Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Slayer Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte pitch black.” It’s a medium-dark black with subtle warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. MAC Hautecore (LE, $16.00) is glossier. Make Up For Ever #50 (P, $19.00) is more opaque, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
I was really surprised to find this shade to have semi-opaque color coverage (where’s the “one-swipe payoff” they claim?). The consistency was a little creamier than a lot of the other mattes, but the lack of opacity made it look uneven applied to the lips. The formula dragged a little when applying, but it was more comfortable to use and wear than other shades in the matte finish that I’ve tried. It lasted for five and a half hours on me (not nearly the 10-hour wear time promised), though it didn’t feel drying over time. It has a creme brulee scent but no discernible taste.

ugh why does this formula fail so much
I was honestly so surprised that this shade wasn’t better… I just figured black would be a signature “nail it” kind of shade.
RIKKI!! I found a dupe for the apple green color you liked from the Simpson palette! Here! : http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/m/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=29313053&category=SEARCH+RESULTS
SUPER INEXPENSIVE 🙂
bitchin’~~
I don’t do black lipstick personally, but I do like it on others. LOL..I’m thinking this one isn’t as bad as some of the others. like how I got scroooed on LUV… LOL
LOL! Not as bad but still not great.
Not a very nice black!
Nope!
Is this formula just aiming to get graded every letter in the alphabet? Trying for a full set?
It seems like it!
Aw, i wish this one performed better! Are you going to review the NYX Macaron lipsticks by any chance? They have some funky shades, and their black seems to perform quite well for a drugstore lipstick!
Sorry, I don’t have any!
I am kinda disappointed with these lipsticks, would’ve thought they’d be amazing!
Me too!
As bad as this looks, its still a step up from what we had to do back in the day-either layer black eye pencil with lip balm, or mix black eyeshadow with vaseline/lip balm, LOL! That said, there are better options these days, at half the price. Manic Panic does a really good one, and Portkand Black Lipstick Co. is said to do a really amazing one. Both brands do a wide range of “alternative” shades, and are probably worth looking into. PBL Co. also does samples for $2, each!
MUFE’s is quite nice as well.
Yeah, I definitely want to check out that one, but I was thinking about the whole line in general. I picked up a trio of KvD lipsticks on clearance a while back, and fell in love with the formula, and it seemed they ran consistent through the line. With the more traditional shades, it seems they can be duped, or at least close, but with some of the “funkier” shades, there aren’t many other sources… I was pretty excited about some of these shades, and figured they’d be easy enough to pick up at Sephora, but I can’t even be bothered to swatch at this point. I’m a big fan of KvD, and theline, but these are such a fail.
I thought of the old eyeliner trick too when I read this. There are some early 90s pics of me kicking around with very crusty black lips, ha ha!
The Portland Black Lipstick black lipstick really is amazing. I use a few of their colors for cosplay – the original black, a fabulous deep indigo (indigo bridge) and a lovely turquoise (difficult island) and they’re all creamy, opaque, blendable, have fantastic coverage, and last forever. Adore.
Confirming PBLC as having an incredible black. All their colors are great, actually. But their black is my favorite apart from OCC Tarred.
I can’t get over your skin! Stunning!
Thanks, Mel!
I don´t think I will ever wear such dark colors on my lips because I´m way too boring for it 😀 But on those pictures it looks so good!! I really need to try it some day as well :p
Worth a try 🙂
Well this collection just gets more and more disappointing.
At least Poe is nice :/
Small favors!
Does OCC make a black liptar? If I wanted a black, I think they’re who I’d go to-they seem to be better quality for the money.
Yes, they do!
It’s called Tarred in the permanent Matte formula 🙂
They also make a black lip-and-eye-safe cosmetic colour pencil that’s fantastic. The black lip tar and pencil are both called Tarred.
Nailing the black would’ve made up for a lot of the inconsistency in my mind. At least there’d be an awesome black available at Sephora apart from my beloved OCC Tarred and MUFE. A lot of love should’ve been given to this color. This could’ve been a signature color. I’ve only used her liquid lipsticks and the Lock-It foundation when it was in Light 42, but it seems like the old line was much more loved than this dud line.
