Dior Rouge Trafalgar (879) Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Rouge Trafalgar (879)
Dior Rouge Trafalgar (879) 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, pink-leaning color story that included all shimmery shades, though the shimmers ranged from more satin to pearl than overtly metallic overall. One shade–the second–was sparkly and sheerer with a more powdery base, and it really pulled down the rating of the palette; it was very in the vein of a sparkly top coat kind of shade, which may or may not be useful in your routine.

Rouge Trafalgar #1
Rouge Trafalgar #1 is a medium pink with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was soft, lightly powdery to the point where it was prone to sheering out a bit when applied to bare skin. I’d recommend using this shade over a primer, which helped the color go on more smoothly and retain its intensity. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have a "creamy and comfortable texture" that is long-wearing and has "intense color" (or "high-pigment"). There are five finishes that can be found within various palettes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter, and glitter, though there aren't specific descriptions by finish, unfortunately.
There were a few shades that seemed more sparkly and were sheerer, more like layering shades, while the other finishes tended to be pigmented. In general, the texture was moderately dense with the matte shades being slightly thinner and a smidgen powdery in the pan compared to the satin, shimmer, and metallic shades.
Aside from those more sparkly shades, the formula was blendable, pigmented, easy to work with, and lasted an average of eight hours on me (without a primer).

Rouge Trafalgar #2
Rouge Trafalgar #2 has a milky pink base with flecks of pink and lighter gold sparkle. It had sheer to semi-sheer coverage with a more powdery base, and there was a bit of fallout when I used it over bare skin. I’d recommend pressing/patting it into place and/or using it over a primer to help mitigate the fallout. It seemed to last for seven hours before fading visibly, but it was hard to see the base color on me.

Rouge Trafalgar #3
Rouge Trafalgar #3 is a medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones paired with a satin finish. It had rich color payoff in a single layer, which adhered well to bare skin and blended out nicely along the edges without losing its intensity. The texture was soft, a smidgen dusty in the pan, but easy enough to pick up and work with. This shade stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Rouge Trafalgar #4
PiPPermanent in Palette.
Rouge Trafalgar #4 is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin and diffused well without losing its opacity. The consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable without being too powdery nor too firmly-pressed into the pan. It wore well for eight hours before fading a bit.

I know the lightest shimmer seems like a dud but I kind of want this…the red tones seem really unique.
I think you’re right. Although each has a fair number of dupes, if you own them, they live in different places. This one is tweaked very nicely, even for most who are overloaded with pinks/reds. It reads cooler than many; I guess by that I mean the reds/pinks look bluer than most, despite being warm. If that makes any sense at all…
Didn’t Dior have a Trafalgar palette a few years ago. I’m not sure how similar or dissimilar it was from this one. As others have pointed out, it seems to be #2 in all the quints that is the weakest link and that sure is the case here. Even though I am not a pink and red type person, I am liking #5 a lot and I’m going to check the dupes to see if I have anything even close or if there’s a single I can purchase to approximate that shade.
Most likely! They are a brand that seems to redo a range but keep a lot of colors overtime every few years!
#2 is always “bad” because it’s supposed to be a highlighter. It’s supposed to be patted over the rest, not used as a normal shadow. It has been this way… for years, but apparently people haven’t noticed this amazing coincidence yet.
I have the old Trafalgar, which was later relaunched as an asian exclusive, and was revamped here. Basically, the original trafalgar has a gold shadow in the bottom left isntead of that vintage pink, the rest is quite similar.
I bought this sight unseen AND before I saw your review, because it just looks so special. Well, a B- isn’t so bad! I bet I’ll still get lots of enjoyment from these shades. 🙂
How I wish that Dior had mentioned that each quint had ONE shade that is designed to be an eyeshadow topper! Because it’s obvious that they did so purposefully. I’m not mad that they did, but I do wish that they had stated it.
That aside, I really love this one a lot. Probably not enough to get it anytime soon, though. Still, super pretty!
Hey Nancy!
They actually don’t ALL have the sparkly topper shade. A lot of them do, but not all. And it’s really not that bad imo. I have most of the palettes now and I really love how they curated these new palettes and updated the formulas!
This is a beautiful palette to look at but in practice, I feel like there isn’t enough definition between the shades. I would have liked one deeper shade. Having said that, it wouldn’t be a stand alone palette for me anyway so I could just add a deeper shade to darken the crease. It does have gorgeous shades. I am still deciding which quint or quints I am getting this release.
Again, it is that second shade that has been problematic throughout all of these new quints from Dior. It is a shame the brand did not realise this during their production process.
Like with the Denim palette, I think the quint would have been better if Dior had swapped shades 2 and perhaps 3 or 4 with different colours to add a greater dimension to the palette.
Shade 5 is a gorgeous plum. Anyway, at least the colour story is consistent and I do wish the overall rating was better for the price.
These colours are so “me” and I love the sparkly topper shade! I’d I could buy one, this would be it!
