Liberator

Hourglass Liberator GIRL Lip Stylo ($32.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a brighter, medium-dark berry with reddish undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied beautifully to the lips with smooth, even coverage. The finish was luminous without being too glossy or emollient, so the wear time wasn’t compromised, but my lips looked smoother and plumper. This shade wore well for just over five hours and left a subtle stain behind. The formula felt hydrating to my lips.

The GIRL Lip Stylo formula is supposed to have “modern color with luxurious hydration for a lustrous finish,” while the brand founder is quoted (on Sephora) stating, “I can build as much–or as little–color as I like.” I would describe the coverage semi-opaque and buildable, which seemed to fit the brand’s description. The consistency was smooth, creamy, and lightweight, but the color still adhered well to the lips (three to five hours, depending on the shade). I definitely felt like I could apply a little here, a little there, and then spread the color out by pressing my lips together for sheerer coverage, or I could apply a single layer and get semi-opaque coverage fairly easily. The formula was incredibly comfortable to wear: lightweight, hydrating, and smoothing. Some balm-like formulas that have more coverage can sit in lip lines, but I felt like these filled them and made them look softer. I didn’t notice any scent or taste.

Warrior

Hourglass Warrior GIRL Lip Stylo ($32.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a dark burgundy with cool undertones and a soft sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation (but it did not seem buildable beyond that), and while it applied fairly well, there was room for improvement. I felt like the amount of evenness was impressive given its emollient consistency, lightly glossy finish, and less-than full coverage pigmentation. The lipstick had a moderately emollient, smooth texture that applied with ease across the lips and was comfortable to wear, as it felt quite lightweight and was moisturizing over time. The color lasted for five hours on me and left a stain behind.

I have been waiting patiently for your review of Liberator. It seems to be quite a few other bloggers’ favorite. I finally trotted down to Sephora and swatched it myself. Beautiful! But I decided on Protector, because I do not have a dupe for it in my collection. I find that Liberator is very similar to YSL oil- in- stick Smoking Plum ,which is lovely and mango scented, although not quite as opaque as Liberator. I also picked up Activist. The only prob with the new stylos, is that it is nearly impossible to pick out just one!
I probably will be investing in a couple more!

I bit the price bullet and purchased Liberator based on your sneak peek – and it is SO WORTH IT! I love the feel of this formula, and the color wears well for how comfortable it is. Just wanted to say thanks for the review/sneak peek as I probably would have skipped over this product based on the price alone.

I *love* Liberator, and even though I have dupes (Sheer Shame, Brocade) that I like a lot, I want it, because of the formula and performance! I also love Warrior, but have and love Jam, so I really should pass on it…

These Girl Lip Stylos are getting me in trouble here! I love BOTH of these shades. A lot! So yes, at $32 a pop, these are not exactly UD Vice or MAC price range. On the other hand, I absolutely love the smooth appearance these impart, plus the very POSITIVE, empowering messages that these names give. We truly NEED these messages now more than ever.

Hi Christine,
Thanks for the swatches and reviews. I was wondering how liberator would compare to Phyto-lip twist, berry shade, from Sisley? Thanks.
