Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick
Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep raspberry.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark raspberry pink with cool undertones and an extremely matte finish. The finish is what makes it harder to dupe. Bite Beauty Framboise (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, warmer. MAC No Faux Pas (LE, $16.00) is brighter, less matte. MAC Flat Out Fabulous (P, $16.00) is slightly less matte, a bit more magenta. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It’s intensely pigmented, and a little goes a long way, so I’d highly recommend applying less than you think. With the liquid lipstick formula, you will want to work quickly so it doesn’t dry as you apply, but it doesn’t dry down too fast. I think you should have enough time to apply the color evenly with full color coverage, though. The color goes on evenly without pulling into lip lines, and when it dries, the finish is ultra-matte and makes lips appear almost smoother than they really are. The formula doesn’t feel clingy while worn, but it doesn’t have any slip, so it stays in place and there’s little to no transfer (if you eat something oily, it will break down slightly, but how much depends on what you’re eating!). On me, the color lasts well for eight hours, including through a meal. It feels slightly drying after four hours of wear.

Bauhaus was a really important german movement that took stage around the 1920s and started the revolution of architecture, design and art in order to simplify and minimize stuff – just in case you didn´t know @ky 😀
So keeping this in mind, I think the colour is really a hit! Looks awesome on you, Christine!

Ginny Avatar

Boww-house, or Bah-house. It’s a play on Bauhaus, the German art movement. I think KVD used to date the musician Deadmau5 (dead-mouse) and the shade used to be called Mau5 (or something). Then she broke up with him and changed it to Bauhau5.

Karen Avatar

I’m old (very old, lol) but I think her reference to Bauhau5 is the British Goth band from the 70’s. I used to listen to them in high school. I still love Peter Murphy. The other members went on to form Love and Rockets in the 80’s. But the lipstick was originally named after Deadmau5 but they had a really bad breakup so she changed it to Bauhau5.

sophia Avatar

Yeah, I think the issue with this is that they LOOK really dry even if they don’t feel dry. I think I definitely fall into the semi-matte camp for prefered finishes, but yeah it comes down to preference.

kjh Avatar

you can try a good balm..like jack black underneath…just wait for it to ‘settle in,’ ’cause you don’t want to lose the matte. I got Outlaw once + wound up regifting it, bec. of shrink wrapped lips. (i’m old.) When small size Outlaw came around in a sephora set, i wanted to make it work, bec. the color is super. That app method worked…just WAAAAAIT + massage the balm in + your lips won’t feel dried down, but you’ll still get the finish.

Oh! I was sooo looking for this review when I bought this a few months ago. In the end, I took it back because, though it is a gorgeous color, it never really seemed to “set” on my lips. I didn’t really like the tacky feeling compared to the Hourglass liquid lippies which seem to dry down completely. Is it bad that I’m now considering repurchasing?? LOL!

Nicole Avatar

I like this! it looks great on you! Any idea on how it compares to Limecrime’s velvetine’s? It looks close to pink velvet which I ordered last week. I have a couple of the other velvetines. I haven’t been able to get a hold of the more “fall/winter ” shades until last week. So,Ive not worn them for long. This looks like a larger color selection. This type of formula seems to be gaining ground . I’m not sure how to feel about it. It looks really nice on young women. I’m 38. I love makeup and the artistry behind it. I am two years into a chronic neurolgical condition that came on two years ago tomorrow that completely changed my views on practically everything literally overnight. So, my question to everyone is: at 38..39 in Feb(ouch!)..is it absurd for a woman my age or older to wear a bright pink matte lip or what about OCC technopagen, or black???.I .just would like your opinions. I know there is a time and place for everything. Just wondering what you ladies and gents think when you happen to see it going on??Thanks for any comments! 🙂

Nicole Avatar

Christine, maybe I should edit that comment or delete and repost? TMI?I’m pretty confident in what I can pull off and feel confident in purple lips or chapstick. Maybe good for a daily opinion question..I’m not sure exactly what you call them. They are always fun and useful questions or surveys.
This looks amazing on you..I will certainly be checking these out. Good non LE..goes on my list!

Nicole Avatar

Girrrl..you are never slow. In top of your A game all the time! You deserve a life too..we all know that. I was just thinking post-posting, it was probably a kinda slide of the fingers at the moment,lol..oh well.we shall see what comes of it.:)

Christine Avatar

Sorry, I don’t use Lime Crime and haven’t since they originally released their lipsticks, so I’m not familiar with the Velvetines. Based on what they’re described as, I would think these are at least somewhat similar! 🙂

No such thing as absurd for your age so long as YOU love it and rock it!!!

