Too Faced A La Mode Eyeshadow Palette
Too Faced A La Mode Eyeshadow Palette

Too Faced A La Mode Eyeshadow Palette ($36.00 for 0.39 oz.) includes nine eyeshadows–three of which are larger, six are smaller in size. Too Faced also likes to separate their shades into Day, Classic, and Fashion, and there’s an included booklet that shares how to use each as a look, but don’t feel confined to how they’re ordered! The palette is a great value, as you’re getting the equivalent of almost eight full-sized eyeshadows (considering the average eyeshadow is 0.05 oz.), though the lighter shades are significantly larger, and you may or may not use them accordingly. I love that the palette is well under the $50 price point, and you’re still getting nine shades to play with. In general, this palette is rather shimmery, so if you tend to incorporate more satin/matte finishes into your looks, you may find this impractical to use as a standalone palette and would need to add in your favorite mattes. It is also a very warm-toned palette, which may or may not be a happy thing.

As an aside, one of the things about Too Faced’s eyeshadow palette is they rarely repeat names, but shades can definitely overlap from palette to palette. I’d really like to see some of those very, very similar shades just share names.

St. Tropez is a pale, warm-toned beige with golden sparkle over a satin finish. This shade is the least shimmery–applied–in the palette, as all of the sparkle sits on top of the actual eyeshadow, so it doesn’t translate on the lid. If you want the sparkle to stay, you’ll need to apply over a tacky base (cream eyeshadow, adhesive base, etc.). There’s so little that actually seems to make it to the eye that I really didn’t notice fall out during wear–you know, there was just… little to fall out. Divergent Serene Vanilla (LE) is more matte. bareMinerals Celebrate (LE) is more shimmery. Makeup Geek New Year’s Eve (P, $6.99) is slightly lighter. MAC Shroom (P, $15.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cannes is a brightened, medium-dark copper with warm, orange undertones and a frosted finish and copper sparkle. This had a slightly grittier, more sparkly texture so it wasn’t as smooth as other eyeshadows. It had slight fall out during wear but most of it occured during the initial application. It had fairly good color payoff, though, and I didn’t have any creasing after eight hours of wear. Makeup Geek Vegas Lights (P, $6.99) is darker. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #9 (P, $9.99) is darker, less sparkly. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #4 (P) is more metallic. Guerlain Cuivre Ora (LE, $35.00) is darker. MAC Double Feature #8 #1 (LE, $15.00) is less sparkly. MAC Copper Sparkle (P, $21.00) is brighter. bareMinerals Bragging Rights (LE) is more muted. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Soleil is a medium-dark, red-toned brown with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had intense pigmentation, and the texture was soft, buttery, and smooth. It wore well for eight hours without creasing/fading. Fyrinnae Peppermint Vodka (P, $6.80) is very similar. Makeup Geek Burlesque (P, $5.99) is darker, less frosted. Guerlain Les Fauves #1 (LE) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Riviera is a light, golden beige with warm undertones and a frosted, almost metallic, finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was very and finely-milled. It showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. Tarina Tarantino Jasper (P) is similar. Cle de Peau #119 (LE, $45.00) is darker. Kat Von D Galore (LE) is similar. Disney by Sephora Scuttle (LE) is more muted. NARS All About Eve #1 (P, $24.00) is slightly darker. MAC Femme-Fi (LE, $15.00) is less metallic. Benefit Bikini-tini (P, $10.00) is a cream product. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Jardin is a pinky-coral with a lot of gold shimmer and a frosted finish. It had fairly good pigmentation, and the texture was soft and just a little bit powdery. The color wore well for eight hours before starting to fade. MAC Artistic License (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Clinique Pink and Plenty (P, $17.00) is a cream product. Urban Decay Scratch (P, $18.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Cote d’Azur is a medium-dark, warm-toned brown with a metallic sheen. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and smooth. This shade didn’t start to show signs of fading until after eight hours. Sleek MakeUP Python (P, $9.99) is a smidgen less warm-toned. Too Faced Amaretto (P, $16.00) is similar. Clarins The Essentials #9 (LE) is warmer. Makeup Geek Blitz (P, $6.99) is slightly warmer. MAC Her Cocoa #4 (LE, $15.00) is darker. CoverGirl Scorching Cocoa (355) (P, $4.99) is more muted. Milani Intermix (P, $6.99) is similar. Benefit Dandy Brandy (P, $18.00) is a touch darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

