Guerlain #42, 43, 45 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors (2018) Reviews, Photos, Swatches

#42
Guerlain #42 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium orange-red with warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied fluidly across the lips with smooth, even coverage. The consistency was lightweight, thin without being clingy, and adhered well to my lips for solid, six-hour wear. The formula was moisturizing while worn.

Formula Overview
$36.00/0.12 oz. - $300.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "intense colour" with a hydrating base that includes things like jojoba and mango butter as well as hyaluronic acid (and gugul resin) to "help to smooth and plum up lips." I would describe the formula as somewhere between semi-opaque and opaque, often buildable, with a luminous sheen that seems like there's very, very fine pearl but less distinctive shimmer (except for the shades that are actually shimmery).
I find that the magic of the formula is in its finish--it's shiny, luminous, and absolutely smoothing on the lips without compromising wear (four to six hours, sometimes longer). The formula is very hydrating and comfortable to wear. They have a sweet, floral scent but no discernible taste to me. The updated shade range seems to have a stronger emphasis on mid-tones in coral and red and less beiges than before.
The Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors have been updated but mostly with respect to packaging and the shade range, as the formula itself has not been changed (per the brand). The lipsticks are now available as refills for $32.00 each, and then one can pick from an assortment of cases ($15.00 each), though each refill comes with a small, plastic cap that keeps the refill from drying out while waiting to be sold. The refill cap seems like it would be sufficient to keep the lipstick long-term, but I can't say from experience. I have not tested each shade for wear, but the shades I have tested, initial swatches and applications, and the like make the formula seem the same as before.
The old Rouge G cases do not fit on the new refills as the case doesn't stay on without a magnet (it just slides right off). I don't yet have any of the cases as they weren't available to me to purchase yet, but I plan to pick one or two up merely to see how they feel (probably the Original, to see if there was any weight change, and then something new).
A big upside to the refillable packaging is that they're actually significantly less expensive buying them piecemeal than buying it all-in-one. The original Rouge Gs were last sold at $58.00 for 0.12 oz., and now, the all-in-one price is effectively $47.00 for 0.12 oz. -- that's a nearly a 19% reduction in price.

Guerlain #43 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium, coral-orange with warm undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, but I noticed that there was more visible color in my lip lines (particularly the horizontal ones), which were likely easier to see due to the sheerer coverage. The texture was smooth, creamy without being heavy or thick, and comfortable to wear over the five hours it lasted for. It felt hydrating while I wore it.

That TF dupe, Contempt would be good for #45. Yeah, I love the shade, but not #45. Orange does seem fitting.
Oh well, I do have Lady Danger. Close enough if I add a gloss on top.
All are beautiful shades, but I prefer my reds to be a bit cooler against my skintone. I’m on the edge of my seat to see the rest of the reviews! Lol
Love wearable orange tones I already own 43 and 45 is on its way…so nice to be able to get a rouge g for under $50 ☺️
These are all beautiful shades but I like my reds cool toned and don’t wear orange at all. I just ordered #65 that you reviewed yesterday or the day before. I am loving the lower cost with the ability to trade out the shades. The case options are really beautiful and I am waiting for the “white marble” case comes back in stock.
Gorgeous, beautiful shades and I am really loving these corals.
I have and love shade 45 along with 214. And my new ones do fit in the old casing. The magnet catches the new lipstick and holds it, I even shook it and it didn’t move. I tried both ways, new lipstick/old case and old lipstick/new case. They all fit with the only difference being no magnet in the new case. So strange that yours fell out.
The base of the lipstick will go in, but there’s nothing to keep the case on so it just falls off.
That’s so strange, I don’t have that issue with mine. I have three of the new shades and they all went in with the magnet catching it. So weird!!
There was no magnetic pull or feel at all for me – sorry! I tried with four different shades and caps.
That happened to me to, it is not secure held in the old cases.
I didn’t have that problem with the original cases myself!
Very odd…I’ve had the same experience as Lisa C: the new lippies fit securely in the old cases, the old lippies are at home in the new cases. Clearly Guerlain has had some manufacturing variations along the way!
I just spent 10 minutes trying to find any instance of an old Rouge G case fitting on a new Rouge G refill, and I couldn’t find any – the old case physically fits over and slides over the tube, but it doesn’t stay – if I put the lipstick in a bag and gently wiggled, the case came off, and if I turned it upside down, it fell off immediately.
Here are the old cases I tried: Gina, Greta, glamorous Cherry (newer), Gems, Galiane, Bianca (Rouge G Brilliant), Gigi, Gillian, and Gracia. I tried fitting the old cases over the following new shades: #22, #28. The new case I have (the white marble) does fit over the older Rouge Gs, but all my old cases are loose.
I only tried three so far, and they’re not the ones you tried: Grenade, Betsy, and 867 (that special edition one with the snowflake case). I put the new numbers 22, 25, and 62 in them just to see if they fit and they do–and the cases stay on. Obviously there’s no magnet, but they stay. I’d be comfortable putting them in my bag. As you said, the old shades fit fine in the new cases (which makes me so happy). Anyway, I have many more Rouge Gs so I’ll experiment more this weekend!
That’s really good to know, thanks for this info! I have 4 of these old casings and don’t want to throw them away. So ready for a color refresh tho!
I don’t know how you manage to look great in all lipstick colors, which makes me want them all but I am not so lucky, they don’t all work for me no matter how much I like them. So far I’ve liked every single Guerlain color you’ve shown us.