Nicole Avatar

I just had seen them in the media a lot in the early fall and thought they were really pretty. Of course they were sold out everywhere ,except Amazon where you could get them for like 3-5 x the selling price..not my thing. They just happened to restock last week. So, I ordered a few..or 5 🙂 If I don’t like them, my sister’s teen nieces will paint my nails for them for years,lol..jk.( I will give them to them). Is Lime crime not a reputable organization in your opinion? I sense a bad taste for LC and am wondering if I should research more before or if I would buy anything more from them. Im not interested in their regular lipsticks. i think I read your reviews on them some time back..not too good.

xamyx Avatar

I’m 41, and I still wear “unconventional” shades, deep vamps, and pale nudes… I *personally* wouldn’t wear this shade, as it just doesn’t work with my overall aesthetic (which is a toned-down/grown-up goth, LOL!). That said, as long as you’re in an environment where this shade is appropriate, why not?

Nicole Avatar

Thank you for your comment ! I agree. I wear whatever is fitting and I like. I wear dark vampy lips to bright glossy lips,lol..depends on the day, my mood and if i want to just put on a gloss or a full lip pencil and dark lip. It seems like a lot of women tend to just stop doing their makeup or stop caring or don’t think they can wear certain things as they get a little older..idk. I say ,if it ,makes you feel good, if you feel like it enhances your beauty,go for it!

Rachel R. Avatar

I’m 45, and I wear bright pinks of all finishes, Technopagan, Kat von D Poe, all the Nyx Wicked lippies, black lipstick and whatever else I want. The key to pulling it off is attitude. Have fun! I bet you’ll be surprised at how great you look.

Nicole Avatar

Thank you Rachel R…I would never have placed you at 45 by your photo! I agree..it is about attitude. I live in a pretty conservative town.I do get some looks..I just smile. But, I tend to stare at women a lot and mostly it’s me checking out there look, lol! I try to compliment them or smile so they don’t think I am being a snob or mean or “checking them out” in a different way. Thank you for your response! I love reading the comments on here. I notice you comment a lot..very helpful to have other people who love beauty stuff to bounce ideas off of.

Rachel R. Avatar

I love reading the comments here, too. I’ve learned a lot. I probably comment too much (sorry, Christine!). lol

I have four brothers, two sons, two brother-in-laws, no female relatives nearby except my senile mother. My female in-laws are beyond uninterested in makeup, as are most of the women in Oregon. So this is where I indulge in girliness.

Rachel R. Avatar

I didn’t think you meant that at all. I’m so sorry. I know you meant it complimentary. I was being a bit self-deprecating. Hazards of the internet: Tone of voice doesn’t get through. You didn’t do anything wrong. My apologies.

Erin Solaro Avatar

I’m 10 years older than you and working up my courage to buy Technopagan or Colourpop’s Feminist because when I do, I ain’t gonna stop wearing them, at least in the winter. Heck, I’m even knitting a 2nd stranded colorwork sweater (think 100,000 stitches) for just those colors. I wear bright lips and eyes all the time. Bright matte pink yesterday. Looked fine, not absurd at all.

But then I live in Israel. I always thought I could never wear a bikini. Have one, quite conservative, but thought, What did I buy this for? Then my 65-year-old-40-at-heart friend and I went to the Dead Sea and we saw lots of very overweight, older Russian women totally, splendidly rocking much smaller bikinis. We looked at each other and said, We’re stupid. They’re smart! (*So many* Russian women have *so much style*. Regardless of height, weight or age. Not my style, but it’s a great frame of reference!)

Nicole Avatar

I have both of those Erin! I have not gotten up the courage to wear Technopagen yet.I can’t seem to figure out what to pair it with as far as eyes,cheeks,etc..ugh. It was so hard to find and then it popped up on Sephora one day. So,I just ordered it,lol. But, I love Feminist. Also, Colourpop’s grind is fabulous. it’s semi-matte purple..straight -on purple. Just get them, espescially the colourpop. So affordable and really nice for the price. Last so well! I would get the pencils with the lippie stix too. I own almost all of their lippies and close to the shadows! I just wanted other opinions. I do get looks. I tend to keep my look otherwise simple if I am doing a bold lip especially with an off-beat color. My daughter who is 9 asked me when I was wearing that matte purple (Grind by CP) lip why I was wearing purple lips?. I asked her, “what is the difference between purple, pink, red, or black ? They are all colors”..my face ,my option.I am a nurse. So, there I keep it minimal. Heck ,I have to be there at 7 am,so we are lucky if I slop on a balm!
As far as the bikini, I still wear bikinis. My friends do too. I do take pretty good care of my body. The best I can and work, and be a single parent with a chronic (very painful lately )illness. But, I say the day I stop showing that I am a woman is the day I give up being a woman..which I suppose is the day I no longer am. Thank you for your comment. I greatly appreciate your response. I am so happy that I found Temptalia.com when I did last summer after a major neurosurgery when I was laid up for several months. It really is nice to have other people who know beauty to chat with.Other people who are not into beauty things don’ seem to “get it”.