La Croisette is a brightened, white gold with a metallic finish. It had nice pigmentation, and the texture was soft and fairly smooth. It did well for wear, lasting eight hours before I saw it start to fade. theBalm Envious Erin (P, $16.00) is similar. Urban Decay Zephyr (LE, $18.00) is less metallic. MAC Solar White (LE, $15.00) is more golden. Dior Garden Pastels #2 (LE) is cooler-toned. Too Faced Snowflakes (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Vanilla (P, $21.00) is warmer. MAC Nylon (P, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Monaco is a brightened, cool-toned, fuchsia pink with a pearly finish. It had excellent color payoff, and the texture was blendable, soft, and buttery to the touch. It wore well for nine hours before starting to fade slightly–this did stain a little bit but was gone after a few hours. Sugarpill Smitten (LE, $12.00) is very similar. Too Faced Bright Eyes (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Too Faced Totally Fetch (LE, $16.00) is similar. Fyrinnae Superstar (P, $6.80) is brighter. Urban Decay Woodstock (P, $18.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

De La Mer is a cool-toned, blackened navy blue with soft, navy blue shimmer. It had decent to good color payoff, but the texture was as smidgen dry, so it is a shade that needs to be built up for best intensity. It wore well, though, and didn’t start to fade until the eighth hour of wear. NARS Ubangi (P, $25.00) is a cream product. MAC Bleuluxe #4 (P) is less sparkly. Clinique Massively Midnight (P, $17.00) is a cream product, brighter. Le Metier de Beaute Sapphire (LE, $30.00) is brighter, more shimmery. MAC Shop & Drop (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery. MAC Thru the Night (DC, $21.00) is lighter. MAC Blue Storm (LE, $21.00) is brighter. MAC Lunar (LE, $19.50) is similar. bareMinerals Shaken Not Stirred (P) is a smidgen darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I’ve been having a hard time getting Cannes to work for me. Mine is pretty gritty and it doesn’t like to apply evenly. You mentioned you noticed grittiness but mine seems over the top in terms of grittiness and fallout. Maybe that color is a dud in my palette. One of my favorite colors is Jardin but making it work with my skin tone (fair/cool) is hard! I really love this palette though!

I’ve been reading reviews and get the sense that Cannes chalkiness might be a deal breaker. Do you feel the same? Can/should this shadow be used with Mac fix + for better payoff?

Christine Avatar

I don’t find that Fix+ does anything more than water would, but I prefer water as I find Fix+ can sometimes ruin the texture of an eyeshadow – a damp brush or a creamy base should help.

One bad shade wouldn’t be a deal-breaker on a $36 for 9 eyeshadows kind of palette for me personally!

I understand the frustration of the same shades not sharing the same shadow name (tongue twister!), but I also feel that it would kill the appeal for some of their palettes. For example, if they used the name “Cream Colored Ponies” from their A few of my favorite things palette in their Chocolate Bar palette instead of renaming it to “White Chocolate” (if it even is the same shade, this is just an example) then they lose some of the appeal of the uniqueness of the Chocolate Bar palette along the way.

That being said, the last thing you want to do is realize you’ve got 15 shades of the exact same shadow just with different names on them, especially when they’re from the same brand.

Yikes… what the hell was my point anyway? I think Too Faced cares a little less about their individual products and would rather sell products as a packaged “cute” whole. If that makes sense. It might be gimmicky, but it certainly works on a majority of the public (and I’m including myself!).

I bought this at ulta last week. I have never been so happy with a palette purchase! Cannes and jardin are my fave shades. These two with any touch of soleil or Monaco make seriously smoldering eyes. I’m still trying to figure out how I’ll use de la mer as blue shadows are always hard for me to not look clownish in. I was literally stocking temptalia for this review! I’m so glad you liked it as well! Summer palettes are so fun!! Thank u Christine!

Marieke Avatar

I just can’t get myself to like the lay-out of Too Faced palettes! The three big ones and six little ones are just not appealing to me. The theme and colors are great though.

