Kat Von D Morticia + Gomez Shade + Light Blush Duo

Kat Von D Morticia + Gomez Shade + Light Blush Duo ($25.00 for 0.317 oz.) contains a pinky-plum and a light pink, both with a matte finish. The lighter shade performs better than the dark shade (which is pretty terrible), and if you mix the two together, the more powdery light pink goes a long way to making the darker shade less frustrating to you use. The blush formula is supposed to “stay vibrant for a full 24 hours of wear” with “silky powders” that “blend effortlessly into skin for a flawless, buildable finish.” The marketing makes it unclear what level of pigmentation these should be on Sephora, but per the brand’s Instagram, they are β€œhighly pigmented.” Neither shade is highly pigmented nor do they wear any longer than most blushes (seven to eight hours) in my experience.

Morticia (Shade) is described as a “rich fig.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark pink-plum with subtle, neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It was sheer with a dry, chalky consistency; it’s like the powder comes off of the surface but clumps together without adhering to the skin well, which resulted in a very patchy, uneven application. It’s very subtle on me after three passes of product applied to the skin. It started to fade after eight hours of wear. MAC Fever (P, $24.00) is more pigmented, cooler (90% similar). MAC Hot Nights (LE, $24.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Neolita (P, $37.00) is warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Rendezvous (P, $10.00) is cooler (85% similar). NARS Goulue (LE, $30.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever #510 HD Blush (DC, $26.00) is warmer, glossier (85% similar). Colour Pop Cheerio (P, $8.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Becca Nightingale (P, $32.00) is darker, more pigmented, warmer (85% similar). Bobbi Brown Berry (DC, $30.00) is darker, more pigmented (90% similar). Smashbox Plum (LE, ) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Gomez (Light) is described as a “orchid petal.” It’s a muted, light pink with cool, lavender tones and a matte finish. It was semi-sheer and buildable to semi-opaque coverage after three to four layers. The texture was softer and smoother, which made it easier to work with. It was moderately blendable and didn’t look powdery on the skin, though it sheers out. The color wore well for seven and a half hours. When mixed with the darker shade, it at least makes it somewhat usable. Kat Von D Clyde (Light) (DC, ) is lighter (95% similar). Makeup Geek Promise Ring (P, $10.00) is lighter (95% similar). Jouer Tease Me (PiP, ) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever B202 (P, $23.00) is darker (90% similar). Hourglass Ethereal Glow (P, $40.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). NARS Threesome (LE, $30.00) is warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek First Love (DC, $9.99) is lighter (90% similar). Guerlain Carousel (LE, $65.00) is more shimmery, less pigmented (85% similar). NYX Pastel Chic (P, $6.50) is lighter (85% similar). NARS Mistinguette (LE, $30.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Kiss Off (DC, $26.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Surratt Beauty Guimauve (P, $32.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Physicians Formula Rosy Pink (P, $12.99) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever B200 (P, $23.00) is lighter (80% similar). Colour Pop Floating Lights (LE, $7.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Still so sad to see these aren’t working for you. But I agree, even the swatches look awful. So bizarre. If I get a chance, maybe over the weekend, I’ll have to swatch mine out. I don’t know, maybe they sent me the wrong thing (LOL)! I did notice though when I followed your Formula X link to Sephora, this shade duo is sold out again. I requested an in stock notice because, if a second one comes and it’s like the ones you received, I can always return it.

Wow, I think this is my favorite color combo! I like how you can get 3 very different colors in 1 kit, great for travel or touch ups. If she fixes the QC issues, it’s on my wishlist.

I know it’s silly to want something just for its name, but I wanted this one so bad! Who doesn’t love Morticia and Gomez? It breaks my hear that it’s just as bad as the others.

Oh my goodness these blushes are not doing well at all!! Such a shame, I was so excited for them! I did a makeup inventory yesterday, though, and it’s very clear I do not need any more blushes so thank you for saving me money!!