Nicole Avatar

Thanks Christine! I have been better honestly. I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia..it’s a rare thing. Came out of the blue in the middle of the night 2 years ago today! nonstop pain on the left side of my face that has flare ups with different things. I have had 2 surgeries with no success. I was doing good after the last one. But, to put it basic, something is compressing the nerve and it keeps moving somehow. I am seeing a specialist in Neurosurgery on Feb 3rd to see if he has any opinions. For now, it’s meds that sometime I wonder if they make me feel worse than the actual illness. Thank you for what you do. I am a true beauty addict..not ashamed to admit it because of your community here! Plus, you help me make wise choices and it helps me to focus on other stuff. So, when I am not working or doing things I have to do, I am checking out your blog a lot. I mat be addicted to it too, lol. Keep up the hard work! You are going to do big things..even bigger than what you have! 🙂

Erin Solaro Avatar

Nicole, I think I’m gonna have to spring for Technopagan this weekend, because. Blood test today because I may be facing my own neuro issue. I honor your strength and endurance and courage. (I imagine I’ll keep the rest of my face neutral for it.)

Thanks for the Colourpop recommendations: got several on my list. And maybe Bauhau5 and a few others from the line. Waiting on Fyrinnae to reopen.

I don’t know about this woman thing: for me, makeup is more a love for color. But then, I have a haircut that makes me look *far* more like Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now than he does now–which I like a lot. I suppose that says something.

Be well.

Nicole Avatar

Erin,
So, so sorry to hear that. Neuro diseases/disorders are so crazy and rare and a pain to deal with because of that. I have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgial. It affeccts the trigemnial nerve in the left side of my face..it is torture, literally. I hope whatever you have is diagnosed swiftly and correctly and brought under control. I went a year misdiagnosed and treated with the wrong medications and invasive treatments. So,trust your gut. I am a RN. I finally, did my own extensive research and laid it out in front of my Neurologist and told her I would be going to different doctors.
Just keep positive and strong. Makeup is makeup. It’s fun, pretty,,artistic,or maybe just covering my under eye circles,lol..whatever you want it to be,it’s all good!
Spring for the Technopagen! Neutral, I am sure would be best on the rest!
Take care Erin. If you want an ear to chat or any info, lmk. In the meantime, rock the technopagen!

Erin Solaro Avatar

So far, trying to contact you back channel, via the community and not having much luck finding you.

Thank you for your kind words. I am very, very sorry for the hell you’ve been through and I hope that things will improve for you!

Nicole Avatar

Erin, i have no idea what you said ,lol..”back channel” . I am totally un tech advanced! I need a trainer in that area or something:) . @ Christine. I would love for Erin or anyone that I have been in contact with thus far on her to be able to contact me in any way. How do I email you to give you that permission officially? This is really a great community of people..not just beauty junkies..it seems like we got each others back in other ways too!

Marlene Avatar

Nicole, I personally think that even though there definitely is a time and a place for everything, few times and places are to be considered ‘holy neutral ground’ as far as makeup goes 🙂 I understand that where you work is or might not be appropriate to wear beautiful bright lipstick but you have EVERYWHERE ELSE to rock those colours regardless of age. I mean, I’m 29 and I’ve been wearing makeup for only a year and a half because I was too afraid to leave my bedroom wearing anything but clear gloss for fear of what people would say, and honestly? I feel goddamn AMAZING with my purple, pink, red lipsticks and cat eyeliner in 4674336 shades of awesome. Do I look ridiculous wearing purple or dark red lips during the summer? Probably. Do I care? As if.
Bottom line, if you feel good wearing it, rock it. Even if it is to go to the supermarket or greet the mail person at your door. Then you’ll conquer the world, MWAHAHAHA.
And about matte formulas for people your age (hey, it’s not like you’re my 94 years old grandma 🙂 ) I don’t think you should worry beyond ‘will my lips handle it well or curl up and die’. Based on Christine’s review, I understand its less drying than MAC’s retro matte formula, and retro mattes are beautiful but deadly on my lips, so I can’t wait for these to arrive in my country…

