- Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: MAC Paint Pots, Marc Jacobs Cafe Collection (cheek trios/eyeliners).
- Weekend plans: The usual! Blogging, photographing, adding in dupes. Not that my life was particularly full of non-blogging activities pre-pandemic, but it’s even more routine now, LOL!
- If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: We have really large, chunky stone around pillars on the exterior, which I do not like, and I’d love a thinner stacked stone or wood slats.

Here’s Mellan in his formal wear! I got him a black satin bow tie to commemorate when hubby and I got married! I didn’t have Mellan IN my wedding or anything like that, since that just wasn’t a thing I needed (personally) nor wanted to handle, haha. I always thought dogs in clothes was super cute, but over time, I really fell in love with the way a bow tie looked on Mellan–plus, infinitely more comfortable on him. He ALWAYS got so many compliments on his wardrobe of bow ties!
This photo set is one of my favorites. I’ve had it as my desktop background for a few years now 🙂
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: Innisfree order: Green Tea serum, Green Tea Balancing toner, Green Tea Intensive Hydrating Soft Balm
Weekend plans: Maybe venture out in search of food & water. I’m in San Antonio and was luckier than most in the area with some access to power & water, but we’re running low on water & shelf-stable food now. (That first Monday early morning was so stressful.) I’m from PA so extreme cold weather isn’t new to me, but I just keep grieving for everyone experiencing something like this for the first time, especially people with small children, are pregnant, the elderly, and disabled 💔
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: Oh what an interesting question! We’re living out of a hotel right now. I guess having outdoor patio access would be nice lol
I’ve always said Mellan in his bow ties were some of my favorite photos of him! So dapper. So handsome.
Hope things will get better for you and the other people in Texas soon!
Hi Ana Maria! Thank you, and I do also. Again I cannot stress enough how lucky we’ve been. The coldest for us was that first Monday morning—woke up to the rental house at 44°. People have experienced so much worse 💔
Our hearts are with Texas, we hope everyone gets some relief and fast!
Hi Brenda! Me too!
I’m glad you’re OK. I hope you can get what you need.
Hi Rachel! We were able to get a little water and some food. San Antonio generally hasn’t been hit has hard as Austin or other areas. We’re very grateful.
I’m so jealous of your Innisfree order. I love all their green tea products!!!
Hi Cat! Yes I really like their Green Tea line. I actually wanted the Intensive Hydrating toner and face cream but had to go for other available options. They’re having a sale right now so some products are out of stock!
Oh my Joyce – with two little ones and a third on the way and you are living in a hotel! That must be so, so difficult for all of you – especially when the weather is freezing.
I hope your situation improves fairly quickly for your sanity!
Hi Genevieve! It’s been quite something. It wouldn’t be so scary if I didn’t have kids or wasn’t pregnant. So much constant worrying. But again, we’ve been luckier than most so I try not to complain too much. It’s already getting better for me; I sincerely hope it does for others also.
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: I haven’t worn makeup in weeks, so today I reacquainted myself with the Huda Beauty Mercury Retrograde palette and attempted to create something to improve my mood. I’m still not sure how I feel about this palette; I got it for 40% off I think on Cyber Monday? And I’ve only used it a few times and…I’m a little underwhelmed by it. I’m glad it was 40% off, because if I paid full price for it I’d feel terrible.
Weekend plans: I think my husband wants to file taxes. So probably that. We live exciting fast-paced lives.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: New stucco. I live in New Mexico where nearly every home is stucco’d and mine is just terrible. Cracked, faded, gross. If someone gave me twenty grand and told me to go to town, I’d get new stucco. Other than that, I love my little house and I wouldn’t change anything else about it.
Thanks for reminding me of taxes. 😅 I already added the papers from my workplace, banks and brokerage, I just need to review everything and sent it. Gotta love tax season.
Recent Purchases: A few Devinah Cosmetics singles: Mystic Moonpie, Moonlit, Lynx and Aquila; Purito Cica Repairing BB Cream, Physician’s Formula Butter Blush in Sassy Mauve, and waiting anxiously on my Clionadh shadows to come in!
Rediscoveries: Nothing I can think of!