I have 28 single powder blushes, 4 palettes and 6 cream blushes. If I wanted to count the palettes into individuals it would push me up to 44 powder blushes. I don’t know where they all came from, I swear they just reproduce in the drawer! LOL

You don’t see too many matte blushes out there, and even less in duos, so I wonder if they are extra tricky to formulate? Like how matte shadows are harder to get right than shimmery ones? And since it’s a duo, the 2 shades have to share the same base, and we’ve seen some disasters with that (like the Hourglass modernist shadows, the Ulta dupes of them, and the Tom Ford Ombre Blushes). IDK, just trying to figure out where this went all wrong…

I don’t know that any will, unfortunately. If they had been stellar in every other aspect other than wear, the highest (possible) score would be around a B.

Ok, so it may score an F, but where you mixed both shades together and applied them to your face looks like a color I would love to have. Something about using them together just does it for me. So here is hoping (and perhaps praying?) that Kat reformulates these puppies and puts her renowned talent into making these into what they were MEANT to be!

I swatched these on my moisturized skin and they looked great…HOWEVER…I am about an N10 in MAC terms. I think fair skinned folks may like this one. Prep the skin well first.

Moisturizer would certainly amplify them, I would suspect! I know moisturizer can take a sheer product and make it opaque, since it is damp. Did you try blending over moisturized skin? I tried these, out of curiosity, over liquid foundation, powdered skin, liquid foundation + set with powder, and I still had issues blending. It was actually worse over damp product (liquid foundation) for me.

I feel so much better about this blush after reading your review. I tried three different brushes and still felt like it was just applying splotchy.

I agree! Oftentimes, I think it’s user error on my part when I struggle with a product unless I see you or someone else I know having the same issue. Hence me trying multiple brushes / multiple times. I need to return mine!

I’m so disappointed in these. I was really hoping they would be great because I have a paltry blush stash and this is like getting 2-3 blushes for the price of one.

I think I might give this a try!
The pigmentation and texture might be terrible, but as someone who LOVES BLUSH LIKE NO OTHER and has a hard time making most blush work (Tarte’s clay blush in Celebrated works as a very subtle contour shade on me, grr…), I think I can overlook the texture problems if it means that I don’t have to worry about accidentally applying too much! πŸ˜€
Plus, Morticia is a beautiful color. It’s literally the exact shade I’ve been looking for since forever. πŸ˜€
(I’m so excited!!! πŸ˜€ )

I realize it was stated in an IG post that these were supposed to be “pigmented”, but in other press releases it is stated that these were designed to be used with the Shade + Light Contour Palette. Going with the latter (I haven’t personally seen/read the former), it makes absolute sense these run on the sheer side. Layering a richly pigmented blush over contour shades would, at best, defeat the purpose of the other products; at worst, one would end up with a big, muddy mess. Another use these were specifically designed for is “color contouring”; with contour products, a whisper/hint of color is ideal, as anything too opaque/pigmented results in the stripe that looks unnatural. Using these in a more “traditional” manner won’t yield the results most people are looking for, which is fine-there are more than enough of those products on the market, already. As someone who enjoys the contoured, sculpted look, these look like great option.

I don’t know that it would make sense that they are sheer – at least that’s not my interpretation of it, but the Instagram post isn’t just a random one, it is by Kat Von D Beauty announcing/promoting the product. So that seems a little odd to me, IMO, to say “highly pigmented” and really mean sheer.

I bought this shade and was mad I bought it after seeing your swatches. However, I’m pleasantly surprised to find it works for me. I am as pale as the moon though. πŸ˜›

i’m starting to think they used a primer on the swatches they shared on snapchat over a week ago because they definitely didn’t look patchy or powdery .

so weird .

I think of all the reviews/comments from readers is that, at a minimum, they swatch pretty poorly, but some are having better luck with application, at least.

they look powdery and dry AF, how sad these didn’t worked for you. since the success she had with the shade & light palettes and the metal crush eyeshadows you’ll think these would’ve performed great too. i cringe everytime i see the F on the glossovers. i hope she revamps the formula.

This was the combo I was most interested in. An easy pass after reading the reviews and seeing the swatches. You do make them work on your cheeks though. Well done!
