Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) & Rose Glace (866) Rouge G Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) Rouge G Lipstick
This summer, Guerlain introduces new shades of Rouge G. Five shades are being added to the permanent range, and there are two limited edition shades–both featured in detail below–that come in specially-colored lacquered cases. They’ll be available at the retailers Guerlain is sold, and right now, only Saks seems to have the new shades available online. Rouge G is a long-time favorite for me, because of the long-wear, rich color payoff, and hydrating, comfortable formula.
Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) Rouge G Lipstick ($54.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “velvety red-pink.” It’s a vibrant, medium-dark fuchsia-pink with subtle cool undertones. At times, it almost looks warm-toned, but it is strongly pink-based, so it is definitely cooler overall. It had rich, intense color coverage, and the color wore well for six and a half hours and left behind a stain. YSL Rose Asarine (34) (P, $34.00) is warmer. Revlon Vivacious (120) (P, $8.99) is lighter. MAC Pleasure Bomb (LE, $16.00) is matte. Guerlain Provocative (863) (LE, $49.50) is warmer, redder. Urban Decay Catfight (P, $22.00) is warmer. MAC Impassioned (P, $16.00) is lighter, matte. Guerlain Gigi (P, $49.50) is very similar. Guerlain Champs-Elysees (P, $35.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Guerlain Rose Glace (866) Rouge G Lipstick ($54.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “nude, barely there pink.” It’s a light, milky pink with white and pale pink shimmer. It had semi-sheer color coverage that seemed to lighten the natural lip color and added quite a bit of shimmer. I think the formula of this shade felt more like the Rouge G Brilliant, between the glossiness, shimmer, and shine, but as the classic Rouge G, I think it misses on what makes Rouge G special–the long-wear, color coverage, and smooth texture. There was slight, noticeable texture from the shimmer, which I wasn’t in love with. The color wore well for three hours, which is longer than average when it comes to a shade as light as this (with this level of coverage). Guerlain Rose Innocent (LE, $49.50) has a stronger pink color. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

How does Grenat compare to Madame Batifole?
Hey C!
Madame Batifole is cooler-toned, darker, not as bright. You can actually pull up any two swatches I’ve done side-by-side to compare at the Swatch Gallery — http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=124748&dupe=162215
Thanks a lot, Christine 🙂
I love Rose Grenat! Nice pair of earrings, Christine. 🙂
Thank you!
AGH, so disappointed in Rose Glace. I was hoping for a tiny bit more pink, but even then I LOVE subtle nude shades like that. They’re some of the few that work on my cool-toned skin because they so often turn yellow or orange on me otherwise. I’ll have to keep it in mind if it ever pops on ebay on the cheap, but I have to agree that I couldn’t bring myself to throw $51 at it right now.
Rose Grenat is gorgeous, though! It actually reminds me a lot of Lipstick Queen Hot Rose, though that has a matte finish rather than a glossy one. 🙂
On a side note, is it just me or do the prices on the Rouge G just keep going up and up?! I was looking back through the archives and noticed several were originally listed at $46, and now these LE ones are $54 (I’m assuming because of the unique packaging). It’s still within a range that I’d consider acceptable for the quality of the Rouge G, but it seems like the price crept up awfully fast. o_0
They definitely go up, and unfortunately, they usually tick up by $2-3 every 1.5-2 years or so? I think. I believe they had already moved up to $49 a few months ago, now they’re $51.
I always wonder if companies have an end point to their pricing. I understand that luxury brands want to maintain exclusivity and that some brands enter the market with high pricing (like Tom Ford), but I wonder if there’s ever a point where they look at price and say ‘nah no one would pay that for a lipstick (or not enough consumers would to make the line viable)’.
Anyway the Rose Grenat shade is pretty gorgeous. I keep wanting to get a Guerlain lipstick and then end telling myself I should save for one of their perfumes.
Theoretically, I’m sure there is, but all brands keep raising for “inflation,” as all other costs have gone up (like food), so we’ll see.
I thought I was crazy for a moment because I’d gone the counter awhile back while they were still $49, so it took me by surprise when I saw the $50 price tag. Glad to know I wasn’t hallucinating. Still, UGH. Inflation is a cruel mistress. 😛
Cannot wait to get my hands on Rose Grenat. It is so stunningly beautiful and a perfect shade for Rouge G. Looks amazing on you, Christine. I think it’ll be great with NARS Lip Lacquer in Hot Wired over it.
Would be gorg like that!
Hi Christine, I have Gigi, girly and provocative. Do I need this? Although I don’t think those color look good in my medium tan complexion
Nooo, you don’t! Gigi is SOOO close! And if you don’t think they’re good on you, noooooo!
Rose Grenat is such a stunner and I really like the limited packaging… so want this like NOW.
I’m actually surprised at how well Rose glace looks on you. I figured this one would completely wash you out, but it seems for such a light shade, it has the right amount of natural lip showing through. Still, I agree, it is not what one would expect from this line of lipsticks in terms of coverage and longevity. But I don’t dislike it and I thought I would.
I think if they had put it under the Brilliant umbrella, it would be like, “Okay, cool, more what I expected,” because it’s quite shimmery, glossy, and has less color coverage (all true things about the Brilliants!). I was surprised that it actually DID look like more than a lil’ bit of shimmer. I was like, “Oh, this actually does do something,” LOL!
I don’t care much for Rose Glace, but Rose Grenat is gorgeous!!!