Weekend plans: Hopefully getting outside with my toddler to splash around in some slush!
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: ADD A FINISHED BASEMENT. The storage would be fantastic plus my husband could use the space for gaming and his weekly D&D evenings (once everyone is allowed to gather again).
What a handsome boy he was.
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: No new purchases, although my wish list is growing. I have rediscovered the neutral mattes in Modern Renaissance that never seemed worth the bother. I am applying them with a brush dampened with Ben Nye LiquiSet, which keeps the powder from traveling to my upper lid (on account of the hood) and then topping with one of the glitters from the Jackie Aina palette, all inspired by the Auric esthetic.
Weekend plans: I have been staying inside the last few days on account of the snow so I need to catch up on errands. I also need to organize financial records in preparation for tax time.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: We sold our apartment two years ago because it was needing work and I did not want to deal a renovation. We are renting now and it suits our needs very well. If I could make changes (I am asking for two), I would install better lighting and I would replace the stove. The one in our apartment is a fancy European model with an oven that is impossible to set to an accurate temperature.
What a handsome boy. I’m sorry for your loss, Christine. We suddenly lost our dog this week and it hurts like a son of a gun. It’s great that you have so many beautiful photos of Mellan to look back on. ❤️
Krb, I’m so sorry for your loss. Pets are such dear members of our families with their unconditional love.
Ah, Mellan 🙂
I’m finding it extremely easy to low buy these days. I’ve been reaching into the second and third layer of palettes stacked in my palette drawer, plus pulling products (especially highlighters) forward that have slid to my “lesser used” back of drawer.
My weaknesses are highlighters still (liquid, cream, stick, powder you name it) so I fight the good fight when one catches my eye.
My Before COVID (BC) life eye palettes and lippies were my weakness too. I’ve purchased one eye palette last year and probably four lipsticks plus some balms in that same time.
Weekend: My dogs are all consuming, in a good way. During the week I have them all day but take them out individually because 1) they are big dogs and 2) my rescue boy has some pretty extreme challenges, which I have to manage with my full attention. The puppy is his opposite. 🙂
The weekends are the best when my husband is home and we can head out at dawn to the beach, take a long walk and hopefully have some off leash time. The “kids’ love it, they get so excited.
Change, that’s easy, only one thing, my kitchen.
When we moved just BC we totally renovated, except the kitchen. It wasn’t my taste but the former owner had just renovated it a couple years before, so it was nicely done and seemed wasteful to redo it. It doesn’t match the rest of the house, which is clean and white with a beach thematic; the kitchen is beige and brown with an antique feel. It’s wonderfully functional, but I really dislike the look.
I can totally understand why you want your kitchen changed Dva – beige and brown don’t do it for me either. But I can also understand why you left it too. The rest of your house sounds beautiful.
I hope you can get your doggies out for a walk and the weather has eased a bit where you live.
Oh! I love this photo shoot 💝. He looks so handsome! I think this might be one of my favorite shoots of him too.
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: I just ordered the Pat McGrath foundation in LM13. Took me a long time to finish my Shiseido one, and I’m excited to try out Pat’s formula.
Weekend plans: catch up on work, and I have also been working on starting a youtube channel. I’ve been working here and there on research and drafting outlines. It’ll be about one of my passions that is not makeup 😉
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: change my standing desk from a level type to an electronically operated type, or get a better ergonomic chair.
I should invest also in better desk and chair setup, but I still hope I can return back to the office soon. I hate working from home.
It shouldn’t be too much longer! I bought the Autonomous AI
ErgoChair 2, but the cushion on the button is a bit stiff. Though they’re a bit weird looking and overpriced, I do wish I had gone with a Herman Miller Aeron chair. Very expensive though, and it was too hard to buy something like that without really thoroughly testing it in person in a store.
Surviving the Texas snowpocalypse. I am giving a zoom talk later today, so I may bust out the makeup–anything to cover the fact that I haven’t showered or washed my hair all week!
Best wishes Astra – that snowapocalyse must have surreal in a state that rarely gets any snow at all.
Sir Mellan looks so dapper and dashing in his formal attire!
