Kat Von D L'Ecole des Femmes Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D L’Ecole des Femmes Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D L’Ecole des Femmes Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte bright coral pink.” It’s a pink-coral with warm undertones and an ultra matte finish. Marc Jacobs Beauty Wham (604) (P, $28.00) is pinker, less matte. Bite Beauty Crush (P, $28.00) is brighter, less matte. Marc Jacobs Beauty Shout (138) (LE, $30.00) is darker, pinker, less matte. Hourglass Muse (P, $28.00) is more orange. Make Up For Ever #37 (P, $19.00) is darker, pinker, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
This performed a lot better than Coven, luckily. The consistency was slightly creamier, so it didn’t tug or drag quite as much on the lips, but it doesn’t just glide over the lips smoothly. The color, however, did apply evenly overall. It took six and a half hours before the color started to have any visible signs of breaking down, and after eight hours of wear, there was slight fading along the center of the lips and some of the color had pulled into lip lines. This particular shade wasn’t tacky, so by pressing and rubbing lips together, I was able to ease most of the color back into place so that it was still wearable for another two hours. It wasn’t drying over time, and it doesn’t feel too clingy (it feels less clingy than you’d expect given the matte quality). If you have drier lips that have flakes/cracks, the formula can catch on them. It is more forgiving than I expected, though. In general, I think those that are really after long-wearing, ultra-matte lip color, it may still be a very interesting formula. For someone who doesn’t mind reapplication and prefers to have a really comfortable-to-wear formula on, this might not be the one.

I love that shade! Do you think applying it over lip balm would help with application for those of us with dry lips?
It should help somewhat, but it’s really more about having a smooth surface vs. initial hydration so having hydrated lips prior to applying would be more helpful!
This one is a really pretty shade.
It is a fun shade!
Agreed!
The finish/texture really makes this color sing since you’re not distracted by any shine. Looks amazing!
Glad ya liked it, Izzie!
If one just reapplies in two or three hours, does the formula bunch up?
It depends on how much product has gathered into lip lines – it is blendable/movable enough that you can reapply over it, but it will depend on how it wears on you.
The colour is exactly what I’ve been looking for, but even though I have normal lips (they aren’t dry or even), my experience with such colours hasn’t been good. Even Mac Amplified in Chatterbox dries them out. And I tried Revlon’s Mischievous Matte Balm which was the one you didn’t review, I love the colour but the formula is patchy and bunches up in lip lines too. It’s so unfortunate!
Aren’t dry or uneven*. I dunno, they feel normal too, lipstick glides on smoothly, and then something happens to it. This occurs with most pastel colours.
There’s something about the matte base + lighter color that seems to make them prone to settling over time, unfortunately 🙁
If I look closely, I can see it beginning to bunch on your lips too. Now i’m hoping Bite’s new crayons include a colour like this. Any less than an A grade, not good.
Are there applicators for us to try out lip colours in sephora?
I’m not sure what Sephora has out – I think they have some applicators but not sure how they deal with lipsticks.
I have a question idea for the blog: What do you do to stop your makeup from looking cakey?
It would be nice to hear other people’s opinions
*swoon* from all the colors, this is definitely ‘my’ color 🙂
Yay!
You haven’t bought this yet! 🙂
B is still a fairly good grade. I want this colour!
Let me know if you end up trying it, Rikki!
This shade is so pretty. I’m really loving this line as a whole, so many fun colors to choose from! Love seeing your swatches!
Thanks, Emilie!
Oh yay, I like this! I have to admit to being a bit concerned when I saw the performance on Coven, especially since I am waiting shipment of two picks from the collection. The finish really makes this one look unique IMO.
It’s also not SUPER bright, I think, which makes it more unique.
This color isn’t for me, but wow I love the finish. Definitely going to get a few. Thanks for your work! Is it stiffer/drier/more matte than MAC’s retro-matte formula?
Well, this was less stiff compared to old school Ruby Woo but stiffer than the more recently released Retro Mattes (which really weren’t so stiff).
Beautiful color! I’m not to sure about the matte formula though. The wear time sounds lovely but it may be a little much for my dry lips.
I’m not sold on it myself! I think if you really wanted that long wear capability or ultra matte finish, worth considering, but I’m not so sure otherwise.