Yeah, it definitely seemed like a color you’d just expect to be done well!
What I’ve found with super dark colors like this is that you have to either sacrifice pigmentation/evenness or comfort. I usually pick comfort. Some examples I can think of are Pure Heroine and UD Shame. They might not apply quite as perfectly as some of their super matte counterparts but dang are they 1000x more comfortable to wear. When I try to wear one of those longwear matte darks my lips have turned into corn flakes by the end of it.
Have you found this to be the case?
Not really – there are comfortable mattes that still have great pigmentation and application!
NARS has a SUPER comfy ultra-matte formula. If you like vampy colors, I recommend Volga from their Pure Matte line. Illamasqua also makes some ultra-mattes with a good amount of slip to them in super dark colors (Kontrol is my favorite purple lipstick ever). OCC Lip Tars are drying for some, but to me they’re quite comfortable and many of them very matte.
What a strange color and formula on this one. I got lucky with the few I ordered as they were better performing. Having seen more swatches online and off what seems the worst thing about this collection is how inconsistent the formula is. Even with the few I have there are wide divergences in how stiff they are.
I really like mattes and am willing to suffer a stiffer formula for that full matte coverage. But I look at your pictures and have to wonder at a matte black that doesn’t provide full coverage. I generally like most things on you but an uneven black (with pink showing through) is a tough look for anyone to carry off. Your skin does look nice however. Baffling.
Which ones have you loved so far? Which ones didn’t work out for you, Megan?
I still think this looks beautiful!!! It may not be totally opaque, but it still looks very nice!
Glad you liked it, Lisette!
I’m sad this one didn’t work out. I was looking forward to entertaining my inner goth!
Me too!
Yeah…probably the one colour I’m never going to attempt wearing lol. Even when I went goth for halloween i stuck to a SUPER dark burgundy..heh. Im going to go out on a limb here and say being NOT pitch matte black actually saved this lippie lol
Aww, I love the way black lipstick looks on! It’s so transformative!
Slayer looks at least okay in the swatch, then on lips it falls short. NYX makes black lip liner called Black Berry, which could save this shade/any other blacks you come across. I think the only “good” weird color has been Poe thus far! The cult favorites are so iffy (Agatha, Adora, L.U.V. for example), as well as the newer shades… She (Kat) swatches (I think) Agatha in her video on Sephora and jeez, it was terrible.
I remember seeing a beige on KVD in her video for Sephora and thinking, “Yeah, that looks dry and patchy even here,” lol!
It was SO gross looking. Just awful. I don’t know how she seriously put these bad shades out if she swatched even a few herself. It seems like she has a real interest in this but the grades/the line’s previous reputation is just killing everything.
I was so excited about these studded kiss lipsticks… but they’re all so disappointing! whyyyyy
I wish I knew!
Wow, I’m surprised this one performed so badly. I would have thought Kat Von D would have nailed this one.
Same here, Blanche!
I’m glad I already had two black lipsticks so there was no need for this one! Melt Bane is still a dry-matte, but significantly stronger pigment than this one appears to have.
At least it has the pigmentation!
So beautifully matte though…
I was surprised it wasn’t more matte, actually!
I was hoping this would turn out less patchy than Hautecore but it’s not looking too good so far lol
LOL!
Aww, this is sad. I mean, Nyx makes a perfectly good black that’s way cheaper in their Macaron Lippies range!
Yay for NYX!
I was curious about this one. How disappointing. I had thought the brand would nail this one.
Me too 🙁
It’s sad that this didn’t work out because it could have been such an amazing lipstick! It is hard to believe they didn’t get a black right, of all colours.
I agree! Such a bummer.
I wonder if it’s consistent throughout tubes? I mean points off for inconsistencies in formula, but my tube of Slayer was nearly perfect–one-swipe, MAYBE two-swipe color, and no unevenness. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience with yours though! D:
It seems like the formula is inconsistent, though why is hard to say, because it’s not like the line has been out for 2 years, you know? We all bought ours around the same time!
Yeah, I totally hear you. It’s definitely not a good look for a brand, especially after all the hype leading up to this line.
I know some have issues with Lime Crime, but they also do a matte black. It’s part of their Velvetine line, and it’s called Black Velvet. I don’t own it, but it looks on point from swatches online.