Purchases/rediscoveries: No purchases, except for a few things for my daughter’s soon expected baby boy, Elijah.
I don’t think I rediscovered anything this past week, either.
Weekend Plans: Nothing beyond my usual; Zoom meeting tomorrow. Doing my hair today. Maybe run to Walmart for more catfood. Penelope (Salty Girl) has a huge appetite!
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do? Different location entirely! I’d rather be either back over on the Eastside of the Valley, or better yet, NJ! No matter where, I’d love to have a larger living room. And ZERO carpet.
Nancy, If I could rip out all of our carpet right now I would! We had an estimate to replace the carpet with hardwood and it was 10 – 20 thousand! That’s why we still have carpet. We are now thinking of doing some of it in tile that looks like hardwood. So many projects but meanwhile the fence is falling over so it has to be done first.
Have the night time temps in your apartment become lower so you can sleep better Nancy? 18 deg C or lower is the ideal temp for sleep and yours is way too high. I hope you are able to remedy this.
Going back to NJ has always been on your wishlist, hasn’t it. But your adult children are here and with your daughter giving birth (soon?), it’s tricky.
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: Am LOVING the Kevyn A. Balm foundation….and I suspect it is being discontinued (why!). I also really love Burberry fragrance….so far I am winding my way through a bazillion samples, but every time I find a Burberry one, I just love it.
Weekend plans: Report writing for work. Cooking while dear hubby plows elenventy- hundred inches of snow. Keeping the animals comfortable and healthy (when the weather is going cold/snowy to warm rainy within 24 hours, they can get pneumonia very easily)
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: Low maintenance garden. That’s the project this year. A wonderful, fully producing garden that takes about 1.5 hour maintenance per week tops.
Find of the week: Transformation App by Heidi and Chris Powell (of the Biggest Loser fame).
I never watched Biggest Loser, but being recently diagnosed with a hormone-related insulin resistant condition (weight gain is easy & the loss is painful) I did a search and Carb-cycling was the ticket; the search led to the app.
This app is genius; simple, really well thought out, includes appropriate exercises. Made by busy professionals for busy professionals and home-makers. Highly recommend (and yes, for me it has been working, which is a miracle).
Also: Loving the dapper Mellon pics. Makes me think about trying bow-ties for our Henry, a handsome Black Lab/Golden cross.
Recent Purchases; MAC had a 20-30% off deal for complexion products (and rakuten had 10% cashback for Presidents Day), so I stocked on the Studio Fix Powder Foundation (I use it as setting powder) and the ProLongwear Waterproof Foundation. Also, one of my blushes from my custom made palette expires soon, so I got a blush refill in Ambering Rose.
Weekend plans: The usual for me as well! Maybe squeeze in more rest, since I have a week of both early morning and late night meetings. Hope it doesn’t rain too much today, so I can go hiking without getting too much mud on me. Since winter is ending, I might declutter some cold weather clothing and donate what is in good shape.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: I live in a rental, there’s few things I can do or want to invest in. I absolutely love the location, wouldn’t see myself moving soon, but I would wish more modern appliances. Otherwise, I am a minimalist when it comes to furniture and decorations, as I am with makeup; the less I have, the better I feel. 😅
New purchases – just some O’Keefe’s hand and foot creams! I wanted to get Lancome Lash Idole but they were sold out! GRRRR! Re-discoveries: Bare Minerals Ready shadows, especially the Designer Label quad and specifically Elitist, which I’m wearing today with the 2 lighter shades in the quad – the matte one all over from lash to brow to make for a smooth application and the more shimmery one on my inner 1/2 of my mobile lids.
Weekend plans: gyms are reopening here (only 10 patrons at a time, no matter the square footage of the facility) but personal training is “exempt” so I’m gym training tomorrow for the first time in ages (as opposed to Face Time training with my earlier trainer). As stores are reopening, I do want to go to Winners to get a few mundanely practical things I didn’t get before Xmas (I bought them for others but not for me) but I might wait til mid-week, when there might not be lines to get in.