Rose Grenat is the star!
I really like the shade of rose glacé, but it’s a lot to pay for an average product!
I agree! I think the right go-to sheer color with an excellent formula that you’d wear all the time is totally “worth it,” but for me, a color like Rose Glace – there are so many other Rouge Gs I’d pay for first. That being said, because I LOVE Rouge Gs and basically seek to own all, I would have bought it anyway.
OMG OMG OMG /throws money at screen
TAKE MY MONEY GUERLAIN
LOL! Right? I’m there with you.
Rose glace was the biggest disapointment! When you first showed the launch I was uber excited, but it let me down. There needs to be more pastels on the market
It would be a nice contrast to the brighter shades in the range!
Rose Grenat is pretty! I’m not sure if I like the colored lacquered casing though. I quite like the original metallic packaging.
I personally prefer the original – I think if they made the whole thing colored, rather than just the cap, I would have liked it more. I love their black lacquered cases…
Rose Grenat is sooo pretty and bright, great for Spring!
Agreed!
Talk about extremes! I love the first; the second…inexcusable at that price point! So glad to see these reviews before buying!!!
Right? They can’t all be winners, unfortunately!
As much as I love Rose Grenat, I don’t think I’m ready to spend over $50 on it since I already own UD Catfight. The comparison swatches/dupes feature is really a great resource, it saves me money all the time!:p
I think you can definitely skip 🙂
So glad the features are helpful!
OMG, that first one is sublime! <3 It's simply lovely on you! 🙂
Thanks, Shipra!
I’m in love with rose glacé’s packaging !!!
Also between the 2 colors, i prefer the rose glacé, cause for the color of grenat, i prefer turn to YSL’s vernis à lèvre, they are much more hydrating, long wear, and glossy.
Waiting to see the Diors new liquid lippies, they look like quite close to YSLs.
How about the hydratation of Rose Glacé ?
Xoxo
Rose Glace was moderately hydrating 🙂
Waw, so a total hit and a total miss eh? I have to say that Rose Grenat is goooorgeous!
Yep! Crazy!
Rose Grenat is really pretty!
It is!
Both of them look good on you, Christine, but I would opt for Rose Grenat 🙂
Thanks, Anna! That would be my pick, too 😉
Oooohhhhhhh la la
u know how I must be feeling 🙂
U made the color more desirable dear … stunning as always
Thanks, Rashmi! xo
The Rose Glace looks beautiful on you, but every time I buy a lip color that makes my lips lighter, I end up hating it. I don’t want to gamble on this one with the price being over $50
I would stay away for sure then!
Rose grenat is just ludicrously, ridiculously gorgeous, so leaving that aside for the moment… ;-D
On the one hand, I really like that Rose Glace is a white coloured lipstick that isn’t chalky and opaque on the lips – if I had infinite money (hah!) I would totally get it just for the lovely packaging and the novelty of being able to wear a lipstick that colour in the tube.
On the other hand (since, sadly, the spell for infinite money still eludes me!) I feel like a thin layer of any sheer/clear pale gloss I own would give a similar effect 😛
They are both just beautifully packaged, though!
Rose Glace was surprisingly wearable, and it was also more visible than I anticipated!
Rose Glace’s packaging is so pretty! And I’d totally buy a <$12 dupe of the color. But as a highly premium priced product, it's a bit disappointing.
I was surprised not to have like… 40 dupes of it, because it SEEMS dupable. I’m sure there are (just nothing I’ve tried), but yeah.
Rose Grenat looks like it was MADE for you Christine!! So stunning!!
Aw, thanks Sarah!
OMG, I love Grenat!
It is gorgeous!
Wow, Rose Grenat looks so pretty on you! I feel like it’s cool enough to not make teeth seem yellow (an issue for my coffee and red wine loving self) but still not too cool. And the texture looks so perfect.
Too bad 49$ is just not feasible for me, especially in Canada where with tax that would be at least 60$ 🙁
Very true, Jess! (I’m a coffee lover myself!)
First is STUNNING. I’ll definitely pass on the second.
I love the first one the most, too!
It looks damn good and you look superb! Certainly looks warmer on you!
Thanks, Eesha!
THIS DOES NOT HELP MY CAUSE, GUERLAIN 😛 I’ve had my eye on Girly and Champs-Elysees for quite a while, but I haven’t pulled the trigger because I’m not sure which to go for (and Girly seems to be unavailable in Australia, so I can’t even compare them in person!). Now I have Rose Grenat to consider, which seems to be warmer toned than Girly and Champs-Elysees.
Also, how does Rose Grenat compare to Maybelline Vivid Rose, as to me they look very similar?
Definitely warmer than Champs-Elysees. Maybe slightly warmer than Girly (surprisingly close to Girly, given it’s permanent, at least here!). I would say Vivid Rose is definitely similar. I want to say maybe a little cooler-toned.
Thanks Christine!! I actually swatched Champs-Elysees at the counter the other day, and I can see now that it’s way too cool toned. As I can’t try Girly out for myself, I’m thinking I will just have to try Rose Grenat when it arrives in Australia! 🙂
Sounds like a good plan 😀
Rose is a pretty shade but I would have liked it a little toned to subtle rosy hue.. though i loved its color coded packaging!! 🙂
I wish the whole thing was colored, though 🙁
WOW – Rose Grenat is so lovely!
It is a showstopper!
Is Rose Grenat too similar to Provacative? Do I need both?
I don’t think you need both.
