Kat Von D L.U.V. Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “matte rich violet.” It’s a lightly brightened, medium-dark magenta purple with warm, pink undertones and a matte finish. Too Faced Melted Violet (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter. Bite Beauty Grape (LE, $24.00) is lighter, pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Rollergirl (P, $18.00) is purpler. MAC RiRi Boy (LE, $16.00) is a touch lighter. MAC Seductive Intent (LE, $16.00) is less matte. MAC Up the Amp (P, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Heroine (P, $16.00) is slightly brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The Studded Kiss formula is supposed to have “10-hour wear, one-swipe payoff, and velvet touch comfort.” It had semi-opaque color coverage, but the consistency is slightly stiff, so it is difficult to get “one-swipe payoff” as it doesn’t glide across the lips in one go. It tugs, pulls, and drags somewhat, so you may be better off applying this with a lip brush. The coverage is fairly even, though it isn’t even in some places. It lasted for seven hours, though it was slightly drying towards the end. I was surprised that this shade was actually lacking pigmentation, as it is a deeper shade. The Studded Kiss formula has a creme brulee scent but no discernible taste.

Idk how i feel about this line. the colors look nice enough, but they seem to be dry looking, and not easy to apply. I know quite a few people are jumping on ordering a bunch but they don’t seem amazing. and im a lip junkie, so i know my formulas but these meh lol

Eh, I’ll take Heroine instead. This line seems to be pretty inconsistent. I said this before but I bought two of the mattes (Archangel and Underage Red) and they apply excellently. The metallics seem mostly nice, but the more sparkly ones seem to be trickier. Makes it frustrating to order online.

I have this color in the Everlasting Love Liquid Lipsticks and it’s much smoother and nicer there. Too bad this collection is so inconsistent!

DANG! I am so happy I waited for your reviews on these lipsticks before I bought any. In all honesty think it is unforgivable when a high end company releases something that is bad quality. I mean you can go to the drugstore and get something for a fraction of the price and it is better quality. Were these just not tested?! What the heck?

Yeah, soon as I saw it I thought, good thing for Heroine! Love the color, but one like this needs pigment! And Heroine is one of Mac’s better feeling mattes, so the verdict seems to be “Dupe it!”

I’m really hoping that you don’t give up on the Studded Kiss line before getting to Thin Lizzy (or at least that you do Thin Lizzy, and then give up on them immediately for the sake of your poor lips). For me, the production of the whole range was a gift just to have Thin Lizzy in a full size that will last me awhile–it had previously only been available as a mini in KvD’s LE 2013 holiday set. The color is SO beautiful.

The more I reaad your reviews of the Studded Kiss lipsticks, the more I’m conflicted about whether I’m actually putting up with an annoying formula on Thin Lizzy, but I just don’t care. As far as I know, there’s no dupe for it, and it was just this color that I was so arrested by (as a fair skinned redhead) when I saw it on a stranger in a salon that I had to embarrass myself to go up to her and grill her about what it was, and then search down the LE set months after it sold out and pay a crazy price to get six minis I’ll NEVER use just to get the one precious mini of this one color. And now I have multiple back-ups of the full size.

So there, that’s my ode to Thin Lizzy. Let the Gods of makeup forgive the rest of this apparently misbegotten line of Studded Kiss just for this one perfect color. And if you do end up reviewing it, and hating it, I will make an ode to you if you can suggest some dupes. 🙂

Hey Jessica,

If you love the color, then it’s probably worth the extra work. Should you get a better product for $21? Yes, absolutely, but if you have it, love it, enjoy it. 🙂 The way I look at the review process is more about *setting* expectations!

NARS Daphne seems to be one *everyone* hates, but as soon as I saw the color, I had to have it! All these years later, and I haven’t been able to dupe it… It takes alot of effort, but sooo worth it. Then again, if I love anything more than neutrals, it’s purple eyeshadow!

I’ve heard very good things about Gothikka, and the swatches I’ve seen look fantastic. I have a few colors (see my comments below). I find the pinker shades, and the non-mattes, are much less dry.

Ugh, this reminds me of that one Illumasqua shade you reviewed. It’s a shame the matte shades are such a miss. The line started out so strong with Poe!

*sniffle* 🙁

Honestly. KvD, if you’re going to get us all excited by making a lipstick that’s actually purple, could you please also make it, you know, good? From under my tinfoil hat, I kind of suspect that things like this discourage people and other companies from making/buying/trying purple lipsticks, because they seem so risky!

Revlon did a shade very similar to this many, many years ago, and it was on par with all the others in the line. I don’t know if it’s still around, but it was called “Sly Violet”… If a DS brand was able to pull it off some 20 years ago, I wonder why a “specialty” brand can’t pull it off!?!?

I have this, and I like it just fine. It is a striking color. I don’t find it dry, but it’s not creamy, either. I also thought it would be more pigmented. Still, the color is lovely and vibrant on me. None of the Kat von D studded lipsticks that I have last 10 hours, and I’ll believe that claim when I see it. I also find I need a 2-3 swipes, to get the color even.

I have Poe (driest and most finicky, but usable), Wonderchilde (iridescent; texture in between L.U.V. and Lullabye), Sexxer (iridescent & creamy) and Lullabye (pink-leaning magenta shimmer; fairly creamy) as well. The pinker shades are creamier than the bluer shades. So much of the quality with this line seems to be attached to the color and whether or not it’s matte.

Sorry to be long-winded, I hope that info helps some people thinking of getting those shades.

i started off wanting about 5-6 shades when you posted the promo images , but these reviews (with the exception of poe) have been so disappointing . 🙁

i think i’m going to hold out on getting poe because i just recently purchased occ’s technopagan & pagan lip tars .

so obsessed !