What I’d change about my house – firstly, a main floor 2 piece bathroom. Our house is over 100 years old and we renovated some time back but couldn’t find a practical and “not off-putting” place to put one (it would either be right off the kitchen or right off the dining room). The other thing is a double garage. The homes here probably all had them when they were built but most have been torn down as they were probably too small to accommodate cars of today.
Now that’s interesting – I bought the bareMinerals The Wild Thing quad because I loved the blue shade Contraversy (which I still do). In the quad was Elitist, and my word, what a stunning neutral brown shade it is. I do pair it with some of my bareMinerals Olive shades – like Eureka. The Designer Label quad, which I just looked up, would be a winner for you.
Having a downstairs 2 piece bathroom would be a plus for your house. We have, what we call in Aus., a powder room (toilet and big sink cabinet) and it is so handy.
When we were buying the house (about 20 years ago now), it had a big garage, with an internal entry. The garage is my husband’s man cave now (can only fit one car in it), but internal entry is fabulous for unloading your shopping on a wet day.
Newly built homes around here have all those features – nowadays, it’s triple attached garages – everything is getting bigger and bigger – and main floor 2 pieces (here, they used to be called powder rooms too but I think that term has been replaced) etc. but I love our home – in an old neighbourhood – and with the original floors with black walnut inlay and I love our area, which is totally “walkable”. Years ago, before we did the addition (the one into which we couldn’t figure out a 2 piece for the main floor), we looked at new homes in the suburbs and they were nice but they left me cold. Except for apartment rentals, I don’t think I’ve ever lived in a new house.
I meant to add – I really miss those Bare Minerals eyeshadows – the duos, quads and palettes. I’ve 2 of the palettes, 3 of the duos and one quad. The quality of them is so good and the colours – oh, my! I don’t understand why Bare Minerals got rid of them all rather than continuing to expand the line.
Magnificent, Dashing!! I can’t stop staring at it. Such a beautiful boy. I remember your wedding makeup was so beautiful, artistic and stunning. My hubby and I ran home right before the dinner, after photos at our wedding and took pictures with our two boys, we love those photos and I wish I had put them in bow ties.
I greatly appreciate the Blogging, Your site has influenced at least 90 percent of my makeup and a good number of my other beauty purchases for such a long time. Especially when gift giving and I want it to be just right. My Nieces are now hooked on your reviews, swatches and content for that reason. Always Grateful.
Thank you so much, Elle! 🙂 Appreciate you spreading the word to your nieces!
Mellan was so cute and dapper in a bow tie! I was doing some cleaning the other day and I found the little bow tie that I bought for my late cat Topher. He was a very chill boy and didn’t mind wearing it, so I would put it on him sometimes if guests were coming over.
Purchases/rediscoveries: Nooooooothing.
Weekend plans: Look at another rental house or two and possibly make a decision and put in an application on one. More cleaning and packing. Go pick up a cocktail kit. I think we’re also going to do a virtual happy hour with my in-laws. I’m gonna teach my mom-in-law how to make an Old Fashioned because it’s her favorite cocktail and it’s soooo easy to make.
What would I change about my home? The fact that we’re getting kicked out of it, LOL! But we are in fact using this as an opportunity to try to find a place that doesn’t have some of the pet peeves we have with this place. We might not get something all-around BETTER due to market conditions, but at least we’ll get something with new, different problems.
If I was staying here, the thing I would change is that there is a SUMP PUMP underneath my bedroom, and whenever we get a lot of rain or melting snow, it runs loudly. Usually it is intermittent, but when things are really wet it will run for 36+ hours at a time. Very loudly. Right under my bed. I have to move into the guest bedroom when that happens, it’s so annoying!
My spouse would completely redo the kitchen. The cabinets are really weird laid out and impractical. There is an exhaust hood over the stove but it is not connected to anything so it just draws the smoke/steam/smells higher up into the air. There’s no pantry! The appliances are all cheap. The whole room feels like it was designed by someone who has never cooked in their life.
I wish you the very, very best in your house hunting and hope that there are a number of places you would find suitable and that the weather deters everyone else away, so you get the first pick. My son and daughter in law are still looking and hoping, with crossed fingers, that they get any of the places they have put in an application for.
They have to be out by April as well, and it is not easy.
