Kat Von D Samson + Delilah Shade + Light Blush Duo
Kat Von D Samson + Delilah Shade + Light Blush Duo ($25.00 for 0.317 oz.) is a new, permanent set of orange-y coral shades with matte finishes. The blush formula is supposed to “stay vibrant for a full 24 hours of wear” with “silky powders” that “blend effortlessly into skin for a flawless, buildable finish.” The marketing makes it unclear what level of pigmentation these should be on Sephora, but per the brand’s Instagram, they are “highly pigmented.” The darker shade lacked pigmentation and had a really firm consistency that made it hard to apply and blend out evenly on the skin. The lighter shade was more pigmented and more blendable, though it was dusty to work with. The two together are more blendable than the dark shade alone, but on my skin tone, it is difficult for the two together to show up noticeably as there is little coverage overall (paired with a lighter color in general, there’s little hope if it’s very sheer!), but I would expect some color to show up on fairer skin tones when mixed — the lighter shade will dominate.
Samson (Shade) is described as a “bright poppy pink.” It’s a medium, orange-coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer coverage that was buildable to semi-sheer after several layers of product. The consistency was firm, chalky, and extremely dry on the skin, and the powder tended to clump as I tried to get product out of the pan. On the skin, the blush applied unevenly and had a tendency to stick in some places but not adhere much (or at all) to other areas. It lasted for eight hours on me. Milani Coral Cove (05) (P, $8.99) is brighter, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Tongue Tied (LE, $8.00) is brighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Summer Fling (P, $10.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Passion for Colour (LE, $24.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). ColourPop Main Chick (DC, $12.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Delilah (Light) is described as a “pale coral.” It’s a light-medium, pink-coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque pigmentation but had a tendency to sheer out easily (so blending was good) as it was dusty and thin. The color lasted for seven and a half hours on me. LORAC Enchanted (LE, $23.00)(95% similar). Sephora Shame On You (01) (P, $14.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). NARS Angel Pride I (LE, $30.00) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Soul Mate (LE, $12.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop Simply Sweet (LE, $8.00) is lighter (90% similar). Smashbox Petunia (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Overexposed (-, ) is darker, more muted (90% similar). MAC Spring Flock (LE, $24.00) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Thnks fr the Mmrs (LE, $8.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Milani Coral Beams #3 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Guerlain Ors et Merveilles #6 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Milani Petal Primavera (P, $7.99) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Hourglass Surreal Effect (LE, $40.00) is cooler (90% similar). Chanel Sakura (87) (LE, $45.00) is brighter (90% similar). Has there been mostly positive or negative reviews of this product from other bloggers? I’ve only seen yours. I hope negative, and these get reformulated. So many great formulas on the market to compete with.
I don’t read a lot of blogger reviews myself, but consumer and reader reviews are all over the map, IMO! (Both negative and positive.) Some of the positive reviews I would say are conditional reviews – people who like that they’re sheer and/or don’t care about it wearing more than 6-8 hours (based on what I’ve read!).
I’m really wondering how these products made the launch like this. It’s too bad considering some KVD stuff is really great- smooth, pigmented, and long-lasting!
I agree! It’s so bizarre.
This product seems overwhelmingly appalling. Where was Quality Control??
I wish I knew!
Oh ,this is is so sad b/c the peachy colors are so brightening! I would love to pop this on my cheeks to light up my face and cheer me up on on Mondays
It’s a real shame!
I really hope that these blushes get reformulated. I had such high hopes and bought “Sid and Nancy” and was so disappointed 🙁 I have a blush obsession and I really wanted to love these. Sadly I had to return it.
So sad to hear you had a disappointing experience as well, Jessica! Glad you got your money back!
Ouch @ the rating! I’m surprised this turned out so badly but I can just imagine what it was like trying to work with it. The swatches look so sheer and chalky. I have no idea how these made it past production. I heard her original blush line was amazing. This just looks disappointing
You & me both, Fancie! The texture is just unlike all other Shade + Light products.
I guess the ONLY positive point for Samson & Delilah is that at least it didn’t take 8 coats to make it show up! These Shade & Light blushes are a serious disgrace to Kat’s brand. Hopefully, she is reading your blog and decides to overhaul these.
LOL!
Wow, this is even worse than the last.
Ha!
This is the color combo I liked the best. 🙁
🙁
I had ordered one but I didn’t like the color when it arrived because a lot of times how they describe a color is different from in person. In my mind poppy pink is a far different color than orange coral. 🙂 So I took it back to Sephora and thought I’d give the other colors a try but even though I’m fair, I couldn’t get them to show up and I really had to rub them to try to get color. Chalky too. I was so disappointed I bought lipstick instead. lol
Oh, how unfortunate, Evelyn 🙁
What lipstick did you get instead?!
It’s amazing how stuff just jumps in my bag at Sephora. lol I ended up buying Firebird from Urban Decay and a cute MakeuptoBreakup set that has a small pouch and Sephora’s lip stain in Always Red. I really like them both.
It’s so disappointing that these are so bad. There are only two people I trust for make reviews – you and Tarababyz on You Tube. You both gave these an F. Sephora is a destination for me, there isn’t one close, so I haven’t had the chance to search them myself, but you and Tara have NEVER steered me wrong. As much as I want these to be all that and a bag of chips, I have to pass until they get reformulated. That bums me out, because I have really liked Kat Von D products (except for the Studded Kiss lipsticks).
Reminds me a lot of the Studded Kiss lipsticks, which were mostly misses for me 🙁
That’s what I’ve been thinking, too. When she hits it right, she nails it, but when she misses, it’s gonna be really bad.
I really hope some of these colors get reformulated!
Me too, Chris!
These colors could have looked so pretty, what a pity.