Good thing there are a few brands that do black, so there are options!
That’s interesting. Black lipstick seems to be hard to screw up (going by how many decent versions I’ve seen), but they managed it.
It seems to be an easier nontraditional color to do!
Not sure why I like this but I think because it’s a little sheerer than most black lipsticks. On my bucket list: wear black lipstick out for a day! lol.
Do it!!
I was like “yesss” when I saw the title and “noooo” when I saw the rating. D:
🙁
Boo, that’s a pretty bad black 🙁
It is!
Pity. The MUFE looks kind of awesome, though. I’ve never tried a black lipstick, I have layered black eyeshadow over dark reds though. I feel a bit of a need for a black lipstick right now. For my wallet’s sake I hope it’s ll pass 😀
I must say, although it’s a bit uneven, and not really black black, it still looks good on you, or you look good wearing it.
Thank you, Helene!
It’s sad my excite for this new launch has failed so miserable formula wise. I might need to pick up the lime crime version then. 😉
IT WAS SO EXCITED. Packaging was fun and different, price wasn’t too high, huge shade range. GAH.
And the colour range was so nice to see!
Yikes!!!! What is up with this collection? More effort was put into packaging than the actual product itself. Such a shame.
It seems like it! On the occasion when a reader has had a way better experience than I have on a product, the more it seems like the line may have also have trouble with consistency/quality control 🙁
A semi-opaque black lipstick is a blight upon the face of cosmetics. It’s the ultimate Go Big or Go Home shade. KVD should be embarassed this is representative of her line.
It takes a lot of work to even make sheer black nice, just because you have to get an EVEN layer of sheer going on, or else it just looks splotchy!
Yeah, I’ve never seen a sheer black that I really liked unless it was explicitly stated to be made for layering, like YSL’s Gloss Pur Black. My feeling is that black is such an intense color that it must be done opaque or just looks patchy.
Yikes..have ANY of these been good?! The handful of reviews I’ve seen on these, have just been awful! I tried one on..I think Lullabye and it felt very drying.
Only a couple so far…
*sigh* Unimpressed rogue is unimpressed. I’ve seen pictures of the black lipstick from the Nyx Macaron Lippie line that look better than this! And that lipstick is, what…a couple of dollars!?
Still! It is not as bad as that beige toothpaste one! 😀 I suppose it could be worse (although that’s still not a reason for a bad lipstick to exist, especially a colour like black that has to be 100% committed).
Everything about the brand says this should be a signature, well-done color!
Yikes!!!!!
Such a disappointment!
It’s kind of interesting that you loathe so many of these shades. I have 9 now and think that they’re the best lipsticks I’ve ever tried personally. I get opaque intense color with one layer with so many of them and might have to do two layers with just one or two of them. Also this is the first lipstick line that doesn’t dry my lips out at all. Just proof that body chemistry must affect certain makeup products more than others.
Perhaps its because many of them I’ve bought you haven’t reviewed perhaps?
Maybe you could share what shades you bought and had such great luck with 🙂
I had so much expectation on this shade. Still looking for a lipstick that looks like urban decay 24/7 eyeliner perversion (am I asking too much? Hahah). Not this time, unfortunately…
MUFE’s black lipstick is pretty good! OCC’s is probably good, too.
It sucks to see that this isn’t very pigmented. :\
Agreed!
This could have been it but No the formula just refuse to be good here.. :-/
Exactly!
Christine, I applaud your patience with these. I have been following your testing of these matte shades. They look lovely in the tubes, but they look painful on you. You have lovely lips and while I may have been intrigued by the colors, I am going to pass based on your experience. I like the old Kat Von D formula, I have 2, and while I do like some formulations of matte lipsticks, these just don’t appear like they are what I want in a lip color. I can’t believe how poorly they perform on you. Most of your other lip pictures are lovely, even if it isn’t a color I like, they look good on you. I don’t mean to offend, but these look ghastly! They are so patchy and blotchy looking. Thanks, I will steer clear of these.
It is funny, because sometimes a bad product doesn’t really show its true colors in photos, but then you have these that make it pretty obvious.