Thank you Genevieve! We just applied for a place today, hopefully it will work out! It is, unfortunately, smaller and more expensive than what we have now, but it is close to a lot of our favorite restaurants and our favorite bookstore, and closer to Daisy’s vet (we have to go there at least every 4 weeks for her injection, so this is really convenient). It also seems like it will be a lot easier to keep warm in the winter, and the yard will be easier to maintain. AND it has a brand-new, nice looking washer and dryer, which I am very excited about because our last two homes have had old, run-down laundry appliances.
I really hope your son and daughter in law have some success with their applications! <3
Oh Mellan tugs at my heart strings, my neighbor just got a little yellow lab girl and she is so precious, she unties my shoes and pulls my mittens off and I would love to steal her away but they live across the street from me so that wouldn’t work too well lol!
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: No purchases, I can’t believe I haven’t bought a thing except groceries! I wonder how long I can keep this up?
Weekend plans: I have a migraine so I don’t have anything planned and the weather is going to be nice so that might mean a migraine all weekend.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: We have so many things on our list of what we are going to do but just one thing I would like to do would be to change the two upstairs bedrooms into a walk in closet for myself then everything would be in one place.
Mellon looks so adorable in his bow ties – what a handsome chap he was.
Recent Purchases: Seeing as CP had brought back some of their Lux lipstick lines and was having a sale, I purchased three of them, 21 Questions, Lay Over and Y2K – needless to say my favs (Foolish and Tea Thyme) were already sold out.
Rediscoveries: I used my City Color singles of Cleo and Sandstorm this week – they are still so good.
Weekend Plans: Our 5 day lockdown has ended – yay and we are back to our new normal (face masks and restricted seating in restaurants), but that is really good compared with other places in the world at the moment.
Friday – we had baby Harry and Lachlan over during the day, as Anika was doing house inspections and it was far too hot to be dragging the kids around. Harry is starting to eat solids, so we had him in the high chair and he absolutely adored the pureed vegies and stewed apples that I had made for him. He kind of sucks it through his little fingers and doesn’t really make too much of a mess.
Saturday – definitely a cleaning day – I have used up just about every single tea towel in the place, and some shopping.
Sunday – probably going out for lunch. My eldest son is also looking at a house to buy, but he is aiming for a new place.
Change an aspect of your house: When our grandchildren have grown up, we would like to replace the carpet (it was beige when we bought it and it is not quite beige now!) in many places with either tiles or wooden floorboards. I would also like our ensuite bathroom to be redone too. And while I’m at it – replace a few curtains.
I have reading, with a degree of horror, over the extreme cold that you have been suffering from during the week throughout the States and Canada. Having no power for heating and cooking would be horrendous for everyone and I hope that your power is restored and the weather warming up occurs soon for you all.
💕Mellan 💕
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries:
No Crack Super Hand Cream (Duluth Trading Company) 😉
Weekend plans:
Recover from busy days at work. Cook, clean, grocery
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?
Remodel my kitchen (in planning stages), roof/shelter for my outside cats
What a gorgeous doggo. My friend trains all her cats to wear bowties. There’s no way I could get mind to wear them 🤣
No haul as I haven’t been buying much. I think the last thing I bought were some Sigma brushes and they’re great. Never tried the brand before but I was looking for some MAC 239 dupes. I’m eyeing the new MAC paint pots for sure!
Last summer I completely gutted and renovated my kitchen. It was very old with a non-sensical layout and not enough cabinets. Luckily of all things the room wasn’t small, so now it’s absolutely amazing and I spend so much more time in there. I even have a little island to eat at. I think my next project would be, boring as it sounds, replacing the rest of my windows. They are old, drafty, and during storms they rattle terribly.
New windows are gold! We love ours!
Recent purchases: Huda Nude Obsessions Medium and Dark (Sephora sale page).
Weekend plans: Just chilling at home. We got our second COVID shots yesterday. So far, not much in the way of side effects.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: Enlarge the bedrooms. Our house was built in the late 60s, so the bedrooms and closets are on the small side.
Love him in bow ties!!! Not all dogs pull it off as well!