Nicole Avatar

Thanks for you comment Marlene! I am glad a younger woman chimed in here with an opinion. I am tasteful with my looks. I am a nurse and wear “no make up” makeup to work..just because of the setting and it’s really early!lol. I tone it down and amp it up as I see fit. I have worn makeup since 12 years old. Always loved it.I should have went for a career in that directon . But,my parents were very strict and would only help me out with college if I chose a path where there would be a job, lol. So, lesson one, follow you heart. Lesson 2,Rock those bold colors or pretty neutrals. I love soft ,glowy skin, light eyes,no liner, with a bright lip..I did that today actually. Got lots of compliments! You have to do what suits you. i hate it when women whear the same exact makeup ,the same exact way every day! what fun is that? That like wearing the same clothes every day!I kinda feel bad for them and want to take them aside and show them all the things they can do with just the products they own.
As far as these KVD lippies, I just picked up 2 today. I didn’t get this one thogh. I had it #3 and it put me over my budget at checkout. i got Underage Red and L.U.V. today. This one and Berlin are coming up next. Idk if you get Anastasia there. but word is her liquid lipsticks are supposed to be really good. i ordered one from her website. I am going to order more when they come to Macy’s website or the store so they can be returned if I don’t like. I think Macy’s said by Mid Feb in store. So, they may be online now or any day.

I’m 46 (47 in two weeks!) and I really just started playing with makeup. I was a severe minimalist in my youth, though I’ve never rocked no-makeup. As my interests have evolved, my desire to play with my looks has as well, and so hear I am, wearing purple and blue lips, or deep, goth-y, film noir eyes. I know there are people who think I look ridiculous (…for my age), but this is who I am now. I was someone else 10 years ago, and someone completely different 10 years before that. What are my choices? Figure out how to work the drama into my face, or deny all my strong, harmless impulses to express myself the way it feels appropriate to do at this stage in my evolution. My subconscious interests don’t know that society assigned me a use-by date, and living that way just isn’t an option. I expect to be wearing something completely shocking(but hydrating!) on my lips when I’m 90 (unless, of course, I’ve evolved in another direction!)

tl;dr — wear what you like and don’t apologize!

Alecto Avatar

Wow. “*here* I am…” And that’s not the only mistake. Any possibility of eventually getting an edit function Christine, for those of us who type faster than we think (or vice versa)?

Nicole Avatar

Alecto,
Awesome reply!every person in the world should have that reply! No “to be used by date” here either, lol. I am going to have that in my head a lot now! Thank you for responding .

Danielle Avatar

So brighter than OCC’s Pretty Boy (my go-to “bright” pink because I am crazy picky bright pinks!) but the finish is pretty cool. I’d have to go swatch it and see it what I think then lol. Maybe I can find it at Marshalls/TJ Maxx! >:D Yes, they stock a little KVD there, at a fairly deep discount (ie, about $6 for an $18 Foiled Love lipstick).

Tania Avatar

I seriously trust your reviews but I had such a bad experience using this one! Now you made me doubt myself hehehe.
I loved the color when I saw it so I asked some family to buy it for me, I used it a couple times, it sucked but I just loooooove the color, it makes me smile I just bought MAC Flat Out Fabulous yesterday whitout knowing it was a dupe. Do I have “good eye” or what? (because I seriously don’t)
Anyway~ so yeah, I guess I’ll give it a try again.

Tania Avatar

I thought about it but I don’t have a Sephora near me, I don’t think the hassle of returning it would be worthy >.>

And it’s been quite the while but yes, I have tried liquid formulas before and I liked them, for me, my main problem was that it was very streaky when I applied it. And I don’t know if this is to be expected but after a few hours (including a meal) it was fleck-y instead of just disappear evenly .

About it being streaky maybe I applied to slowly, because it’s such a strong color I was trying to apply it carefully and maybe I took too long
Hey! do you use liquid formulas with lip-liner underneath or over it? Because maybe it’s as simple as that, just get a lip liner and don’t worry too much about it being perfect.

(and sorry about my English btw, I hope this makes sense)

Lilyanna Avatar

I think your glossover is incorrect in its calculation, you have the product at 8.5/10 when you’ve taken only .5 off from application and everything else is 10/10!

CornyMetoka Avatar

Funny how products look so different on people! On you, this looks like a bright raspberry pink colour. On me, Bauhau5 looks like a dark, cooltoned, raspberry/wine colour. The liquid lipstick formula does get dry on my lips though, and I wish I could find a creamy lipstick dupe. I just love the colour 🙂