Fran Avatar

I have this palette and love it, it is totally fun for spring/summer looks and it’s such a surprise how well the warm- and cool-toned colors work together. I find I can use St. Tropez as a base shade, the glitter is totally non-obnoxious, but both Riviera and La Croisette are definitely highlighter shades for me, at least in daytime looks. My favorite look with it is Jardin on the inner lid, Monaco on the outer lid, St. Tropez as a base in the crease and above, Cote D’Azur in the crease and extended in a cat-eye shape and along my lower lash line, Riviera near the tear duct, and de la Mer worked into the base of the outer 1/3 of my lashes. I love the look you did with it, Christine!

I am REALLY interested in this palette! I think it would be awesome for travel since it contains some neutrals and also bright pops of color. Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon and post a review on my YouTube channel! I will definitely post a link to this post in the description so others can see some more swatches. Thanks so much for your time and effort on each and every post!

Ulta has it as well. I purchased mine on Monday 3/24 in store.

Sephora won’t have it in stores for possibly two weeks, and maybe one more week for online, I was told on Monday.

Carrie Avatar

I thought this seemed warm, but yours are the first pics I’ve seen that really show how warm this palette is.

It’s a pity, because it’s so pretty, but I could never pull it off.

Wwendalynne Avatar

I very much like the right hand side of the palette; a very pretty assortment, but I would be purchasing this palette for just those 6 shades. The three bigger pan shadows are too similar to dozens of shadows I already have as basics or in other palettes. I think this would be a handy travel palette.

mari Avatar

I love all the colours minus 3 and I wish I could make a custom palette *_* because then it would be ab fab. More beauty shops need to pull the freedom palette inglot system <3

Chanel Avatar

i really like this palette but the fact that i’m dark skinned (NW48) i don’t see any use for the eye shadows on the left side which makes me really sad

Jennifer Avatar

I’m such a sucker for Too Faced shadows! I bought this a week ago and I love it. I don’t have many warm toned shadows and the only one I have a dupe for is Monaco. I love the look you created, it’s gorgeous!!

Vi Avatar

The only Too Faced’s palette I have is the matte eye and now this. xD I wasn’t interested in last year’s summer palette but was very drawn to this one. So far, I quite enjoy this impulse buy >_>. The glittery overlay of St. Tropez scared me but was pleasantly surprised.

Vi Avatar

Yes, I was happy that it was an overlay and not a big deal. Really like it so far. I might actually go for the boudoir palette because bit looks down my alley but I’ll wait…for now. xD

Hermia Avatar

I’m so glad they put that hot pink and blue shade in this palette! I liked those 2 shades in the pretty rebel palette but I didn’t get that because I don’t really like golden eyeshadows. Yeah definitely gonna get this one!

Sarah S. Avatar

This is gorgeous! I live in a world of bright and/or cool-toned eyeshadows (that’s what usually catches my eye) so this would be perfect to have as a part of my little stash!

Sarah Avatar

I love this palette however, I don’t have much luck with Too Faced eyeshadows, but the coral shade is so nice. I problaby would just get a dupe for it though.

Natalie Avatar

It’s almost always the looks that you create that win me over. I love Riveria and Jardin! I just purchased the Sleek Sunset palette though, so I guess I’m set for the summer.

Amanda Avatar

My first thought was, ooh la la what a pretty palette! But I think I have too many dupes to make this palette a worthy purchase for me, and your list seems to confirm that. Too bad, because it’s a nice set!

Dea Avatar

This looks like a really nice palette but I’m apprehensive because there seems to be some overlaps with last years pallet or am I imagining things? It is hard to tell for sure based on the pics and seeing that I can’t swatch in the stores as we don’t have Too Faced here (so I’ll have to get it online). I’d be very interested in your input before I buy. Jardin looks like Coral Crush, Soliei looks like Cocoa Beach, Cote de Azure looks like Chocolate sun, Riviera looks like Peach fuzz. What do you think?

Toni Avatar

I’ve been looking for a Copper shade for a while now as I love how it brings out Green eyes. I’m on the verge of ordering this palette and this would be my first Too Faced palette ( I know, where have I been?). I’m a newbie here Christine. This is a great blog. Thank you.
