Dose of Colors The Girls Desi x Katy Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

The Girls

Dose of Colors The Girls Desi x Katy Eyeshadow Palette ($28.00 for 0.24 oz.) contains four sparkling, metallic powder eyeshadows housed in a slim compact with a shimmering fabric exterior. Noli is the only shade that did not say it needed to be applied with a finger for best color payoff; Suz and Harpoon need to be used with a dampened finger. I’m not personally a fan of using my fingertips for application, since I find there’s no precision based on my fingertip to lid size ratio, so I did try using brushes to see how that went in addition to testing with fingertips (and the latter is the only application method reflected in the ratings) for the three shades listed for use with fingers.

They were fairly pigmented and long-wearing, but some shades weren’t quite as blendable as I would have liked, and there was a slight learning curve to get the right amount of dampness to make Suz and Harpoon work smoothly on the lid. I appreciate that the brand noted how each shade should be used, and more importantly, they included that information with the product, though the card is easily lost! The label on the back of the physical palette, though, is backwards (well, compared to how most labels for palettes are printed) as Suz is on the left and Noli is on the right, but when you read the label, it shows Noli on the left and Suz is on the right.

Suz

Suz is a bright, light gold with warm, yellow undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. This was a shade that stated it needed to be used wet, so the swatch reflects dry and wet application so one can see the difference. The texture was looser, and it really did have to be used damp in order to help bind the powder together and get it to apply to the skin. I had hoped it was more usable dry, as it did not blend out effortlessly along the edges (it was more like all or nothing). I had more luck blending other products into it and layering over it than trying to pull and diffuse this shade into other products. It wore well for eight hours without creasing and had minor fallout.

Noli

Noli is a rich, medium-dark bronze with warm, copper undertones and a golden sheen. It was intensely pigmented dry and damp, and it definitely worked beautifully with a brush or fingertips (this was one that did not mention fingertips as a preferred method for application). The texture was really smooth and blendable, and it sat well on the lid. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Turbosan

Turbosan is a deep plum with warmer, brown undertones and a slightly cooler overtone paired with a sparkling, metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation both dry and damp, but the dampened application was more opaque and deeper overall. This shade was listed as best used with fingertips but did not need to be used damp (though it could). The texture was soft, a little loose in the pan, and I could feel the sparkles in it, but it was still smooth on the lid and blendable. This shade lasted for eight hours on me with minor fallout.

Harpoon

Harpoon is a muted, medium-dark bluish gray base with greenish-gold sparkle and larger glitter. This one was unusable brush (dry or damp), and it was finicky using it with a dampened fingertip–it sometimes applied beautifully opaque and other times was somewhat patchy. It was extremely difficult to diffuse and blend out on the lid, so I would recommend using a damp fingertip, patting it on, and then using other eyeshadows to blend into it or using this on top of another eyeshadow (like on the center of the lid). It wore well for eight hours but had some fallout over time.

They look nice..but also not a fan of finger applications. Nor having to dampen a color to get full color pay off..maybe dampening it helps with fall out as well. But I would like ones that can be applied with a brush and dry as well.

Lovely shadows. Overall they performed okay. I don’t like applying shadows with my fingers either except for inner corner highlight. This will be an easy pass for me.

We all know by now how much I love the shades in this quad, right? However, I didn’t want to say too much either way concerning performance until after you posted your review of it. My personal experience has been interesting, to say the least. The only shade to give me any issues has been Turbosan. It creased on me by 5 hours. And this was over primer. Next time I will use it damp to see if that improves its longevity, because the shade itself is amazing with my green eyes! Harpoon is likewise a gorgeous shade for making the green pop. I did apply mine with my damp ring finger over UDPP, it lasted better than Turbosan, at roughly 7 hours before I spotted some minor creasing. And yes, Suz applies best if one does as you recommend!

This formula sounds like it’s not for me, but I really appreciate that they were clear about special application needs! I hate it when brands release heavy glitter shades or super dense formulas and say that you can sweep them on with no fallout. I mean, at least DoC is being honest.

I apply all my metallics with fingers and some setting spray, so this doesn’t bother me. I really liked these colors, but Suz was kind of loose in the pan, like when I tried to finger swatch it I got a TON of kick-up. But I really do like the colors selection, especially Turbosan and Harpoon!

Granted I have oily lids, but Noli and Harpoon both creased on me after a few hours of wear. Harpoon also faded a lot over time. I always use primer, and the Smashbox 24 hour shadow primer doesn’t give me issues with any other formula. This palette is beautiful and I really want to enjoy it, but my experiences so far haven’t been ideal.

Harpoon is interesting.. I’ve been so lazy lately, a finger is a great 👍🏻 eyeshadow tool 😆
A swipe of liner, a bit if my blush colour in crease and a damp finger with a shimmer shadow and I’m good to go..

The shades are beautiful – but way too sparkly for me and the fact that you have to use your fingers to apply them is enough to put me off. As well, Harpoon is a pretty unworkable eyeshadow, as lovely as the colour is.
Thank you for the review Christine and the efforts you made to try and make this palette work.

I’m still loving Harpoon but the combination of the special treatments needed and the fact that I can’t just nip out to the store to get this makes it an easy pass for me. Indya’s comment says it all succinctly.

I really love Harpoon, but wish it came in that Skinny Dip formula from Jouer, which was so much easier to use. IDK, this palette is probably too high maintenance for me, and the wear time will even be less on my super oily lids.

I mentioned MUFE’s Grey Gold star lit powder as a dupe when I featured this eyeshadow quad in an anti haul video on my youtube channel!.. I was not 100% certain then… I am happy I was right! yay! 🙂

I had a question if that’s ok! I had a burning sensation on my lids after I applied harpoon. I’m wondering if you had a similar situation at all or if maybe this just means that I’m allergic..? I didn’t have any issues with the other 3. So I’m wondering if this means I’m allergic or I possibly got a bad eyeshadow?

The shade harpoon irritated my eyelids sooo much they burned the two times I tried it what is in this formula?…. I am so disappointed with this shade. the pallet is eeeh, Igor this as a gift and honestly i would not have bought this myself… I bet you already own many shimmer gold and champagne shades this pallet is definitely going in the back of my drawer!