This one looks a little too dry in end-appearance for me, but the colour really is very pretty! I have trouble keeping my lips totally smooth (especially with it being Winter here at the moment!), so this one would be a bit tricky for me 🙂
These ultra matte finishes can be tough on drier lips 🙁
Hey Christine, I love your site! I check it every day!
Maybe you or another wonderful reader can help me. I love this shade, but for some reason my colouring makes everything look even brighter than it is. So, for me, this lipstick would be positively NEON. Does anyone have any recs for a similar colour but just way less intense?
Thanks so much
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of matte corals that are permanent 🙁

Gorgeous! I’m waiting for this and Wonderchilde right now, should be here any day now.
These are actually the first Kat Von D products I’ve ever bought, and there are so many more I want. Next on my list are probably Lovecraft and Gothica. I even want Poe even though I know I’ll hardly ever wear it, its just so pretty!
Fingers crossed you love ’em all! 😀
I do! I wore L’Ecole Des Femmes a couple days ago for the whole day and was pleasantly surprised at how well it wore. I didn’t get the bunching up I was expecting and the constant feeling/urge/need to wipe it off I usually get when wearing matte shades (even though I love them) . It looked great and wore evenly, even through eating a bagel and drinking water all day, it faded..but evenly. I’m very happy with it!
Wonderchilde feels good on too, looks great, haven’t had a chance to wear it for more than a few minutes, soon hopefully. I’ll definitely be getting more of these.
So happy to hear you had better wear with it, Kelly! YAY!
this is SO pretty! no surprise that i love it considering i love both “wham” and “shout” from marc jacobs. can’t wait to check this out at sephora!
And if you wanted an even more matte finish… you’d love this!
This shade looks so beautiful on you! It came off far too orange-ish for me when I swatched it in store.
It’s definitely one of those shades that has pink in it, but it can run warmer/cooler depending on complexion, undertones, and what you’re wearing. Even just standing in one room vs. another can alter it quite a bit!
Aghhhhh, these last two reviews have me REALLY sad that they are phasing out the original Painted Love formula for this… that was one of my favorite lipstick lines and this sounds like something I would not be able to tollerate wearing, I can’t stand that stiff dry texture of long wear formulas like this… I’m boo hooing over here! lol… Might try to stock up in my two favorites before they are gone forever!
Awww! Hopefully one or two will work out – maybe just some shades won’t be so great.
Ahh, I’m such a sucker for corals!
You know I’m weak for coral, too!
Pretty! I think Kat Von D has a very good colour selection in this lipstick range collection. Very good indeed!
Looks lovely on you.
I love how many shades she has! I wish she had more finishes, though – like satins/pearls, not just metallic and matte.
Definitely will be getting this!
Enjoy, Shana!
I just swatched this today! I didn’t end up picking it up though cause I have too many colors similar to this. I was inside of a JCpenny Sephora and they only had four shades. Too bad I am leaving the US tomorrow so I won’t have time to check out a free standing Sephora. 🙁
Aww! 🙁 I hope you had a good time while you were here, though!
I did, thanks for asking! 🙂 All was not lost though, I did pick up some other goodies. 🙂
Lovely shade. It looks really, really good on you.
Thank you, Rachel!
What is your night/day routine for washing and moisturizing your face? Your skin is perfection !
Hi Iliana!
I use prescription products (Differin and clindamycin) which really help my face!
Is this anything like MACs Toying Around? This looks very similar on my screen.
Toying Around is a lot glossier, so I didn’t include it as the finish was so different and there were closer dupes (11 of them!) that were more matte. http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=169624&dupe=162877
DAMN IT! these are supposed to suck so that I DO NOT want any of them…..but it’s awesome.
How does it compare to Mac Ablaze?
Ablaze is darker! 🙂 http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=169624&dupe=106930
this shade is SO pretty! i love how the matte finish really complements the colour too.
on a side note, how do you possibly make every lipstick look good on you, Christine?
You are too sweet 😉 I definitely don’t look good in every shade, lol!
Gorgeous!!
Glad you liked it, Isabelle!
I didnt think I’d love this shade, but hot damn… It looks just beautiful!
Do you think you’ll give it to temptation on this shade, Marlene?
lmao this was a major let down for me, can believe it has a B, its an F for me!
That’s too bad!
