems like it would be a perfect color for me, but I’m not thrilled about the rating. I’ll look through the dupe list and see if I can find one I like better 🙂
No prob, Jess!
Wow I wasn’t expecting to like any of these after your last reviews, and was kind of scrolling fast past the swatches until I thought, wait, these are actually kind of pretty… The pinks, oranges, and reds are lovely and have a nice matte finish! I still have Lullaby on my wish list but I”m really on the fence about it.
If you really love your mattes, it might be worth trying one sometime if you’re at a Sephora to see if you like it.
This is such a good way of trying these lipsticks although the cap situation is going to be annoying for sure!
Display only lipsticks, haha!
I am not tempted by the formula at all, but I have a real soft spot for minis and sets! Can’t get over how cute the packaging is, but I guess it’s not worth it having so many lipsticks that I won’t ever wear lying around 😉
Minis are cute 😉
Really love all the swatches 🙂 My fav is Wonderchilde .. quite a unique color.
I’m going to pass on this though .. not a fan of mini’s .. they someone disappear in my hand bag and I’m not a fan of digging .. lol.
Monica.
LOL! They’re always interesting to store/organize with.
Make Up For Ever rouge artist intense #15 is pretty close to Wonderchilde, a little darker but it’s higher quality.
I am still just so broken up that most of these lipsticks perform so poorly! I love the design, the names, the colors. They just look sooooo awful and whatnot. AGH! How sad!!
I really wanted it to be a great line, too – huge color range, not too pricey, cool packaging, etc.!
These swatches look *a little* better to me than your original lip shots. I tried a bunch of these but only kept one, a matte called Archangel. It’s dry like Ruby Woo but wears well. I agree the line was a bit of a let down, though. The only one I’d go back for is Lovecraft because I love the color. I think the color selection/variation for this set is pretty good, though! I might’ve replaced Bachelorette with Wolvesmouth or Gothica.
As I was scrolling through I was thinking “that blush looks so good on Christine, I have to look at the bottom,” and then I saw it was Crazed Imagination, and I was like, yep! I remember I loved it on you the first time around.
I would have loved to see at least one more off-beat color – maybe Poe or Slayer (prefer Poe, since it was really good).
I just got this set yesterday! I had wanted to try some of the colors when this formula originally came out, but wasn’t willing to invest in the full size of any of them after your initial reviews. Several of them are definitely stiffer to apply and they are drying overall, but I am glad I made the purchase. Wearing Motorhead to the office today (for Halloween) and I am liking it ok so far. Definitely not as comfortable as some of my other lipsticks, but I’m ok with that for occasional wear.
Glad you’re liking the set, and happy you were able to try ’em as a set, so it’s way more affordable!
yikes… agatha is making my lips dry just looking at it 🙁
lol!
Motörhead looks awful, but honestly the rest look cool… I think I’ll force myself to pass because of the issues you mentioned though!
You have to really dig drier, matte formulas – like old school mattes, you know?
Oyyyyyy on the caps just popping off. I cannot stand loose caps. No. What’s the point if I can’t take my lipstick with me? Annoying.
Just loose caps EVERYWHERE!
That F on Motorhead still makes me so sad.
You & me both!
i can’t believe you did this to yourself 😀 i definitely wasn’t expecting to see anymore of these lipsticks tested! some of the colors are nice, but certainly not worth the cracked lips!
Because I’m a glutton for punishment, and because some suggested I got duds. Since the set had some shades I hadn’t swatched yet, and with this price point, it was certainly easier to see if I got duds or not than repurchase at full-sized, lol!
Oh my god, Agatha O_O I feel for you for having to wear that, Christine, ouch! Lovecraft is pretty though, but again, the quality, eek!
It’s all good 😉
I got this set in the mail just before two back to back family deaths so I haven’t had any time to play with them with all the traveling I’ve been doing. Def need to pull them out this weekend and have some fun.
Sorry to hear about losses, Arielle! I hope you’re doing all right.
Seeing Motorhead always makes me feel sad 🙁 Ah, what could have been!