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: I’ve just been playing around with some singles from my collection this week. Tried to use some Coloured Raine, Sydney Grace, Terra Moons, Give Me Glow and JD Glow I hadn’t used before.
Weekend plans: We don’t have running water and… yeah, I don’t have any plans.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: Maybe this counts as more than one thing, but I would get rid of the Jack and Jill bathroom and just have each bedroom have its own bathroom.
Hoping you have running water soon. Stay safe!
Simply WOW, seeing Mellan! Usually had to get into your plans to catch his pic, but to all of a sudden have him appear seemingly out of nowhere . . . just WOW! Exceedingly handsome in his bow ties, he is.😊
I live on South Padre Island in coastal Texas, so have gone through one of the worst weeks in my life, but then I think of how I’m so much better off than most of the people in the world, and things slowly sink into place. But gosh, there was not even ONE HALF PINT of milk to be had on the whole island today!
Happy weekend; I hope you enjoy your brief Texas stay. It’s warmer already!
Hope your grocery stores are full again soon… thoughts with all of you down there!
Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: From Sephora: YSL x Zoe Kravitz London Sky and Midnight LA lipsticks, Marc Jacobs Enamored Sugar High gloss, and Sephora #Lipstories Scorpio lipstick. I also signed up with the Marc Jacobs Beauty official site and got 15% off my first order: Le Marc Oh Miley! lipstick (in the green tube-the Very Merry Cherry collection is 30% off) and Hey You! and Allow Me Enamored glosses. I know no one outside my immediate household will see any of my lip products for a while, but I still feel better putting them on, even if they never leave the house!
Weekend plans: Worked today, errands tomorrow. Not sure about Sunday.
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?: My mom has decided that we must get a second bathroom put in this spring.
Such a handsome boy, that Mellan. 🤩
Recent purchases:
MAC Paint Pots Ultraviolet, Moss Definitely, Bougie and It’s Fabstract
MAC lipsticks (sale) Heart Goes Boom, Out With A Bang and Cannes Do!
Chanel Eclát Du Desert Illuminating Powder (backup)
Tom Ford Nude Dip quad (backup)
Makeup Remover cloths (Amazon) – love these, they are 5×5 and come in a 10 pack.
Osea Ocean Cleanser – I received the deluxe sample size in a beauty box subscription and love this. One pump us enough for the whole face and I massage it in and let it sit for a bit before I wipe off with a wet towel.
Rediscoveries:
Tom Ford Nude Dip, Cocoa Mirage
MAC Aladdin Collection Princess Incognito, Rajah lipsticks, the palette and blush (bronzer?) and highlight
Weekend plans: Other than sleeping in, at-home workout(s), going for walks and Sunday Spa Day, not a single thing!
If you could change one thing about your home/space, what would you do?
Sonething simple – I was just talking about this the other day. I’d make my backyard a birdfeeder palooza! My binoculars just came in and I’d like to start putting up birdfeeding stands/stations and a few baths. The options for that and feed are overwheming so I’ll have to be careful.
Something more complex – I would also like to put in a (big) pond so I could take care of a huge colony of ducks and Canadian geese that make their home in one of the ponds by the park. I buy feed for them and stop by on my way home. It’s turned into a routine and I’m always happy to see them gathered in their spots when I round the corner. They seem to know my car and it’s been very gratifying, having them impatiently scurry over and squawk at me for their lunch/dinner/snacks.
How stately Mellan looked in a black bow tie!
Recent purchases/Rediscoveries: Purchased Les Chaines de Chanel Illuminating Powder. Rediscovered Tom Ford Soleil d’Ambre eye and cheek palette, Chanel Tissue d’Automne eyeshadow quad and Chanel Penombre eyeshadow top coat.
Weekend Plans: Laundry, tidying up, and watching hockey. Made fish and chips for dinner on Friday night and pasta with meatballs and spicy garlic bread last night – some of our favourite homemade meals.
One change to house: We purchased a house last Fall and it desperately needs the interior painted by a professional. I’m planning to engage an interior designer to help us with colour choices as well as decorating our livingroom.
Thinking of everyone in Texas and elsewhere who have been dealing with extreme weather, electricity outages, water loss, property damage, and food scarcity.
