Kat Von D Everlasting Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.18 fl. oz.) is a vibrant, cobalt blue with lighter blue and medium blue sparkle. This was one of the most pigmented shades in the line-up on its own–it was semi-opaque and had a very strong, deep stain that made it appear more opaque than it actually was. The texture was thin, almost watery as it applied, but it spread evenly across the lips and distributed both color and sparkle well. It managed to make it through a solid eight hours intact (one meal, two drinks) and then started to fade more noticeably from the center of my lips after a second meal.
After 14 hours of wear, I went to brush my teeth, and I typically rinse out by putting my hands together and gather water that way, and this resulted in all of the color running down my face like I was a living canvas of watercolor. There was minimal transfer during the day, and I didn’t notice any transfer on my glasses, but when I pressed my lips against the back of my hand or a napkin, more color came away. It started to feel a bit drying after eight hours of wear. When I removed it, there was still a residual stain that persisted for another 24 hours despite some vigorous scrubbing/removal–the reason I kept trying to get it off was that it had stained unevenly a bluish purple that ran in a horizontal line across my lips and then in large patches.
The formula is supposed to have “24-hour wear” with a “liquid stain base” that “feels like nothing” on the lips that can be worn “on its own” or layered “as a veil” over another lip color. There’s a lot to like about the formula, and I think as far as the concept of “lip toppers” go, it offers the versatility of actually being easy enough to apply to wear on its own but still be useful layered over other products for a shimmering effect. The doe-foot applicator worked well with the formula, as it spread the color and sparkly bits across the lips quite evenly. The coverage ranged from shade to shade with most having medium, buildable coverage in a single layer, which was in line with the description. They dried down and were transfer-resistant (until eating/drinking/licking of lips) but still had a great shimmering effect that made them look wet, even when they dried. They were more comfortable to wear than I anticipated–lightweight and just a little drying.
One of the bigger downsides is that it’s not going to wear 24 hours. Just about every single shade (all but Thunderstruck) stained my lips intensely, which helped prolong the wear, but the product breaks down with water, just plain water, and of course, it is removable by a slew of removers, including oil which one might encounter during a meal. I found deeper shades stained well but removed unevenly and left behind stained lines and patches on my lips that did not dissipate for almost 24-hours post wear. I didn’t notice that the lip color did not take well to water initially, as I didn’t see any transfer on my glasses, but when I rinsed after I brushed my teeth (where I cup water in my hands, so less elegant than drinking from a glass), I had lip color running like crazy.
This led me to pay even more attention the next time I wore the formula, and sure enough, color lifted with just a sip of water and transferred onto things like paper (but not glassware) and the back of my hand. Some shades made it through meals better than others with the worst offenders lifting more noticeably from the center of the lips. The formula survives some eating and drinking, but the more you drink, the less it survives, and even careful eating/drinking yielded noticeably faded wear between eight and twelve hours of wear. I don’t think a brand would advocate 24-hour wear but expect you not to eat, drink, or even brush your teeth! I would consider it long-wearing in the grand scheme of things with solid six to ten hour wear depending on the shade. They do stain significantly less when layered over something like the brand’s Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks but can seep through more emollient lipstick formulas. I actually liked the formula quite a bit, but the 24-hour claim was specific.

Satellite
Kat Von D Satellite Everlasting Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.18 fl. oz.) is a bright, cyan blue with subtle, cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a strong, bluish stain base and finer pearl paired with a few, larger sparkles. It had a stronger sheen than an overt sparkling finish compared to Reverb. It applied fairly evenly across the lips, though there were bits and places that did not have as much coverage as others, but I do not think it was noticeable from a normal viewing distance. The staining looked more greenish after removal and persisted for another day, though it had lasted for nearly 10 hours before fading enough to start needing a reapplication.

The fact that you had trouble scrubbing it off is a big red flag for me. That said, these colors are awesome!
A lot of it comes off fine, but the stain that is left behind is very difficult to remove entirely.
Yikes…
I used micellar water to remove satellite and it came off really well with that. The first time I tried removing it I used grapeseed oil and that was a disaster. That said I really love satellite!! It’s such a beautiful color. Do you find that reverb looks like occ’s technopagan?
Having a claim like “24-hour wear” is such a risky move but somehow a lot of brands seem to do it but the sparkle and the shine and the color range is so good.
I think this product is worth it even though it can stain heavily. How about when you layer it over products, does it also stain your lips?
Hi Alex,
I’m not sure why 12-hour wear (which is still quite long!) isn’t sufficiently long for marketing purposes!
I mentioned above in the review: it if is layered over something more emollient, like a traditional lipstick, it can still seep through. If it’s over a more opaque, transfer-proof product like KVD’s Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks, it’s less of an issue.
I try to test things for 16-hour wear because that how long some of my days are and if I can still look decent at that point, it gets a pass. But this 24-hour wear claim is ridiculous unless you are using something that covers tattoos like Alcohol Activated makeup is not needed most of the time unless you’re going a weekend in body paint. lol
That said something that is more transfer resistant is a bonus in my books. The formula sound like the other lip toppers I’ve tried but longer wearing like Lime Crime’s Diamond Crushers. But these are actually more metallic looking!
Reverb is like a more blue version of OCC Technopagan, and as Much as I love Technopagan any transfer resistant version would make me very happy. 😉 I’m putting also Satellite on my IMATS list so I’m hoping there will be a good discount again this year.