Same here!
You’d think the mediocre grade would be warning me to stay away from this, but I’m honestly still kinda tempted? I just love red lipsticks!
Have you tried something like MAC Ruby Woo? These are comparable, some are worse in terms of dryness.
The design for these lipsticks is so cool. For the colours I really like Countess and Motorhead
They did a great job on packaging, for sure!
I actually got this set, a little worried from seeing your previous reviews, but I really don’t regret a thing. I haven’t worn all of them yet, and I already know that I will probably never wear Agatha (hard to work with and I hate concealer-lips nudes), but the rest that I’ve tried are amazing. Especially Adora, OMG. I will definitely run out of this one fast! It’s the best red I have, besides maybe Melted Berry. Hexagram is also lovely- reminds me of cranberries and Thanksgiving! Lovecraft was a bit patchy to apply but I’m a sucker for bright pinks. Wonderchilde, though would be better if it looked as good as it does in the tube, is actually better than I expected. I love purples. And I tried on Motorhead but found it hard to work with like Agatha, but the color is so amazing that I will keep trying. Lipliner? Lip brush? We’ll find out! 😛
Adora is a nice one! 🙂 The upside IS that most shades wear awhile, even if they are difficult to get on and/or are dry to wear.
That is very true! The struggle is worth it I guess 😀 And Adora makes me giddy when I put it on. The metallic-ness, omg!
I liked quite a few, but I’ll not order the set. Wonderchilde is a lovely colour, in the future I might order it, if I can’t find MAC Violetta, is that a pro lipstick?
Thanks for testing these, you looked lovely in all of them even the real low grade ones. Job well done!
Violetta was Pro, but then they made it… semi-pro – it is available at select locations, I think.
I was surprised to see you picked this up after the not so great turnout with the full sized 1’s. They are awfully cute to look at tho, I really like the packaging.
There was some inconsistency in experiences, so it seemed like a decent way to double check (without paying full price for full sizes), plus four other shades to put in the gallery for readers 🙂 But really, I’m just a glutton for punishment.
Why, why, why did they include Agatha and Motorhead, but not Poe? Are they nuts? At least the reds look good.
Life is cruel. I’m more surprised Slayer isn’t in it, though!
I’m obsessed with minis and little sets like this and even though a lot of people were talking about returning this set, I still got it. I’m not sure if it was because I was expecting something completely awful, but this set isn’t TOO bad. I love Sexer and Wonderchilde! Agatha and Motorhead are awful!!
Happy to hear you’re loving a few of the shades 🙂
ugh, thank god this set doesn’t have Gothica in it or I’d still, despite all reason and logic, be tempted to pick it up. even with the disappointing formula I’m such a sucker for some of these colors/finishes and I love mini sets. UGH.
Awwwww!
the people at kat von d probably hate you for your honest reviews on their lipsticks
Here’s hoping they don’t! 🙂
Some of my lipsticks from last years collection feel like playdoh on my lips, with the stickiest consistancy. I didn’t know lipsticks expire so soon. Make me not want to buy this set.
Whoa, that isn’t good at all!
I purchased this set to give me an idea of the product. Four of the shades I would buy, the others are okay with a gloss. It gave me a chance to try different shades to see if I like the color, since there comparable shades in other lines. It is great way to try different shades without overspending.
I agree – especially since this seems to be a very love/hate formula!
Thank you SO much for reviewing this!! I’m about to purchase it for Christmas, and couldn’t find many good, indepth reviews! I think I’ll still buy it, since dry formulas don’t seem to bother me. Thanks girl!
So glad I could help, Jackie! xo
This is swaying me even further towards getting the set because Sexer looks so nice. Definitely a lot of reds in this set… I’d say a few too many for me, since I don’t always wear reds (yet I have several of them as it is haha). I’m not sure if this would be a good idea to get if it would only add more reds to my pile.
Did you end up getting it, Brittany?
Nah, not for now, at least. I may get it if it’s still available closer to Christmas if I can afford to. 🙂
