Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick

Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte pitch black.” It’s a medium-dark black with subtle warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. MAC Hautecore (LE, $16.00) is glossier. Make Up For Ever #50 (P, $19.00) is more opaque, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I was really surprised to find this shade to have semi-opaque color coverage (where’s the “one-swipe payoff” they claim?). The consistency was a little creamier than a lot of the other mattes, but the lack of opacity made it look uneven applied to the lips. The formula dragged a little when applying, but it was more comfortable to use and wear than other shades in the matte finish that I’ve tried. It lasted for five and a half hours on me (not nearly the 10-hour wear time promised), though it didn’t feel drying over time. It has a creme brulee scent but no discernible taste.

Aw, i wish this one performed better! Are you going to review the NYX Macaron lipsticks by any chance? They have some funky shades, and their black seems to perform quite well for a drugstore lipstick!

As bad as this looks, its still a step up from what we had to do back in the day-either layer black eye pencil with lip balm, or mix black eyeshadow with vaseline/lip balm, LOL! That said, there are better options these days, at half the price. Manic Panic does a really good one, and Portkand Black Lipstick Co. is said to do a really amazing one. Both brands do a wide range of “alternative” shades, and are probably worth looking into. PBL Co. also does samples for $2, each!

Yeah, I definitely want to check out that one, but I was thinking about the whole line in general. I picked up a trio of KvD lipsticks on clearance a while back, and fell in love with the formula, and it seemed they ran consistent through the line. With the more traditional shades, it seems they can be duped, or at least close, but with some of the “funkier” shades, there aren’t many other sources… I was pretty excited about some of these shades, and figured they’d be easy enough to pick up at Sephora, but I can’t even be bothered to swatch at this point. I’m a big fan of KvD, and theline, but these are such a fail.

The Portland Black Lipstick black lipstick really is amazing. I use a few of their colors for cosplay – the original black, a fabulous deep indigo (indigo bridge) and a lovely turquoise (difficult island) and they’re all creamy, opaque, blendable, have fantastic coverage, and last forever. Adore.

I don´t think I will ever wear such dark colors on my lips because I´m way too boring for it 😀 But on those pictures it looks so good!! I really need to try it some day as well :p

Nailing the black would’ve made up for a lot of the inconsistency in my mind. At least there’d be an awesome black available at Sephora apart from my beloved OCC Tarred and MUFE. A lot of love should’ve been given to this color. This could’ve been a signature color. I’ve only used her liquid lipsticks and the Lock-It foundation when it was in Light 42, but it seems like the old line was much more loved than this dud line.

What I’ve found with super dark colors like this is that you have to either sacrifice pigmentation/evenness or comfort. I usually pick comfort. Some examples I can think of are Pure Heroine and UD Shame. They might not apply quite as perfectly as some of their super matte counterparts but dang are they 1000x more comfortable to wear. When I try to wear one of those longwear matte darks my lips have turned into corn flakes by the end of it.

Have you found this to be the case?

NARS has a SUPER comfy ultra-matte formula. If you like vampy colors, I recommend Volga from their Pure Matte line. Illamasqua also makes some ultra-mattes with a good amount of slip to them in super dark colors (Kontrol is my favorite purple lipstick ever). OCC Lip Tars are drying for some, but to me they’re quite comfortable and many of them very matte.

What a strange color and formula on this one. I got lucky with the few I ordered as they were better performing. Having seen more swatches online and off what seems the worst thing about this collection is how inconsistent the formula is. Even with the few I have there are wide divergences in how stiff they are.
I really like mattes and am willing to suffer a stiffer formula for that full matte coverage. But I look at your pictures and have to wonder at a matte black that doesn’t provide full coverage. I generally like most things on you but an uneven black (with pink showing through) is a tough look for anyone to carry off. Your skin does look nice however. Baffling.

Slayer looks at least okay in the swatch, then on lips it falls short. NYX makes black lip liner called Black Berry, which could save this shade/any other blacks you come across. I think the only “good” weird color has been Poe thus far! The cult favorites are so iffy (Agatha, Adora, L.U.V. for example), as well as the newer shades… She (Kat) swatches (I think) Agatha in her video on Sephora and jeez, it was terrible.

It was SO gross looking. Just awful. I don’t know how she seriously put these bad shades out if she swatched even a few herself. It seems like she has a real interest in this but the grades/the line’s previous reputation is just killing everything.

I wonder if it’s consistent throughout tubes? I mean points off for inconsistencies in formula, but my tube of Slayer was nearly perfect–one-swipe, MAYBE two-swipe color, and no unevenness. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience with yours though! D:

I know some have issues with Lime Crime, but they also do a matte black. It’s part of their Velvetine line, and it’s called Black Velvet. I don’t own it, but it looks on point from swatches online.

Helene Avatar

Pity. The MUFE looks kind of awesome, though. I’ve never tried a black lipstick, I have layered black eyeshadow over dark reds though. I feel a bit of a need for a black lipstick right now. For my wallet’s sake I hope it’s ll pass 😀
I must say, although it’s a bit uneven, and not really black black, it still looks good on you, or you look good wearing it.

A semi-opaque black lipstick is a blight upon the face of cosmetics. It’s the ultimate Go Big or Go Home shade. KVD should be embarassed this is representative of her line.

Veronica Avatar

Yeah, I’ve never seen a sheer black that I really liked unless it was explicitly stated to be made for layering, like YSL’s Gloss Pur Black. My feeling is that black is such an intense color that it must be done opaque or just looks patchy.

Sylirael Avatar

*sigh* Unimpressed rogue is unimpressed. I’ve seen pictures of the black lipstick from the Nyx Macaron Lippie line that look better than this! And that lipstick is, what…a couple of dollars!?

Still! It is not as bad as that beige toothpaste one! 😀 I suppose it could be worse (although that’s still not a reason for a bad lipstick to exist, especially a colour like black that has to be 100% committed).

It’s kind of interesting that you loathe so many of these shades. I have 9 now and think that they’re the best lipsticks I’ve ever tried personally. I get opaque intense color with one layer with so many of them and might have to do two layers with just one or two of them. Also this is the first lipstick line that doesn’t dry my lips out at all. Just proof that body chemistry must affect certain makeup products more than others.
Perhaps its because many of them I’ve bought you haven’t reviewed perhaps?

Laura Avatar

I had so much expectation on this shade. Still looking for a lipstick that looks like urban decay 24/7 eyeliner perversion (am I asking too much? Hahah). Not this time, unfortunately…

Christine, I applaud your patience with these. I have been following your testing of these matte shades. They look lovely in the tubes, but they look painful on you. You have lovely lips and while I may have been intrigued by the colors, I am going to pass based on your experience. I like the old Kat Von D formula, I have 2, and while I do like some formulations of matte lipsticks, these just don’t appear like they are what I want in a lip color. I can’t believe how poorly they perform on you. Most of your other lip pictures are lovely, even if it isn’t a color I like, they look good on you. I don’t mean to offend, but these look ghastly! They are so patchy and blotchy looking. Thanks, I will steer clear of these.