Yeah, I think my expectation would be decent but not immaculate at 16 hours – like I could handle powdering at 12 hours, you know?
Wow, this is an interesting formula! I don’t need anything to wear 24 hrs a day, but I do sip water and tea constantly throughout the day, hmmmm. I do love the super OTT metallic/foiled effect, kind of like shiny Christmas ornaments, will try a color (the purple) and if it goes well, will grab some other colors
I didn’t notice my water turning blue or anything, so there was that, haha!
Christine, this comment made me laugh out loud! What a sight that would be!
?????
Lol…though blue kool-aid was one of my faves growin up…”oh yeah!”
I like the bold shades and rich metallic (as opposed to glittery) finish, but the first thing that occurs to me when I hear brands claim 24-hour wear is “When would I ever need to wear makeup for 24 hours, especially without touching up?” Short of a stint in a real-life James Bond film situation, I’m pretty certain I’m going to have the chance to nip away to powder my nose.
Yeah, it seems like very few people would really need to count on 24 hour wear!
I like the Kat Von D brand’s cruelty-free status, as well as its reputation for high-quality products, but there’s just no place in my life right now for blue lipstick, so I’ll be passing on this one.
It’s a pretty color, though.
Hopefully, one of the other shades appeals to you!
Maybe there *is* a shade that’ll work for me; I’m blessed with naturally full lips, so I can carry off metallics pretty well.
These look beautiful!
They are!
Just so you know; you have company here with the scooping up water with your hands post toothbrushing! I have done this for 90% of my life as the standard communal bathroom cup has always freaked my germophobe self the heck out.
Reverb looks AMAZING!!! Makes me wish cobalt blue was something that I could wear without it making my skintone look freaky. Might try it on in-store anyways. Just because.
Well, at least I’m not alone 😉
This review just goes to show you can’t depend on swatches alone! I’m not a blue lip person, but I thought the opacity of Satellite looked amazing in it’s swatch and even commented on it in the preview. Even though it’s outside my personal wheelhouse I’m bummed it didn’t rate higher for the blue lovers!
Yeah, they are touted as more buildable than straight-up opaque, so that’s part of it!
I looked at the Kat Von D site yesterday, and it looks like there were some other, more readily wearable shades in this formula, but Reverb seems to be the only shade still available:
https://www.katvondbeauty.com/lip/liquid-lipstick/everlasting-glimmer-veil/40004.html
I like both colors but would gravitate towards Reverb. If I was still clubbing, I’d be buying these. That being said, I’m not sure how often I’d wear them regularly.
Reverb is so cool!
Oh, to be a fly on the wall, when the blue ran down your face! I just cannot imagine you a mess! Water runs it, yet it stains significantly? Strange combo. This is one of those products I have def aged out of. Almost makes me wish I were younger. Never do that any more. Glad I’m playing the back nine. But, I’ve been in Santa Barbara, Charlottesville, (school) Munich, Barcelona….and lived. The world is unkind at best. No wonder we escape via makeup. Pray…or whatever you do…for change and tolerance, and for victims of injustice and terrorism everywhere.
I was genuinely surprised at just how badly it broke down in water!
These are an easy pass especially after your description of “living canvas of watercolor”. That cracked me up. Plus the stain lasting days is really not appealing, who needs 24 hour lipstick?
The staining isn’t necessarily the worst thing but the unevenness of the stain after removal is the bigger issue, IMO! Like if it just gave me fuchsia lips for 2 days, that might be pretty!
Guessing you had better luck with Razzle then as far as removal goes? That’s the only one left that I am interested in. Shockful is a bit like Ionized Iris by Mac it seems and a few bucks cheaper.
I meant, of course, the mac is cheaper 😉
The things you do in the name of Beauty Christine! Oh my – I think these lipsticks are more trouble than they are worth…..I wonder if the formula soaks into the enamal on your teeth…
I didn’t notice any color on my teeth!
Love the color of Reverb, don’t really understand the 24hr concept. Just make it like 12 hrs of great wear and a lot of people would be very happy if it lives up to that claim or even longer.
I agree, Aj! I feel like 12 hours would be pretty great to most!
Am I the only one who kind of wishes you had taken a post-rinse picture?
Sorry – was more worried about staining my countertops than anything else!
Did you plan to show us some of the other more workable colours over her matte liquid lips? I’m very curious to see how Thunderstruck looks as a topper. I hope you do!
You can check out Kat Von D’s own video – they showed some combos there!
I might grab one of these for the holidays! I love the look of foiled or glittery red lips around the holidays, so if the red one performs similarly, I’ll pick it up to put over my red liquid lipsticks. The 24-hour thing reminds me of the Too Faced blushes that came out that performed very nicely but scored poorly because of the 16-hour claim!
They are really fun to wear! 🙂
Reverb looks great on you but lipsticks that stain your lips weird colours are kind of a pain. I had a beautiful sliver amethyst lipstick from Calvin Klein years ago that stained my lips grey for a day after I wore it, so not the best!
Thanks, J! Yeah, they’re really cool, and the staining isn’t a problem per se – but the uneven staining can be a pain!!
I found that using Lancome Bi-Facil
Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover removes the pigment after lightly scrubbing most of it off. It was recommended to me by Sephora. Hope this helps.
